Idle v Pudsey Congs

Wed May 7th, 2008

The weather finally came good and the U17's were able to play the first game of the season last night as they travelled to Idle. The Congs this year are a fairly young side but with the introduction of 4 new players they have the potential to do well and arrived at Idle in good spirits and happy to be finally playing cricket.

The Congs batted first and were hit with the loss of Jack Murgatroyd in the first over as he was run out by an exceptional throw from the boundary as he attempted a second run. Debutant Lahiru Dissanyaka joined Theren Moodley at the wicket and although both showed determination it was clear that run scoring on a difficult wicket with a slow outfield was going to be very difficult. With the scoreboard failing to tick over on a regular basis the batsmen tried to up the tempo but unfortunately Lahiru was cleaned bowled. The new batsmen that followed, Thomas Brook, Raheel Ahmed and Zarak Khan all tried in vain to speed up the scoring but only Theren managed to come to any kind of terms with the wicket. The last few overs finally saw Theren manage to hit the boundaries on a couple of occasions but he was finally dismissed off the last ball of the innings with the score on a lowly 76.

Despite only having a low score to defend the Congs knew they had a good bowling line up and were determined to put pressure on the Idle batsmen. Chris Doey opened the bowling and produced a superb delivery in the first over to send the batsmen's middle stump flying out of the ground. Raheel opened the bowling at the other end and both bowlers produced real pace and kept the pressure on the batsmen. The change bowlers of Zarak Khan and Lahiru Dissanayaka demonstrated exceptional pace and the Idle batsmen were made to struggle for runs as the Congs fielders backed their bowlers with tight fielding. Further bowling changes saw Naeem Aheer, Tyler Gill and Adam Patrick all make a contribution and a tight finish was assured. However, the light was also deteriorating rapidly and the umpires were unwilling for the opening bowlers to return at the end of the innings so spinner Naeem and young Adam were given the responsibility of bowling the final two overs. Both bowled superbly and, aided by fielders who were struggling to see the ball, the Congs kept their nerve and triumphed by 3 runs.

An excellent game of cricket played to a high standard - well done to both sides.
