Bygone Days

My name is Russell Gibson.  I live in Chelmsford , your cricket Chairman Ralph Middlebrook knows me.  I played for Pudsey Congs in the 1950’s. I recently rediscovered an old Pudsey News. I have it because it reports on the front page the wounding of my dad in the First World War. The date of the paper is 29 June 1917.

On an inside page are cricket reports of the weekend matches.  They include Pudsey Britannia (based then at your present ground) and Pudsey Congs against Wortley Bethel.

A well-known name – H Sutcliffe – opened the batting for Britannia, but only got 5.  What would Jack Hobbs have thought?

I do not know whether you can make out the Congs team, but I think it was:

JW Gaunt, E Hare (Edgar Hare?), G Jowett, E Farrer, W Sowden

T Marsden, H ??…worth, A Illingworth (that will be Big Albert, left arm slow bowler)

W Lewis, L Sutcliffe

Dick Hayter pointed out Harry was always known as “Harry the Tins”. The scoreboard markers were always painted on tin plates when we were young, Harry used to change the score on the scoreboard hense, Harry the Tins. He was also a fine cricketer in his day playing mainly for the original Pudsey Britannia on our field. The photo was taken at Barton C.C. on our first ever cricket tour to Torquay.
