Bowling Old Lane v Pudsey Congs

At Birch Lane

Saturday May 19th, 2018

Match report by Jacques Alllen

On a red-hot day Congs turned up to Birch Lane looking for their first win of the season against a BOL side that had won their first two games. Adam Patrick was stand in skipper for the day making the step up for the absent Chris Doey for the first time in 2018. Once the coin came down and Patrick had called incorrectly, Congs received the most unsurprising news of the day so far, BOL had elected to bat.

Mark Ferguson and Josh Chapman opened up for Congs beating the bat a countless amount of times, with Ferguson going for 3 boundaries through inside edges somehow missing the stumps. It was in the 9th over where Chapman found the breakthrough removing BOL’s captain with a full toss which found the outside edge flying straight to Patrick at backward point. Patrick then introduced himself and Jacques Allen who started to bowl delightfully in tandem. With the run rate drying up at 42-1 Patrick removed the opener L.B.W followed by a flurry whereby he’d taken 3 wickets in the space of 2 overs. Add to that a smart piece of fielding from Chapman and a good bit of glovework from JLD to run out the number three, BOL were at 51-5. Yasir and Zahid stemmed the flow for the home team while Congs continued to be patient bowling accurately and intelligently. Patrick was replaced by Ferguson after a very good and hard toiled 8 overs in the blistering heat. At 85-5 Allen got his man caught smartly by Richard Scragg at short cover for a well made 15. Allen, Ferguson and Chapman then all claimed one more victim, before Yasir was the last to fall for a nicely directed direct hit from Allen for a well made 30 which had helped BOL scrape towards a score that might just be competitive. An outstanding effort with the ball and in the field from all, a special mention to Chris Hill and Dominic Edwards who brought brilliant energy and commitment in the field.

Bowling Old Lane 125 All out
M.Yasir 30
A.Patrick 8-15-2
J.Chapman 7-22-2
J.Allen 14-33-2
M.Ferguson 10-33-1

JLD and Keegan Moodley were the openers set with the task of trying to get us off to a good start in a run chase that could very easily turn into a tricky one. Moodley looked good until he cut one to gulley who took a very nice catch and BOL had their tails up at 9-1. Allen came to the crease to partner JLD and they decided that the best way to approach this score was through positivity. The next 10 overs were all about Congs with some seriously good shots to all parts, JLD’S highlight a textbook straight drive flashing past the bowler and Allen’s an equally good cover drive up the hill towards the scorebox end of the ground. Allen fell for a run a ball 31 with an incredibly loose shot dragging onto his off stump. Ross Kettlewell came and went falling L.B.W for 0. At 66-3 any chance BOL had was gone when JLD resumed normal service depositing the bowling straight back down the ground for many a boundary. Gopal Makwana got in on the act receiving a fair amount of stick from the BOL players, but he did his talking with the bat (with the occasional verbal bite back). At 106-3 JLD fell caught behind in an innings where everyone would agree he deserved to carry his bat to the finish in what was clearly a match winning knock. Makwana and Ferguson did enough to see us home for a 5-wicket victory in an incredibly positive performance. Many a good side will fall to BOL this year at Birch Lane, but it was a team display where it felt like we were in the driving seat from 13:30!

Pudsey Congs 126-5
J.Linley-Dawe 56
J.Allen 31
G.Makwana 19 Not Out
Pudsey Congs (19) beat Bowling Old Lane (3) by 5 wickets
