Report by Gary Lewsley

Pudsey Congs won the toss and batted on a windy and sometimes chilly day at Fulneck.  A positive start from Si Raistrick who smashed 23 at just under a run a ball on a slightly 2 paced Fulneck wicket, countered at the other end by a typically stodgy Lewsley innings.  The congs never really built the partnerships required to provide the unbeaten league leaders with a testing target. The Congs also had notable contributions from Alistair Goodchild and James Bragg to thank for the final score of 89.  The score could have been better but for some marginal LBW decisions going against them.

Great opening spells from Si Raistrick and Chris Brook gave the Congs some semblence of respectability. This seasons stand out bowler Raistrick removing both openers caught by fielding point winner Josh Purser.  This however brought the leagues best batsmen Gary Walton to the wicket who currently averages 90 this season.  Chris Doey and James Bragg replaced the opening bowlers and bowled well.  Josh Purser was then introduced to the attack and bowled a good short spell.  The highlight of which was his first 3rd team wicket.  The game ended when spin king Jack Murgatroyd was hit for 2 fours.  Despite the game being lost, the young Congs side should be proud of a performance against the League and Cup winners.

At the Britannia Ground

Pool Paper Mills Cup Final

Sunday August 5th, 2007

The Pool Paper Mills Cup Final was won by Rodley who defeated Pudsey Congs by nine wickets in front of a large partisan home crowd at Pudsey Congs’ Britannia Ground. Congs won the toss and elected to bat on a fantastic strip but were soon in trouble. Rodley’s wicket keeper Jon Hodson collected two catches and three stumpings, including the dangerous looking Paul Slater (29) and only a stubborn 35 from Gary Lewsley allowed Congs to post a score of 128. Rodley’s Kiwi all-rounder, Steve Hirst picked up five wickets for just 19 runs and Mark Allinson was as frugal as ever taking 2 for 6 off his eight overs. In reply Rodley wasted little time in chasing down the score and knocked off the runs with 15 overs in hand. Stuart Kirk (31) was the only batsman dismissed as Mark Hobson (43*) and Jon Hodson (50*) won the cup for the second time in three years. Jon Hodson was awarded the Man of the Match award.

Pudsey Congs will face Rodley in the Pool Paper Mills Cup final at the Britannia Ground on Sunday after a comprehensive semi-final victory over Leeds Sikh.

Simon Raistrick (53), ably assisted by Paul Slater and David Burton, who both got into the thirties, enabled Congs to reach 193 for eight in their 40 overs.

Leeds Sikh never got going against some good bowling and fielding and collapsed to 67 all out, Chris Brook and Geoff Galvin taking three wickets each.
