Under 9’s, A season in review by Mark Jackson
My first season as U9’s Manager has not only been a busy one, but also a very eventful one. We took the field for the very first time against Idle in front of a big and expectant home crowd. I openly admit I was more nervous than the players that night, which proved to be a learning experience for everyone. We were soundly beaten and a long way from where I wanted us to be. We had a very young side that night with the average age of 6.5 years old. Many players were making their cricketing debut that night, including Oliver Morris. The side has changed somewhat since then as quite a few older players have come into the team. A number of this U9’s team have gone on to represent the U11’s including Joe Stolarski, Joshua Chapman, Harry Allman, Harry Jackson, Awaise Hussain and Thomas Brine. Also Daniel Locke who has been in and out of the U9’s team made his debut for the club playing for the U11’s before he had played for the U9’s! He was thrown into the lions den with his first ever competitive game of cricket, and did himself proud. Also this season brothers Ben and Jack Twyford came to the club and had never played cricket. Both have contributed so much this season. As some of the older players will move up to the U11’s next season, there will be other players willing and able to step into their shoes. Frankie Gibson being one of them. At 6 years old, he played in the first game of the season and although as stated previously, we were soundly beaten, Frankie did all he could to keep us in the game, hitting the first ball he faced for 4. We have since gone on to win more games than we have lost and every player has contributed something to the season. Lets hope these players can move up the ranks and become successful players of the future for the Congs.
Playoffs, Final
Pudsey Congs v Idle
at Undercliffe
Sunday August 23rd, 2009
Special Match report by M Humpleby
A warm breezy Sunday saw the Under 9’s arrive at Undercliffe full of enthusiasm for the Cup Final. Congs Captain Harry Allman won the toss and elected to field first. The boys had suffered at the hands of the Idle batsmen in previous encounters, so it would be a great test of character to see how they coped this time around. Awais Hussain opened the attack with a maiden to ease the nerves. Josh Chapman followed, taking a wicket in his first over. The Idle batsmen kept the scoreboard ticking but due to some excellent bowling and great effort in the field, wickets fell to keep the total down. Skipper Allman taking 1 wicket, 2 to Adam Slater backed up Chapman’s top effort of 4-25 off 4 overs. The Idle innings closed on 275 for 7 after 20 overs. At the turn around, the boys were confident of chasing down the Idle total.
Openers Awais Hussain and Jack Twyford set about the task with some quick singles with some nice shots from both players. The next pair to the crease were Josh Chapman and Tom Brine. Once again there were some nice shots but after the second pair, 5 wickets had fallen. Coming in for Pudsey at a crucial time were Harry Allman and Ben Twyford. Both Batsmen struggled to score the runs needed to put Congs in a strong position. There were 2 wickets lost in the third pair which put a lot of pressure on the last pair, but it still wasn’t over. The final pair for Pudsey were two inexperienced players, Adam Slater, playing his first game and Joe Allinson playing his second. Adam top scored for Pudsey with some big hitting on his way to 18 and Joe was at the other end getting Adam on strike as much as he could.
With wickets falling at regular intervals through the innings, the Congs finished on 244-12 and finished 31 short of the target. A fantastic effort from the boys competing right to the end made sure this was a final for all to remember.
Playoffs, Semi Final
Pudsey Congs v Barkisland
Monday August 17th, 2009
On a warm evening in front of a very large home crowd, we entertained Barkisland in the semi final, who stood out in their coloured tops. Joshua Chapman was today’s captain, he duly won the toss and decided to field. Awaise Hussain and Joshua then opened the bowling, keeping things tight and right from the start runs were very hard to come by and very soon a wicket went down with Joshua bowling the Barkisland opener. The first pair only managed 3 runs for 1 wicket. The next two bowlers were Tom Brine and Harry Allman. Both kept things tight and Tom, who is now becoming the ‘caught and bowled king’ picked up his 3rd caught and bowled this season, taking a sharp chance which he hung onto well (despite Pudsey putting down3 catches in the field, the fielding effort was excellent with everyone very sharp and determined). Joe Stolarski came into bowl. The ball was hit to Tom Brine, who threw into the stumps and Ben Twyford whipped off the bails and another Barkisland fell. By now Pudsey were very much on top. Jack Twyford bowled another excellent over and is improving all the time. Harry Jackson bowled his 3 overs and conceded a few runs, but also had a few close calls as quite a few deliveries missed the stumps by not very much. There was still time for Joshua Chapman, who was pick of the bowlers today to take another wicket to leave the Barkisland score on 252-4.
The instruction from the manager was very much for sensible batting and that was exactly what we got. So many times this season Pudsey have got off to a good start, thanks to the batting of Awaise Hussain and today was no exception. Ably backed up by Jack Twyford, who concentrates very much on staying there while Awaise gets the runs. This partnership was worth 17 for no loss, the perfect start. Joshua Chapman and Tom Brine were the next to bat. Both were determined to put bat to ball with Joshua scoring 19 runs. This partnership was worth 24 for no wicket. When Harry Allman and Ben Twyford came to the wicket the instruction was to pick up as many runs as they could. Despite Ben getting out once (the only wicket to fall), both batted very well with Harry hitting a boundary. When Harry Jackson and Joe Stolarski came to the wicket, Pudsey were almost 20 runs in front and defence was very much the key. Although Harry hit a very stylish boundary both players played some very good and entertaining defensive shots. I have never heard defensive shots cheered so loudly before and it soon became apparent that Pudsey were about to go all the way. The ‘F’ word (final that is) has not been talked about by the manager or the players prior or during this match and when the realisation hit, I had suddenly realised that no preparation had been made for this event. As Joe Stolarski played his final defensive shot on the last ball, both batsmen raised their bats to the crowd as if the Ashes had just been won! Pudsey finished at 274-1. I would first of all like to thank everyone who came out and supported the boys, your support helped us and meant alot. I would also like to apologise for my lack of preparation for the final but really did not and would not even think about it until this game was over. So on we go to the final…….. versus Idle CC on Sunday 23 Aug. Myself and assistant manager Andre Stolarski find ourselves in sunnier climes while the boys fight it out for this trophy. The two players Harry Jackson and Joe Stolarski who have contributed so much to getting us there will now miss the biggest event of the season. However very capable and able substitutes have been drafted in in the shape of Adam Slater and Molly Murgatroyd. The manager’s reins have been handed over to the very capable and well respected Matthew Humpleby.
Playoffs
Ilkey v Pudsey Congs
Thursday August 6th, 2009
On a warm muggy evening we visited Ilkley Cricket Club. This picturesque setting provided a perfect spectacle for what was to follow. Todays Captain was Jack Twyford, he won the toss and elected to bat. It was Jack that opened the batting with Awaise Hussain. Both players batted well until Awaise slipped going for a single and Jack was unluckily run out. Both however shared a partnership of 15. The next pair to bat were Josh Chapman and Tom Brine. Tom got off the mark with a well struck boundary, but was out twice. Josh opened up and hit some valuable runs and ended up with 15 and the partnership was worth 21. The next 2 batsmen were Harry Allman and Ben Twyford. Both batted very well, Ben was out once and Harry was not out, striking a boundary and keeping his wicket intact. The last pair to bat were Joe Stolarski and Harry Jackson. They both batted well with Harry making 13 and the partnership was worth 20 for no loss.
The score finished on 277-4
It was Awaise Hussain and Josh Chapman who bowled first, restricting the first pair to just 2 runs. Awaise took a wicket and Joe Stolarski then fielded the ball at square leg and threw in and hit the stumps to run out the Ilkley opener. Not a good start for Ilkley. Runs were very hard to come by now. With Harry Allman and Harry Jackson the next 2 bowlers, both taking a wicket, things were made even harder. Harry Jackson then decided he wanted to visit the toilet, so after seeking permission from the opposition manager, Harry made for the dressing room. He was then quickly followed by 5 of his team mates!!!!! Proving that we win as a team and lose as a team, it now it appears we do other things as a team too!!! Order was soon restored and Jack Twyford came on to bowl and bowled his best over so far. Tom Brine and Joe Stolarski bowled next with Joe taking a wicket. Then Harry Jackson, Awaise Hussain and Josh Chapman bowled the last 3 overs between them, each taking a wicket With Josh bowling the penultimate over, after being sick on the boundary edge just 2 minutes before, he somehow managed to run in and bowl a fine over.
The final score finished on 238-8
This fine result means that Pudsey go through to the semi finals. Well done to everyone, this was an excellent performance. Also well done to Ilkley for the excellent spirit in which the game was played. Special thanks to Mathew Humpleby for his umpiring stint. As always, once again thanks to Andre for his constant commitment to the team effort.
Playoffs
Cleckheaton v Pudsey Congs
Friday July 24th, 2009
We visited Cleckheaton in a quickly arranged knockout game. Tom Brine was captain and won the toss and decided to bat. As Pudsey took to the field it appeared that there was a mix up in the rules, as Cleckheaton play in the Heavy Woollen League and rotate the strike after every 3 balls and only bowl from one end. After a meeting between managers and assistant, a compromise was reached and the game continued. Tom Brine and Joshua Chapman opened the batting and struggled to come to terms with the rotation, but got used to it as the match went on and both finished unbeaten with a partnership of 13. The next pair to bat were Awaise Hussain and Jack Twyford. Awaise wanted to put bat to ball and was frustrated having to change every 3 balls. Jack was out twice by the end of the partnership. Harry Allman and Ben Twyford were in next to the wicket with Harry striking the ball well. Ben struggled with the rotation of the strike and was also out twice. Joe Stolarski and Harry Jackson were the last pair in and they both batted well, hitting boundaries and running quick singles. Their partnership was 15 without losing a wicket. The innings closed at 247-4.
Joshua Chapman and Awaise Hussain opened the bowling. Joshua kept it tight at his end and Awaise bowled an uncharacteristic wayward 1st over, however Cleckheaton struggled for runs. Awaise pulled it back in his 3rd over, taking a wicket. Harry Jackson and Harry Allman bowled next, both bowling really well and Harry Jackson took the 1st wicket, finishing with figures of 3-0-4-1. Harry Allman’s spin was hard to get away, missing the stumps twice by a whisker. His figures at the end were 2-1-1-0. Joe Stolarski bowled next and struggled for line and length on his 1st over but pulled it back taking a wicket, caught behind with a good catch from Ben Twyford behind the stumps. Jack Twyford bowled his over and went for a few runs, by this time Cleckheaton were just in front and the game was evenly balanced. Tom Brine came on and took a wicket with Jack Twyford taking a fine catch at square leg to pull the game back. By the time Joshua Chapman came in to bowl the last over, Pudsey needed 2 wickets and he bowled a fine last over, bowling Noble, the Cleckheaton batsman, but was unable to take another wicket, despite a very brave effort. Pudsey fell short by just 6 runs even though Pudsey took more wickets. The final score was 253-5.
After the match the manager spoke to the players and the disappointment was etched all over their faces. Every player who has played for this team can be proud of their efforts this season and everyone has come so far in such a short space of time. A very big thank you to Andre Stolarski for his valuable contribution throughout the season and also to Matthew Humpleby for his help during match days.
**NOTE**
As a result of the game between our Under 9’s and Cleckheaton Under 9’s being played under different rules, the organisers of the Gordon Bowers Trophy decided it would be in the best interest of the competition and both teams for the game to be re-played. It is a matter of regret that Cleckheaton are unable to fulfill the fixture so Pudsey Congs have been awarded the tie and go through to face Ilkley away in the next round.
Pudsey Congs v Thackley
Friday July 10th, 2009
The final game of the group stages of The Gordon Bowers Trophy was played today when Pudsey entertained Thackley C.C. Harry Jackson was today’s captain and lost the toss and Thackley decided to field. Due to a late drop out for Pudsey, Joe Allinson was drafted in and decided to keep wicket instead of Ben Twyford. Awais Hussain and Joe Allinson were the first pair to bat. Awais was out in the first over but struck a boundary and was well backed up by Joe Allinson who kept his wicket intact. Awais was out again but the partnership was still worth 13. The next pair in to bat were Tom Brine and Joshua Chapman. Both batted very well hitting 28 between them, for the loss of Joshua’s wicket. Daniel Locke and Ben Twyford batted next and found runs hard to come by. Daniel lost his wicket once and Ben was not out at the end. Harry Jackson and Joe Stolarski were the last pair to bat and both batted very well, with Harry hitting 3 boundaries in a row. Both kept their wickets intact and finished with a partnership of 26. The final score 278-4.
Awais Hussain and Joshua Chapman were the first to bowl and bowled very well and tight. Awais finishing with figures of 3-2-6-2. The first 4 batsmen struggled for runs with Thomas Brine taking a wicket and Ben Twyford, who bowled 1 over and bowled a maiden, keeping the runs down. Daniel Lock bowled his over and also bowled well. Harry Jackson and Joe Stolarski bowled the final overs, with Joe taking a wicket and Harry taking 2. A big mention must go out to Joe Allinson who came in at the last minute and kept wicket excellently. The final score 237-7.
Well done to everyone involved. Pudsey finishing 2nd in the table and progress through to the knock out stages (dates to be announced later). Thanks once again go to Andre and Matthew for their ongoing help and contribution to the season.
Idle v Pudsey Congs
Monday July 6th, 2009
After 2 cancelled games, we finally managed to visit Idle CC in what we already knew was going to be a tough encounter. Harry Allman was captain for the day, he lost the toss and Idle decided to bat. Owaise Hussain and Harry Jackson were the first pair to bowl and both started off struggling for line and length which seemed to become a habit throughout the team. The next pair to bowl were Harry Allman and Tom Brine. Although Harry conceeded a few boundaries, he was the only bowler to take a wicket. Jack Twyford bowled his one over without conceeding a boundary and Joshua Chapman was the pick of the bowlers with 2 overs for only 6 runs. Joe Stolarski bowled his two overs and the innings finished on 321-1.
Harry Allman and Ben Twyford opened the innings and from the start runs were hard to come by with 3 wickets falling between them. The next pair were Owaise Hussain and Jack Twyford. Owaise hit 2 boundaries but got out twice, and Jack once. The next pair to the wicket were Tom Brine and Joshua Chapman. The instruction by now was just to enjoy themselves and they shared in a partnership of 39 but lost 3 wickets between them with Joshua losing his wicket to a tight run out, but they still entertained the crowd with some well struck boundaries. The last pair in were Joe Stolarski and Harry Jackson. Both batsmen kept the trend going by striking the ball well and were the only 2 batsmen not to get out. Their partnership was worth 18 with Joe striking the ball well and entertaining the crowd with some fine pull shots. The final score 250-9.
With a game on Friday -v- Thackley, we have to put this defeat behind us and continue on. Well done again boys for not giving up and thanks again to all who helped out, mainly Andre who was kept very busy with the scoring.
Thackley v Pudsey Congs
Wednesday June 24th, 2009
On a warm summer evening we visited Thackley C.C. and the teams eyes lit up when they saw the short boundary. Joshua Chapman was today’s captain and without hesitation after winning the toss decided to bat. Owaise Hussain and Jack Twyford were the first pair in to bat and got off to a stuttering start, both losing their wicket early on, but soon recovered with Owaise hitting 5 boundaries. The next pair to bat were Joe Stolarski and Harry Jackson. They battled well hitting 6 boundaries between them before Joe was out once. Enter Harry Allman and Ben Twyford. This partnership was worth 44 without the loss of a wicket, hitting 10 fours between them. Joshua Chapman and Tom Brine came in next and shared a partnership of 22, with Joshua hitting 4 boundaries to finish with a big score of 328-4.
Owaise Hussain and Joshua Chapman opened the bowling with Joshua taking 2 wickets and Owaise 1. Joe Stolarski bowled 3 excellent overs with yet again not a lot of luck but kept the runs down. Harry Jackson took a wicket and the first 4 batsmen really struggled for runs with Pudsey being very sharp in the field. Ben Twyford taking 2 catches behind the stumps and Joshua Chapman taking a sharp catch running in from square leg. Jack Twyford bowled his one over and did well. Thomas Brine and Harry Allman bowled the last overs, just as the last 2 batsmen decided to put bat to ball, but both ended up losing their wickets with J Green, the Thackley captain scoring 26. Harry Allman kept his head while the runs were being scored, taking 2 wickets. The final score 254-6.
Another good win, well done again to all. This was a very competitive game and although there will be harder times to come, for the moment, we are just enjoying the win. A massive thank you to Tracey Chapman for her help with the scoring duties during this run fest.
Undercliffe v Pudsey Congs
Friday June 19th, 2009
The under 9’s season is now rolling on and today we visited Undercliffe CC. Today there was an air of excitement as the players were growing in confidence. Owaise Hussain was today’s captain and he continued the trend by winning the toss and decided to bat first. He opened the innings with Jack Twyford and got the team off to a good start. Although Owaise was out once, he still shared in a partnership of 27. Joshua Chapman and Thomas Brine came in next and batted excellently, sharing in a partnership of 18 and both keeping their wickets intact. Harry Allman and Ben Twyford were the next pair in and despite Ben losing his wicket, both batsman kept the scoreboard ticking over and both batted well. Despite a good flow of runs Undercliffe’s fielding was quite sharp, stopping quite a few boundaries. The next pair in were Joe Stolarski and Harry Jackson. Both batted well with Joe hitting a boundary and running some sharp singles. Harry was out once but despite this, they both shared a partnership of 15. The innings closed on 276-3.
Owaise Hussain and Harry Jackson opened the bowling and both took a wicket each. The next pair to bowl were Jack Twyford and Thomas Brine. Both bowled well and each took a wicket. Jack’s was bowled and Thomas’ was well caught by Ben Twyford behind the stumps. Joe Stolarski and Joshua Chapman bowled next with Joshua taking a wicket after Harry Allman took an excellent catch and mid-on and Joe was at last rewarded for some excellent bowling with 2 wickets, both bowled. This game had almost everything and it wasn’t long before Harry Allman and Ben Twyford combined in a sharp run out. Harry Jackson took 2 wickets in his last over to leave the final score 198-11.
Yet again this was a really competitive game in which everyone contributed and every bowler took a wicket. Well done again boys and thanks to everyone who helped out on the night.
Pudsey Congs v Undercliffe
Friday June 12th, 2009
The somewhat stuttering U9s season got back on track tonight (after last weeks cancelled game) and tonight’s visitors were Undercliffe CC. Joe Stolarski was skipper for the match and won the toss and decided to bat. The manager had asked for an improvement in performance and straight away the first pair in, Owaise Hussain and Jack Twyford, made their intentions very clear with Jack starting off his innings with 4 runs. Owaise then set about the Undercliffe bowling, hitting 6 boundaries and scoring 27 and sharing in an unbeaten partnership of 31. The next pair in were Harry Allman and Ben Twyford, again both of these players batted excellently sharing a partnership of 23 with Twyford making 18. Things were going along pretty well when Joshua Chapman and Tom Brine (making his debut for the club) came to the wicket. Although both these batsmen were each out once, they both scored useful runs. The last pair to the wicket were Harry Jackson and Joe Stolarski, who both batted very sensibly before Harry was out once. The score finishing on 285-3.
Harry Jackson and Owaise Hussain opened the bowling and pinned the openers back with Owaise starting with a maiden and Harry Jackson taking 2 wickets in 2 balls. Tom Brine and Jack Twyford were the next to bowl and Tom took 2 wickets in 2 balls, both caught and bowled finishing with figures 2-0-5-2. Jack bowled very well at the other end. Joe Stolarski again bowled a very tidy spell. By this time Undercliffe were struggling for runs, Mohamed Iqbal having a flourish with 2 well struck boundaries. Then Harry Allman came on to bowl and took a wicket in his first over. Joshua Chapman kept the scoring down with his 2 overs and Harry Jackson took a wicket in the last over finishing with remarkable figures of 3-0-6-3. Undercliffe finished on 228-6.
This was a good team effort all round, well done boys and well done to Undercliffe who contributed to a very entertaining game. The usual thanks go out to everyone for their help and support and lets hope we can keep this momentum going.
Pudsey Congs v Idle
Friday May 22nd, 2009
The eagerly awaited under 9’s season finally got underway tonight in front of a big crowd with Pudsey entertaining Idle CC. Right from the start there were a few nerves around (mostly from the manager)! Idle won the toss and put Pudsey into bat with Ben Twyford and Joe Stolarski the first pair in. Both battled well against some quick bowling, with Twyford hitting a very stylish 4 runs but both batsmen were out twice. The next pair in were Jack Twyford and Frankie Gibson who got off the mark with a well struck 4 runs and was backed up very well by Twyford who batted well but was also out twice.
By now the innings needed some stability, this was provided by the next pair in Harry Jackson and Daniel Locke who played some solid defensive shots and kept their wickets intact. The last pairing were Oliver Morris and Josh Chapman who again provided some solid defence and kept his wicket intact. Oliver hit an excellent 4 runs but was out twice. Congs finishing their innings on 211-8.
In reply, Harry Jackson took a wicket with the first ball of the Idle innings with Joshua Chapman bowling very tidily at the other end, restricting the first 2 batsmen to just 6 runs. The next pair came in and put bat to ball but had to face some superb bowling from Joe Stolarski, who finished with figures of 3-0-10-0 backed up by Jack Twyford who also bowled well. A big mention has to go to Ben Twyford who kept wicket for the first time in his life and did really well. The next pair in were pinned back by the bowling of Frankie Gibson, backed up by Daniel Locke, who took a wicket and only the 2nd of the innings. Oliver Morris bowled well for his 1 over and the innings finished 288-2 and a comfortable win for Idle.
Well done to everyone despite a very one-sided game. Pudsey never gave up and worked hard all the way through. Thanks have to go to Andre and Matthew for their valuable help and support throughout and big thanks to Adam Patrick for his help on the night.
Under 11’s
Fixture List and Match Reports 2009
Manager: Mark Allman, assisted by Robin Kettlewell
A Very Successful Season For Our Unders 11’s
BY DOMINIC ALLEN
The season has certainly contained no little drama for this young and impressive side. It commenced amid a player crisis of sorts and the team that was put out in the first game bears hardly any resemblance to that which finished the league campaign. Starting the season with back-to-back defeats was not what coach Mark Allman was looking for but they were missing several ‘star players’, however our under 9’s players Harry Jackson, Harry Allman and Daniel Lock coped admirably against the older opposition. Skipper Jack Allman had finally acquired what is now regarded as his best side against Saltaire in late May and the team racked up a club record 308 in a big win with Zaheed Mahmood, Tom Colley and Daany Ahmed making impressive debuts along the way. Vice captain Jacques Allen, Mustafa Rafique, Danish Hussain, Jack Allman, Ross Kettlewell and Liam Leonard have all performed with credit this year and the addition of, Zaheed Mahmood, Daany Ahmed and Tom Colley has produced a squad as good as any in the league.
The JCT 600 Cup competition is an eleven a side tournament so some of our under 9’s have been drafted in and the like of Awaise Hussain, Joshua Chapmen, Joe Stolarski have joined Harry Jackson and Daniel as regular cup players. A comfortable victory over East Bierley in Round 1 was followed by a quarter final match at Lightcliffe, which should have carried a Government Health Warning. Liam hit a 4 from the final ball of the game to earn us a tie and a replay here at the Britannia Ground. Lightcliffe had missed their chance and were well beaten in the replay. Danish and Zaheed both scored 22 not out in a fine all round team performance to defeat Manningham Mills in the semi final on a wet night late last month. Defeat in the final against Spen Victoria was a disappointment but should not take away from a fine season.
Congratulations to all the boys.

Pudsey Congs v Spen Victoria
JCT 600 Cup, Final
Sunday August 9th, 2009
Special report by Dominic Allen
So the day of reckoning finally arrived and all of the waiting and anticipation was over for 12 nervous young Pudsey Congs cricketers. At last we had weather to match a fantastic occasion and by the start of play, a scorching sun had just about burnt away the last of the morning dew. We should probably start with a role call of the Cup Final team which was as follows: Danish Hussain, Tom Colley, Mustafa Rafique, Zaheed Mahmood, Jacques Allen, Jack Allman, Ross Kettlewell, Daany Ahmed, Awaise Hussain, Harry Jackson, Liam Leonard and 12th man Josh Chapman. All of the players looked a picture in their shirts and trousers but a very special mention must go to Zaheed Mahmood who looked like he was running for president, he was so immaculately dressed.
Spen Victoria won the toss and elected to bat and this meant Congs had fielded first in every single round of the cup. Pudsey’s preparations were immediately dealt a blow when it became clear opening bowler Mustafa Rafique had attended the ground without his kit. This problem was exacerbated when news came through that his father’s car had broken down, whilst making its second trip to the ground that morning with the aforementioned kit. Had dear old Jeremy Beadle still been with us, coach Mark Allman would surely have been scanning the ground for a bearded gentleman holding a microphone. As it was, Josh Chapman took the field with the team whilst all lockers and drawers were searched for some gear in a desperate attempt to get the most potent bowling force onto the field. And the drama was not contained to off field activities. Daany Ahmed’s first delivery of the match to Senior was helped around the corner but in the air and straight to the safe hands of Zaheed Mahmood at backward square leg. Spen were 0-1 and pandemonium broke out in the Congs ranks who had got off to the best possible start. It was to Spen’s great credit that such a potentially destabilising start did not really affect them one jot. Ferguson and North both scored heavily and took advantage of some uncharacteristically lethargic fielding from Pudsey, Ferguson racing to his 30 retired, North scoring a wonderful 22. The leg spin that had served Pudsey so well in earlier rounds did not seem to work this time around, going at five per over and far too many balls went straight through hands and legs for four when a mere single had looked on the cards. Ross Kettlewell did gain a useful breakthrough that slowed the scoring rate when he had North caught at square leg by Rafique but Pudsey will have felt they allowed the opposition 25 or 30 too many, though the final total was still infinitely gettable.
Spen Victoria 103-3 (R.Ferguson 30 ret; T.North 22; R.Kettlewell 1-6; D.Ahmed 1-9)
After just eight balls of the reply, Danish Hussain managed to pull an innocuous looking delivery straight up in the air to get the Congs chase off to a poor start. It was going to be interesting to see how they would cope without a contribution from the baby-faced assassin and for at least the next seven overs the answer was, admirably. However, the turning point in the game arrived when Rafique departed as he tried to haul a straight delivery through mid-wicket; a shot probably borne of desperation to avoid facing out an excellent maiden over from Grant. The only part of the scoreboard that did not shudder to a grinding halt was the wickets section as Pudsey collapsed from a comfortable 31-1 to a disastrous 41-5. A combination of poor shots and bad luck played their part but the game was as good as over. Jack Allman made an impressive 14 including two exquisite boundaries and Daany Ahmed initiated a couple of well timed assists around the corner to fine leg but the collapse had signalled that the end was nigh. Bizarrely, Congs seemed to stop trying to score runs toward the latter end of the innings and they finished on a slightly misleading 71-8.
One interesting point to come out of the game was that the old adage ‘catches win matches’ was strangely absent. Spen dropped somewhere in the region of six during the Pudsey innings but still managed to hold on comfortably. In fact, other than the disastrous first ball, Spen Victoria bossed this game from start to finish, played the better cricket at the more pressurised moments and having played three cup games in a week are more than worthy winners of this inaugural trophy. Our congratulations go out to them and Mark Allman made the wonderful gesture of donating two bottles of champagne to their after-match celebration party.
For our team, they have nothing to be ashamed of and can look back at a fantastic run in this competition. The club is immensely proud of their efforts and they should be very proud of themselves. The Britannia Ground looked a picture for this final and there was no doubting the sense of occasion; one that the players had brought about through their efforts. The defeat will be character building for the young men and in future years they will call on their experience here to help them win other finals.
Pudsey Congs 71-8 (M.Rafique 14; J.Allman 14; D.Grant 2-6; O.Brooke 1-4)
Spen Victoria win by 32 runs
Saltaire v Pudsey Congs
Sunday August 2nd, 2009
Report by Dom Allen
Sadly, due to the unremitting deluge of rain that fell on Saturday morning and then again in the afternoon, coach Mark Allman received a call at teatime to confirm that the game with Saltaire would be abandoned. As Saltaire’s ground is located right next to the River Aire, their pitch is particularly susceptible to wet weather. So, a disappointing ending to the league campaign but the match would have turned out to be a dead rubber in any case due to the previous weekend’s result at Tofts Road. The youngsters can now firmly concentrate on the JCT 600 Cup Final this coming Sunday.
Pudsey Congs v Manningham Mills
JCT 600 Cup, Semi-Final
Tuesday July 28th, 2009
Special report by Dominic Allen
The young Congs took on Manningham Mills for the third time this season after narrowly completing a double over them just a week ago. This match up was guaranteed to be even more sternly contested and probably represented the most important match in which the majority of players had taken part thus far (Yorkshire representatives excluded). How disappointing then that the weather could not have been less befitting of such an occasion; cold, gloomy and extremely wet, the large crowd, coaches and teams can take great credit for seeing the game through to a conclusion.
At the toss Jack Allman made the somewhat surprising decision to field first although as events transpired it proved to be a huge advantage later in the game. Congs regular opening bowlers Mustafa Rafique and Daany Ahmed bowled with their usual control and after four overs, Mills had reached 12 without loss. The breakthrough came in the fifth over when Zaheed Mahmood was brought into the attack and the left handed Wajaht Iqbal tried to pull him over the mid-wicket boundary. The ball only made it half way towards the intended target and straight into the welcoming hands of Danish Hussain. This brought the dangerous Kyme Khan to the crease and the Pudsey players needed no reminding of his destructive ability after he so nearly got his team over the line in their previous encounter. Although he was to be top scorer this evening with 18, he played a much more controlled innings, nudging ones and twos, rather than attempting any massive blows. Next man to go was Wahab Mirza after he had put on 23 with Khan for the second wicket. Danish Hussain managed to get a beautifully flighted delivery under his defences and he was gone for 10. Hussain finished with the remarkable figures of 1-3 from his three overs and he was replaced after his spell by Jacques Allen who managed to bowl Khan with a further looping delivery. He too finished with tidy figures of 1-7. All of the Pudsey bowling had been magnificent bearing in mind that half way through the innings, constant rain began to fall that never really looked like stopping. Only three boundaries were conceded throughout the innings and two of these were the result of sloppy mis-fielding rather than poor bowling. Despite this, the fielding had also been of a high calibre with Harry Jackson probably shading the fielding point with a superb stop that left him counting his fingers, the ball was hit so hard.
Manningham Mills 73-3 (K.Khan 18; D.Hussain 1-3; J.Allen 1-7; Z.Mahmood 1-9)
Due to Tom Colley pulling up lame in the field, Pudsey decided not to risk his injured leg and Jacques Allen was promoted to open the batting with Danish Hussain. It is worth bearing in mind that the rain was not getting any lighter and the pitch was starting to resemble a quagmire. The pair batted with great intelligence though, utilising their fortune with the conditions to the full. Knowing the ball would be difficult to pick up and that fielders were finding it difficult to keep their feet, they tried to run a single to anything not going straight to a man. Hussain put the crowd through the torture that is customary for his innings; once pulling the ball inches over the outstretched hands of a Mills fielder, another time miscuing a shot to mid-wicket that was only dropped as the fielder hit the ground. But despite this, his talent shone through once again and he plays strokes hardly ever seen by youngsters both in terms of the power and skill level required. His defence also looks to be as solid as a rock. Having put on 27 for the first wicket, Khan gained his revenge on Allen when he failed to spot an excellent quicker ball that was through him before he had played the shot. Zaheed Mahmood was promoted to number three and having been warned about the quicker ball was quite comically set in defence, waiting for it each time Khan tried thereafter. Having seen off the undoubted best Mills bowler, the pair started to play with a little more freedom and chipped away at the target. From over seven onwards the pair scored at least eight per over and it was simply a matter of how long it would take. Mahmood hit the winning runs; consecutive boundaries over mid-wicket off his namesake in the Mills side. Both batsmen finished on the identical score of 22 not out and both had looked highly impressive.
It has to be acknowledged that Manningham Mills suffered by far the worst conditions in the game. Having to field and bowl for the duration with a wet ball on a pitch that made it very difficult to keep your feet, they will rightly feel very aggrieved that the cricketing gods chose to treat them in this way. This was a shame for Pudsey also because on balance they would have more than fancied their chances in perfect circumstances. Still a win is a win and the atmosphere in the clubhouse after the game was something to behold, as times such as these are to be treasured. The youngsters can feel very proud of their achievements in reaching the August 9th Final and will doubtless be even more confident in the knowledge that the game is to be played on their own ground.

Match Report by Dom Allen
After a glorious Saturday the rain arrived right on cue for this championship-deciding game which also represented the re-match of the two local rivals. It appeared the day might have been a huge anti-climax when the persistent rain refused to budge but after a discussion between both coaches it was agreed that the game would commence irrespective. Having spent half the week believing they would be fielding their strongest team, the final eight in fact did not bear a resemblance as Congs were without Zaheed Mahmood (Yorkshire), Danish Hussain (holiday) and after a very late withdrawal, Daany Ahmed (flu).
Jack Allman won the toss, electing to put St Lawrence into bat and the opening pair of ‘Pockets’ Rhodes and Fleming set about the Congs attack. The ball was as slippery as a bar of soap during the opening exchanges and the conditions did not favour the all leg spin Congs attack but Tom Colley and Jacques Allen stuck to their task, conceding 19 runs to the openers. Mustafa Rafique came into the attack in an attempt to exploit St Lawrence’s frailties against quicker bowling. In reality Ross Kettlewell (who was probably the most impressive Congs bowler all day) outshined him. Despite a well-taken run out, the St Lawrence score was starting to mount up and with two partnerships to come, a large total seemed all but a certainty. This was confirmed when J.Pearce, C.Tiffany and Archy Scott all climbed into the weaker bowlers, showing little mercy. After a difficult day in the field, the unfortunate Congs bowlers did not have one wicket to show for their troubles, as both men out fell to run outs.
Pudsey St Lawrence 282-2 (B.Rhodes 16no)
With the most destructive batsmen split across the four partnerships, Congs’ batsmen marched to the middle to attempt their thorny chase of 283. The coaches had given them free licence to have a go at anything wayward. Therefore, it would have been difficult to imagine how the opening partnership could have gone any worse. In the second over a comfortable single was inexplicably turned down and when Kettlewell gloved the very next ball to the keeper, you could sense there and then that the match was over as a contest. It was remarked upon that cricket becomes a different and much harder game when you have to hit the ball and when Allen could only get one ball away for four in his innings, the writing was firmly on the wall. The troubles were compounded when Liam Leonard took a nasty blow on the foot and had to retire hurt. Jack and Harry Allman and Harry Jackson all tried manfully but the St Lawrence bowling was simply too good. As the panic set in, so the running between the wickets became more and more comical. Three wickets fell during the final partnership and every one down to a complete breakdown of communication in the middle.
So the local bragging rights are once again firmly in the hands of our friends at Tofts Road. Their performance in testing conditions was exemplary and they were more than worthy winners in this match. Had Congs best possible eight been available for this game, they would still have had to play out of their skins to beat such an impressive St Lawrence unit. But another day, another dollar and on Tuesday night in the Cup, an infinitely stronger Pudsey team, hungry to avenge this defeat, will take on Manningham Mills in what now represents their only chance of silverware this year.

Pudsey Congs v Lightcliffe
JCT 600 Cup, 3rd Round Replay
Wednesday July 22nd, 2009
Special report by Dominic Allen
And to think this impressive young side were within one ball of going out of the JCT 600 Cup………
The eagerly awaited replay of the now infamous Quarter Final at Lightcliffe got underway at the Britannia Ground on a cloudy Wednesday evening. Pudsey were without Jacques Allen from the previous encounter but they did welcome back Danish and Awaisse Hussain, plus hugely missed keeper Jack Allman so all in all, the side was stronger. Lightcliffe again won the toss and opted to make first use of a slightly damp but extremely flat wicket. Mark Allman made an inspirational speech in the dressing room, asking the players to have belief in themselves and to ensure they perform to the best of their ability. Robin Kettlewell also asked for an improvement in the field, pointing out this could save dozens of runs. With all of the wise words ringing in their ears, the young guns took the field and Mustafa Rafique opened the bowling. His second delivery was beautifully timed through the covers for four by Jordan Pickles and the crowd were maybe thinking along the lines of ‘here we go again’. But he struck with the fifth ball of the same over, bowling James Hodgson with a ball that just clipped the off stump. Both opening bowlers (Daany Ahmed was at the other end) bowled with great control and after four overs, Lightcliffe were 17-1. The tone for the evening was set in Tom Colley’s first over when he first bowled Robbie Broadbent with a superb quicker delivery and then caught and bowled Freddie Stoker the very next ball. He looked a little disappointed to see his confident appeal for LBW turned down on the hat-trick delivery but 2 for 1 from his first over was still a great return. Zaheed Mahmood was introduced at the other end to provide an all leg spin attack. He bamboozled the dangerous Pickles for four balls before bowling him with a beautifully flighted, spinning delivery fifth ball. Jack Booth pulled the first ball of Colley’s next over for four and whilst the crowd were busy applauding him, a couple of the players realised the poor lad had trodden on his stumps in the process and he became Colley’s third victim, hit wicket. Mahmood then took control, bowling a double wicket maiden followed by a further wicket maiden. He was to finish with the stunning figures of 4 for 0 but even more impressively, had bowled a series of unplayable deliveries. Danish Hussain entered the attack and bowled Bradband with his first ball. An hilarious altercation then took place between Mahmood and Hussain with Mahmood pleading that Hussain should not take the final wicket, in order that he be afforded the opportunity to take a ‘five-fer’. Hussain gave him short shrift and promptly bowled last man Mitchell Sutcliffe first ball. Lightcliffe were all out for 29 and this had been a mesmerising bowling display by Congs. Through much improved keeping and fielding, they had also blocked off Lightcliffe’s main scoring area behind the stumps from the first match.
Sadly, as the batsmen were leaving the field, a couple of the Pudsey fielders indulged in some unpleasant gloating at the Lightcliffe team. Although borne of excitement at their achievement, they were immediately chastised on the field and asked to apologise. A further dressing down was issued by coach Allman in the changing rooms after the game and the club would like to apologise to Lightcliffe through this medium for any offence taken. It should be noted by all that the club, in no way, tolerates such behaviour.
Lightcliffe 29 all out (Z.Mahmood 4-0; T.Colley 3-10; D.Hussain 2-0)
After an interminable and unexplained delay, the Pudsey Congs reply got underway with Danish Hussain and Tom Colley opening the batting. Both looked solid in defence but it did not take long for Hussain to open his shoulders. He began by pulling a ball to the square leg boundary and during the next few overs combined hard drives down the ground with further fierce pulls. His innings was certainly not chanceless, no less than three times skying the ball into gaps between fielders but as so often happens on these occasions, fortune favours the brave, especially chasing modest totals. The game was all over after 5.4 overs, Hussain finishing on 29 not out and Colley 3 not out.
Before the game, if you had contemplated the perfect performance, it would have looked something like the display the young Congs produced here. Clinical in the extreme, it is worth pausing for a moment to consider that, but for Liam Leonard’s famous boundary, the undoubted weaker team would have progressed to the semi finals, even acknowledging star batsman George Aireton was unavailable for this game. Nevertheless, the Under 11s will take a huge amount of confidence into their semi final with Manningham Mills next Tuesday (also at the Brit) after completing this victory at the second time of asking.

Manningham Mills v Pudsey Congs
Sunday July 19th, 2009
Match Report by Dom Allen
On a thoroughly miserable morning, the high-flying youngsters travelled to the far side of Bradford for their re-match with Manningham Mills. The previous encounter had produced a run-fest on a scorching day and this game could not have been played in more contrasting conditions. Jack Allman lost the toss and Pudsey were asked to make first use of the bouncy track with Jacques Allen promoted to open the batting with Mustafa Rafique. In truth, this combination did not really work and served to starve Rafique of the majority of the strike, wasting his big hitting. His score of 5 runs demonstrated just how few balls he actually faced, Allen finishing on 13 but having once again fallen for the five card trick of trying to smash a ‘pea-roller’. Tom Colley was impressive yet again, scoring 10 but also protecting the lesser-experienced hero from Monday evening Liam Leonard. Colley certainly demonstrates a wonderfully straight bat. Confusion between Ross Kettlewell and captain Allman led to a needless run out and all of the players will need to consider the fact that it is not how well you hit the shot but WHERE YOU PLACE IT that determines whether to call for a run or not. Allman more than made amends however by unleashing his favourite pull stroke and the pair finished in credit. Zaheed Mahmood and Danni Ahmed appeared last for Congs and after a quiet start, Mahmood exploded into life, smashing 5 fours in his 23. This was a wonderful knock that the team were to become hugely indebted to.
Pudsey Congs 269-3 (Z.Mahmood 23no; J.Allman 11no)
Superb opening spells from both Rafique and Ahmed kept the Mills pair of Dean and Mahboob down to 210 and after Allen had taken two wickets with his new leg spin, Manningham had slipped into arrears at 197 after 8 overs. It looked like a comfortable victory might be on the cards but the opposition had brilliantly hidden away their weaker batsmen in the second pairing to allow for the forthcoming onslaught. Wajid Iqbal and Wahab Mirza were remorseless on the Congs weaker bowlers and also managed to cart county player Mahmood to all parts. They added almost 40 runs for their pairing and got Mills right back in the match. So the scene was set for K.Khan to launch his pyrotechnics and this he duly did. He is clearly going to be some player and he blasted the ball on six occasions to the boundary, two of these clearing the rope on the full by a considerable distance. The crucial ball of the whole match was bowled by Tom Colley. Khan jumped right across to the off side and tried to smash it to the mid wicket boundary but was bowled around his legs. This gave Congs some much needed breathing space. Thus 16 were needed from the last over bowled by Ahmed. His customary unerring accuracy fell to pieces under the unrelenting pressure of Khan’s on side strokeplay and he was picked up three times over square leg. After allowing a second run that put Khan back on strike, Pudsey once again faced the torture of a match coming down to the final delivery. Fortunately for Congs, Ahmed bowled down the off side and Khan could only drive the ball to mid off where cool Tom Colley calmly fielded the ball and under armed it in to prevent any further addition to the score. Another wonderful game of cricket, won in the opinion of the coaching staff on the basis of the better team spirit enjoyed by Congs.

Lightcliffe v Pudsey Congs
JCT 600 Cup, 3rd Round
Monday July 13th, 2009
Special report by Dominic Allen
If you are of a nervous disposition then look away now. As well as the ‘tight as a drum’ nature of this game, the tension was exacerbated for the majority of onlookers because they will have been routing for one or more of the players on a personal level. When the game finished at around 9.30pm , the crowd had been treated to a wonderful spectacle, plenty of drama and no little skill. It may well be something of a cliché but a government health warning should have accompanied this match.
Captain Jacques Allen’s plans to put Lightcliffe under pressure by posting a large total were scuppered when he called incorrectly at the toss. Pudsey therefore took the field with a number of the Under 9s in tow once again and our thanks and gratitude for their help must be noted. Mustafa Rafique’s first delivery went for four byes but he made instant amends, bowling opening batsman J.Booth without scoring off his legs next ball. Lightcliffe appeared to have held back their best batsman, George Aireton, for the number three slot and he played some exquisite strokes on his way to 30 retired. In fact, the scoring rate during the first 10 overs was bordering on an alarming 8 or 9 an over. No matter what the bowlers tried, the ball seemed to follow the younger players at high speed as Aireton and J.Pickles made hay. Tom Colley stemmed the flow to a degree with his spell but the rate was reduced further when the leg spin of Allen and Zaheed Mahmood produced wickets to bring quieter batsmen to the crease. Dani Ahmed’s control at the end of the innings was highly impressive and a required rate of just over five per over was not ideal but much lower than feared half an hour earlier.
Lightcliffe 105-4 (Z.Mahmood 2-10; M Rafique 1-11; J. Allen 1-15; D.Ahmed 0-10)
Robin Kettlewell gave the youngsters a stern lecture at half time, asking them to get their heads around the fact that if they were out, that was it for the night; there were no second chances at this format. It would therefore have been foolish to offer a penny for the coach’s thoughts when, after just four balls of the innings, an appalling call for a run that was never there, led to the run out of Tom Colley and the score was 0-1. This was a disaster for Congs and necessitated a period of consolidation from Rafique and number three Allen. This initially went a little too far and with the score still only in the teens after six overs, Rafique was encouraged to express himself a little more. He hit 3 fours in one over and several more subsequently until he was very quickly asked to retire on 30. At the other end Allen was trying to balance solidity with the occasional boundary. Zaheed Mahmood came to the crease and was immediately dropped by the keeper first ball. This was a massive let off for Congs and Mahmood was not going to waste the opportunity he had been gifted. Combining deft touches for singles with fierce strokeplay, he brought up his 30 in double quick time and ensured Congs were right up with the asking rate. At the other end, Allen had also upped the tempo and after at first finding the left arm bowling difficult, he smashed a ball straight over mid off to bring up his total of 31. It was a concern that both batsmen brought up their 30s almost simultaneously and with just two overs remaining Congs had two new batsmen at the crease, still needing seven runs. This equation got worse when after the loss of Ross Kettlewell and Dani Ahmed, five runs were required from just five balls.
Liam Leonard was the man tasked with trying to achieve the target and when after four balls the scoreboard had not moved, many in the ground had either given up (on the Congs side) or commenced indulging in gloating. Foolish. The last ball was bowled outside off stump and Leonard saved the greatest shot of his life so far, for the most important moment; a square cut, past a despairing Lightcliffe fielder for four invaluable runs and the match was tied. The scenes of jubilation and despair that followed were an experience that will live long in the memory. The Congs players all charged the field and mobbed Leonard to a man, even making an audacious but ultimately flawed attempt to chair him from the middle. It was real Boy’s Own stuff and for a while amid all the confusion, Congs were convinced they had proceeded to the next round on the basis of losing fewer wickets. This proved optimistic however and whilst it is still to be confirmed, the most likely outcome is that the two sides will need to replay at the Britannia Ground. But having been as good as out of the Cup, Congs went home extremely happy even though many of the parents were in need of a stiff drink. A slightly more comfortable victory next time out would be most welcome.

Match Tied
Pudsey Congs v Tong Park
Sunday July 12th, 2009
Match Report by Dom Allen
Incessant overnight rain had led to the near cancellation of this fixture but when the day dawned bright and breezy, the ground was declared fit and play got underway on time. Tong Park batted first and one sensed that Congs were not quite on the money. Whether this was down to the forthcoming fixture in the Cup or the perceived weaker nature of the Tong Park outfit it was not clear but the fielding was a little sloppy. In fact, Tong Park batted extremely well, losing only four wickets on their way to a respectable 245. Mustafa Rafique and Zaheed Mahmood were the pick of the bowlers with 1-9 and 1-6 respectively. Jacques Allen chipped in with 1-14 and an excellent run out effected by Ross Kettlewell accounted for the other wicket.
Tong Park 245-4 (Z.Mahmood 1-6; M Rafique 1-9; J.Allen 1-14)
The target could have proved difficult but fortunately for Congs, their batsmen were in the zone by this stage and the Tong Park fielding was (they will freely admit) poor. Rafique (20 not out) and Tom Colley got the home team off to a perfect start and almost half the deficit was eroded after their four overs. Jacques Allen (11 not out) was his usual steady self with Liam Leonard. However he did cut loose with a six that sadly landed full onto the head of Ross Kettlewell, sat on the steps of the changing rooms. Everyone’s hearts were in their mouths but this quickly turned to relief as it became clear that no serious injury had been sustained and the poor lad was suffering from shock. It seems the peak of his cap had proved his saviour but as his father later pointed out, this was a poignant warning for youngsters to keep their eye on the ball AT ALL TIMES . The injury resulted in a change of batting order and Mahmood blasted his way to 22 not out, Ahmed 12. Both players effected some wonderful strokes and took the game away from Tong Park at a rate of knots.
Therefore when Kettlewell and the very impressive Harry Jackson came to the crease, the game was up for Tong Park . The fact that Kettlewell came out to bat at all says wonders for his courage bearing in mind that 15 minutes earlier he’d taken such a nasty blow. They saw things through to a conclusion without losing any further wickets and Congs finished on a 300 plus score for the third time this season, thanks in part to an horrific last over that contained seven no balls or wides.
Pudsey Congs 305-1 (Z.Mahmood 22no; M.Rafique 20no ; D.Ahmed 12; J.Allen 11no)
Pudsey Congs win by 60 runs
Keighley v Pudsey Congs
Sunday July 5th, 2009
Match Report by Dom Allen
On a very humid morning, the young Congs travelled into the Yorkshire Dales to visit table-topping Keighley. Due to several players appearing later that day in representative matches it was agreed that Keighley should bat first. Tight bowling (Dani Ahmed, Mustafa Rafique and Jacques Allen) and two impressive catches (both from bucket hands Tom Colley) saw the opening pair of Bellerby and Rashid leave the field with a negative score. Tom Colley and Zaheed Mahmood then proceeded to treat the crowd to a master class of leg spin bowling. Whilst neither took a wicket, in fairness, the majority of the deliveries were just too good to lay a bat upon. The final Keighley total of 227 possibly represented a disappointment on their part but they had set out their stall to avoid losing wickets and so only losing two to such quality bowling was an achievement in itself.
Keighley 227-2 (D.Ahmed 1-9 ; J.Allen 1-10 ; T.Colley 2 cts)
Pudsey Congs chase got off to a slightly shaky start with the loss of Rafique twice. He was bowled ‘hoiking’ across the line and his dad made it clear that he was less than impressed with the shot selection of his talented son. He was also run out backing up after the bowler deflected a very firm drive from Colley back onto the stumps. This is the most unfortunate event the game can throw at a player but at least it only results in the loss of eight runs at this level. Tom Colley had in fact played a number of highly impressive and technical strokes for his 15 runs. The lad has a very bright future in the game. Jacques Allen and Liam Leonard edged Congs closer to the Keighley total and Jack Allman and Ross Kettlewell pushed them into credit with some well timed strokes. The final pair of Dani Ahmed and Zaheed Mahmood were a revelation, adding 22 runs without further loss. Encouragingly, the majority of these were singles which demonstrated good running between the wickets. This was a highly convincing batting display and coach Mark Allman told the players after the match that he felt it was the best he had seen his young chargers bat all season.
Pudsey Congs 257-3 (T.Colley 15no ; Z.Mahmood 16no)
Pudsey Congs win by 30 runs
Pudsey Congs v Pudsey St Lawrence
Sunday June 21st, 2009
It was a scorching Sunday morning at the Britannia ground which greeted the visitors from up the road, Pudsey Saint Lawrence. The Congs won the toss and decided to bat. This week they opened with R Kettlewell and D Hussain in front of a large crowd for this local derby. Hussain set off in typical fashion smashing two fours off the first two balls, with Kettlewell playing well at the other end scoring a lovely boundary, these two put on 17 for the loss of one wicket. Next in were J Allen and J Stolarski. Joe played to instructions and did really well keeping his wicket intact against some very good deliveries and Jacque was his usual steady self picking the bad balls and scoring 9 without loss. Following them were Harry and Jack Allman. Harry unfortunately was out twice but a tremendous batting display at the other end saw Jack hitting shots all over the ground scoring 20 not out; well done! Last in for the Congs were the batting pait of Ahmed and O Hussain. These two batted steady with some good running between the wickets progressing the final score onto 241 for 4.
So it was the turn of PSL and after a good start by Congs bowlers, the away side had scored just two runs. The consistent Danny Ahmed struck bowling Ben Rhodes with the PSL openers putting on 14 for one wicket. The next pair came in and R Kettlewell provided some tight bowling with D Hussain chipping in with a wicket, they put on 12 runs for the loss of one wicket. Next in were J Crampton and J Pearce. These two scored 20 runs for the loss of two wickets with some good bowling from H Allman, O Hussain and J Stolarski. So with the game evenly balanced, the last two batters came into the crease and with both excellent defensive batting and good bowling by the home side, it went to the last over with Congs needing a wicket from it to win. J Allen bowled very well but was very unlucky not to get the desired wicket. PSL held out for the win in a very entertaining game. Special mention must go to the under nines who came up to the 11’s to help out due the three players on Yorkshire commitments. The players that stepped up were H Allman, O Hussain and J Stolarski, all fine cricketers to watch for in the future.
Bradford & Bingley v Pudsey Congs
Sunday June 7th, 2009
On an overcast day, the Congs were the visitors to the Bradford & Bingley ground looking to avenge a defeat earlier in the season. Congs lost the toss and the home side decided to bat and sharp started nicely with a 4. At the other end, D Hussain claimed a wicket with his third delivery with the opening pair finishing up scoring 19 for the loss of 2 wickets. The next pair came in and batted steadily putting on 15 for the loss of 1 wicket with tight bowling from both Allen and Colley. Nicoll and Cloudson came in for the home side and put 15 on without loss with R Kettlewell bowling especially well being very unlucky on a few occasions and going for 9 runs from his two overs. The last pair came in and with some tight bowling, on came Danish Hussain to bowl the last over. He promptly took 2 wickets with some excellent line leaving B & B on 230 for the loss of 5 wickets.
The Congs then started to bat and opened with the inform Colley and Hussain. Danish Hussain is on fire at the moment with the bat and set about the bowling with a display that was an absolute pleasure to watch, hitting 7 boundaries in a total of 32. Our opening pair had finished the score on 232, a remarkable effort. Next in were J Allman and R Kettlewell and they kept their wicket intact, despite some good B & B bowling. Following them in were J Allen and L Leonard. Some good defence from Leonard, followed by some classy shots from Allen, including four boundries, took the score onto 269 and the Congs were cruising at this point. Next in were D Ahmed and A Hussain. These two produced some good shots but decided they were going to run for everything and finished up being run out between them three times. Afterwards Mark Allman remarked that he had jet black hair before they came in and it was now a distinct shade of grey!!!
So Pudsey finished on 247, winning the game. Many thanks to Bradford & Bingley for their hospitality. The Pudsey U11 bandwagon rolls on, thats five on the bounce, well done guys !!
Pudsey Congs v Manningham Mills
Sunday May 31st, 2009
Manningham Mills were the visitors to the Britannia Ground this week. They won the toss and put the Congs into bat. Opening the batting were D Hussain and T Colley, who put on a splendid 39 runs for the first wicket losing just the one wicket. Next in were J Allman and Z Mahmood with Mahmood batting well for 17. Following them were J Allen and R Kettlewell with both players hitting a couple of nice boundaries on the way to adding 18 runs for the loss of a wicket. Bringing up the rear for the Congs attack were M Rafique and Danny Ahmed who both kept their wickets intact. Rafique kept the crowd entertained once again with a brilliant 30, so the score was set for Mills at 303, a very good days work.
Danny Ahmed opened the bowling and promptly struck in his first over and with rafique bowling very well at the other end, limited the openers to 10 runs for the loss of two wickets. The next pair in for Manningham were also to struggle for runs due to some tight bowling by Colley, having just two runs of his two overs despite staying up all night watching the Britains got talent final. A fantastic spell from J Allen finishing with 4 for 20 from his 3 overs. R Kettlewell came on, also to pin the batsmen down with a maiden and so the last pair came in and despite adding 27 runs, they lost two wickets to leave Mills on a final score of 193. Special mention to Danish Hussain who took a couple of great catches in the field.
All in all, a great team performance and well done to Manningham Mills for playing in good spirit and sticking at it
East Bierley v Pudsey Congs
JCT 600 Cup, 2nd Round
Wednesday May 27th, 2009
Special report by Dominic Allen
On a cool, windy and cloudy evening, the Congs U-11s visited East Bierley for what was to be their first outing in the new 20-20 Cup. Played under standard cricket rules this format offered the youngsters none of the protection afforded by the Sunday morning league matches. It would be a stern test of the boys’ characters more than anything and the parents and coaches hoped they could make the necessary adjustment. It was quite clear from the off that they had a huge advantage over their opposition as, sadly, East Bierley had not recognised the format change and could only muster seven players. Jacques Allen again won the toss and inserted the opposition. Danesh Hussain and Danni Ahmed opened the bowling in front of an unexpectedly large crowd, bearing in mind the game coincided with the Champions League Final. The game started steadily but exploded into life in the fifth over bowled by Zaheed Mahmood when three wickets fell with the score on six. Another fine catch from Tom Colley started the rot by removing Declan Blakeley and a fizzing leg spinner accounted for Curtis Hill third ball. When Joe Taylor was run out without troubling the scorers, Colley followed up his catch with two excellent turning deliveries to leave East Bierley on the edge of a precipice at 20-5 and only one wicket to fall in view of their lack of numbers. Ryan Stewart and Max Thompson dug in for the home team and almost doubled their total but they were merely delaying the inevitable and East Bierley were bowled out for 37, using only 13 of their allotted overs.
East Bierley 37 all out
What followed was cruel on the home side and one had to feel for them, whilst at the same time marvelling at the stroke play of Danesh Hussain. He smashed the first over for 22 runs; all but one of the deliveries finding the boundary. The match was finished after just three overs, Hussain finishing on 27 not out, Tom Colley 1 not out. It is difficult to imagine a more emphatic victory and whilst it has to be said that the opposition were clearly below strength (and numbers) you can only beat what is placed in front of you. Pudsey demonstrated a level of awareness that would almost certainly have seen them win the game against a full strength East Bierley team. Make no mistake; this was a strong performance and it bodes well for future rounds.
One further point worth making is that special thanks go out to all of the U-9 players that helped out, Joe Stolarski, Josh Chapman and Harry Jackson. Their fielding was exemplary and they did themselves proud.
Pudsey Congs 38-0, Congs Progress
Pudsey Congs v Saltaire
Sunday May 24th, 2009
Special report by Dominic Allen
The U-11s game against Saltaire took place on the first truly warm day of the season and this ensured a decent crowd was in place to witness an historic occasion. Captain Jacques Allen won the toss and decided to insert Saltaire on what appeared a very flat but saturated wicket. The former adjective proved most apt however, with the moisture providing a complete red herring and the pitch playing to almost county ground standards, as not a ball deviated all day. In conjunction with some very short, square boundaries, a run-glut was all but guaranteed. In the absence of the Allman family, Ross Kettlewell donned the gloves for the thankless task behind the stumps. Mustafa Rafique and Danni Ahmed opened the bowling with two very tight spells. Ahmed has very quickly established himself as a mainstay member of the team and is an accurate left arm medium pacer, conceding just four runs from his three overs. Zaheed Mahmood and Danesh Hussain followed; Mahmood looking particularly impressive on debut against Saltaire’s best batsman, Lee Robinson. Robinson hit him for several fours but he bowled some superb leg spin deliveries, containing flight, loop and no small amount of turn. Saltaire’s score was fairly rocketing along when a huge turning point in the game took place; a brilliant catch by Tom Colley off the bowling of Hussain. It was hit straight at him but like a tracer-bullet and at this age group such chances take some catching. This appeared to diminish the ferocity of the Saltaire attack and the scoring rate never quite reached the same dizzy heights. Tom followed this up with a further display of excellent leg spin bowling and fortunately for Pudsey, wickets continued to fall. Jacques Allen and Awaisse Hussain completed the bowling line up and a total of 250 appeared as though it would take some getting at half time.
Saltaire 250-5
The fact that it didn’t was largely down to Danesh Hussain who almost single-handedly knocked the stuffing out of the Saltaire side. Opening with Tom Colley, he scored a gargantuan 39 runs in a partnership that almost wiped out the initial 50 run deficit. Hussain hits the ball with a brutal power that is extremely rare at his age group. Colley was a magnificent foil at the other end, looking a picture of solidity. Zahid Mahmood and Awaisse Hussain followed and continued to score freely, Mahmood in particular cashing in on some wayward bowling. The game was all but over at the half way stage of the innings, Pudsey being 25 runs in credit already. They suffered a minor setback when Jacques Allen somehow contrived to be bowled twice, once to a careless stroke, the other being a victim of misfortune, playing on a wide ball off his legs but he did manage to score 22 runs. When Rafique and Ahmed came together for the final pairing, the result was a foregone conclusion. Posting a steady 17 runs between them for the loss of only one wicket, Pudsey finished on a net score of 308, the highest in the club’s history at this level. This was a strong performance all round from the boys and bearing mind there is much improvement to be made in the field and players to come back, other teams will be nervous when making their visit to the Britannia Ground this season.
Pudsey Congs 308-3
Tong Park v Pudsey Congs
Sunday May 17th, 2009
Tong Park was to be the venue of the under 11’s first away match of the young season and Congs were put into bat first. The Congs started soundly with R Kettlewell and Thomas Colley putting on eleven runs without loss on a very unpredictable wicket. Next in were Liam Leonard and Jacque Allen, both again batting well with Allen making 14. At this stage Congs were going well with the the loss of only one wicket. Next in for Pudsey was Jack and Harry Allman and in some good defensive batting, put four runs on without loss. Jacks dad remarked this was the longest he had seen them together without arguing!!! Last in for Pudsey was M Rafique and D Ahmed. Ahmed showing solid defence and Rafique playing superb for 20 not out, making a final total of 272 for 1 a very good score. So Tong Park then began their innings and their openers put on 19 runs without loss against some good bowling from J Allen and especially Danny Ahmed who beat the bat on several occasions. The next two batters came in and despite not losing a wicket added just six runs to the total struggling against some hostile bowling from Rafique and good leg spin from Colley. The third pair came in and added six runs for the loss of one wicket with Jack Allman taking a stumping chance. So onto the last pair and with Tong Park having a mountain to climb, Rafique rose to the occasion with J Allman taking a catch behind that his hero Barney Gibson would have been proud of. Thomas Colley weighed in with a great catch so in the end, a very comfortable win for Pudsey in what was to be a really good team effort. Special mention to Danny Ahmed for his excellent bowling and fantastic fielding, well done.
Pudsey Congs v Keighley
Sunday May 10th, 2009
Pudsey entertained high flying Keighley looking for a win on a overcast Sunday morning. Keighley won the toss and put the home side into bat. Debutant Danny Ahmed opened the batting with R Kettlewell and put on nine runs for no wickets, a good start. Next in was Jacque Allen and L Leonard, these two also kept their wicket intact with Allen scoring a superb 13. Next in were Jack Allman and Harry Jackson. These two kept up the trend of not losing a wicket, both batting well with Jack scoring a useful five runs. Last in for the Congs was M Rafique and Harry Allman. These two were to add twelve runs to the total but sadly for the loss of three wickets due to some crazy running between the wickets. Pudsey finished on 233 for 3.
Keighley then began their innings and started solidly. The openers scoring nine without loss with excellent batting from D Birkett. Next two came in for Keighley and J Overend took to the Pudsey bowling scoring 18. This pair lost a wicket off the bowling of Harry Jackson, who bowled excellently. The next pair came in and didn’t trouble the scoreboard too much but also didn’t lose a wicket and by the time the last pair came in, the game was very evenly balanced. With Harry Allman’s third over in the match, A Hussain edged a catch behind to Jack Allman who took the catch well. Jacque Allen took a wicket in his last over but the scoreboard was ticking along and with Rafique bowling the last over, Keighley were one run in front. Rafique went close a couple of times nearly bowling the opposing batsmen three times but it wasn’t to be and Keighley finished up winners by one run. Whilst this is a defeat and nobody enjoys losing, everybody left the ground agreeing that this was a fantastic advert for under 11s cricket and well done to both teams for that
Pudsey Congs v Bradford & Bingley (Home Opener)
At The Britannia Ground
Sunday April 26th, 2009
It was an unusually sunny start to the cricket season at the Britannia ground as a such depleted Congs side took to the field without four players who were in the final trial for Yorkshire and we wish them good luck. Jack Allman (Capt) won the toss and put the opposition into bat. Jack Allen opened the bowling and took a wicket with his third delivery. Jack Allman bowled tight at the other end going for four runs in his first over and following up with a maiden. Jacque Allen struck again in his second over, the next two in for B&B were to make big inroads with M Walker scoring sixteen runs without loss, but also some very tidy bowling from Harry Jackson making his debut and eventually finishing with figures of 3-2-6-0. The next pair in scored 21 runs for the loss of only 1 wicket, good bowling by Liam Leonard and Daniel Lock, also making their debuts. The last pair came in and kept the score board ticking over for the visitors with 15 runs with the loss of 3 wickets including an excellent run out by Harry Allman, leaving a final total for the visitors of 228.
Pudsey Congs opened their innings with Ross Kettlewell and Thomas Colley making his debut. Both batted solidly and left the field making 10 runs without loss of their wicket. The next pair in were Jacque Allen and Harry Jackson. Harry batted well whilst Jacque really cut loose scoring 21 runs including 5 boundaries. The next pair were Liam Leonard and Daniel Lock. These 2 batted really well losing just 2 wickets but with the score looking a little depleted, the last 2 came in being Jack and Harry Allman. Jack hitting 2 excellent boundaries but finished up being out 3 times due to pushing for runs to chase the winning total and this left Congs losing 7 wickets in total making their final score 198.
All boys that came in today have done really well and rest assured there will be much more to come from the under 11’s side this season.

Pudsey Congs v Idle
Thursday July 16th, 2009
In the overcast skies and drizzly rain, an almost full strength Pudsey Congs team welcomed Idle down to the Britannia Ground knowing that only a point would clinch them the title giving them an unassailable 16 point lead at the top. Pudsey Congs captain Barney Gibson won the toss and elected to field first in the hope to force a result. As usual, all ten bowlers bowled with all good lines and lengths, swinging the ball in the overcast skies. Pressure was applied well with 2 caught and bowled chanced being taken by Louis and Alex as well as a fantastic one handed catch (at the second attempt) by Dale in the outfield and a high hanging catch by Raees. Wasim and Dale were amongst the pick of the bowlers as usual with Wasim spinning his way to 2-1-4-1 with an excellent catch from Danish and Dale claiming 2-0-3-1. This was followed by a double wicket maiden from Irslan who went on to bowl 2-1-4-2 with both of his wickets being bowled, a superb Yorker followed by an in swinger which clipped the very top of the off stump. With Kamran and Louis also bowling good spells and taking a wicket a piece including a superb full length diving catch from wicket keeper batsman and captain Barney Gibson, Idle were eventually dismissed for 69 from 19 overs.
Wasim Bashir 2-1-4-1 , Irslan Ahmed 2-1-4-2, Dale Spink 2-0-3-1, Kamran Khan 2-1-3-1
Unfortunately the rain became much heavier at the half way stage and both umpires agreed after a 15 minute wait, that the rain would not ease and even if it did the ground would be unsafe to play on meaning the match was called a draw making the Congs league champions.
A fantastic effort lads, this is an amazing achievement to win comfortably with games in hand, there is no ease up now though, let’s go on and do the double, we deserve it.
Pudsey Congs v Pudsey St Lawrence
JCT 600 Cup Quarter Final
Monday July 13th, 2009
On another cold and wet night on a green tinged wicket, Pudsey Congs welcomed their neighbours PSL to the Britannia Ground in what promised to be a well supported and enthralling cup quarter final. PSL won the toss and predictably elected to bowl first with both teams loving to chase.
Captain Barney Gibson had returned for tonight’s game so the opening partnership of himself and Callum was restored. As usual Congs got off to a well paced start going along at 5 an over on what was a large ground, however, Congs looked in a spot of bother when Callum fell for 18 and Wasim fell first ball! However, the ever dependable pairing of Dale Spink and Barney Gibson soldiered on and continued to make the scoreboard tick over not allowing the Congs to lose wickets and to build pressure on the bowlers. This meant that when Barney finally retired to much deserved rapturous applause and Dale fell 2 short of retirement after one big shot too many, the Congs had a great launch platform to finish the innings well with wickets in hand and after a final frantic and big hitting few overs Congs emerged 114-6 a good score on a green wicket. However, as ever they knew they would have to bowl well if they wished to progress to the semi final. However, PSL knew that with a blistering start they would be in with a very
Barney Gibson 30* & Dale Spink 28
Opening bowlers Stuart Ward and Raess Ishtiaq made sure PSL got off to no such start bowling very accurate and extremely tight lines whilst being fantastically well supported in the field by large amounts of noise being led, as ever by the pocket sized megaphone Dale Spink. This meant that after 5 overs, PSL were already well behind the rate at 10-1 and the run rate proved far too great and the bowling and fielding far too good. Congs were clinical in their approach to this defence and overpowered their opponents who they always felt would be a serious challenge. Wickets began to fall at regular intervals to all bowlers who were as ever supported by all fielders who took impressive catches both running in from the deep and close in the infield. Special praise has to be given to the extremely impressive Callum Murgatroyd who claimed 4 wickets at the death for only 5 runs, a truly fantastic spell. PSL were eventually dismissed for a mere 53 meaning the Congs ensured a dramatic win which was to launch them into the semi finals of the cup to great applause.
Enough praise cannot be placed on all the players who took part in the game tonight, games involving local rivalries can be hostile at all times never mind in cup quarter finals but all players played well within the spirit of the game and PSL were defeated graciously to a very deserved Congs team.
Stuart Ward 3-0-4-1 & Wasim Bashir 3-1-6
Farsley v Pudsey Congs
Thursday July 9th, 2009
On a very cold and blustery July evening, the Congs headed up to Farsley without captain Barney Gibson looking to go only one win away from claiming the league title and looking for a good contest as a warm up for the up and coming cup quarter final.
Stand in Captain Wasim Bashir won the toss and for a change elected to bat first. Regular opener Callum Murgatroyd who was still in fine form was opened by the ever impressive Dale Spink who would be sure to get the innings off to an electric start….. and so he did retiring with only 4 overs gone in the game hitting 5 fours in that period whilst also seeing out a maiden! Callum once more battled through dealing mainly in singles applying pressure to the Farsley fielders before he retired in a still brisk 9 overs. Wasim also batted well claiming yet another 30 retired playing some very aggressive shots which were at times straight shots! Meaning that when the Congs finished their 20 overs they had an extremely defendable 139-7.
Callum Murgatroyd 33*, Dale Spink 31*, Wasim Bashir 32*
Those who did not bat opened the bowling with Alex Goodchild starting the innings with a wicket maiden. A tone which was followed throughout the innings with Irslan Ahmed, Raees Istiaq and Andrew Smith taking wicket maidens as well as Callum Murgatroyd. All in all this was a very good bowling performance by all 11 men on the field who did very well on a small ground to restrict Farsley to 74-4. Very well done boys, just one more win now.
Alex Goodchild 2-1-2-1, Callum Murgatroyd 1-1-0-1, Raees Istiaq 1-1-0-2, Andrew Smith 2-1-1-2
Pudsey Congs v Bolton Villas
Thursday July 2nd, 2009
On yet another seasonally warm evening, Pudsey Congs defended their unbeaten run against a very strong looking Bolton Villas side who were hoping to make a late charge for the league. Pudsey Congs won the toss once more and elected to bat first hoping to set a large total to defend in a similar style which they used to beat Thackley in the previous top of the table clash. Pudsey Congs continued with the extremely inform opening combination of Barney Gibson and Callum Murgatroyd, who once again dominated the Bolton villas bowling attack looking to set a high tempo to the Pudsey Congs innings allowing no bowler to set themselves into a rhythm. Both openers showed their class and both retired once more continuing their extremely impressive seasons so far having both been vital to several Congs victories. This was followed by another impressive innings from Wasim Bashir who hit another quick fire 27 before he fell trying to retire with a big shot. The Congs maintained this high tempo throughout their innings and eventually amassed an impressive 134-5 from their 20 overs.
Barney Gibson 33*, Callum Murgatroyd 31*, Wasim Bashir 27
Congs were confident when taking the field to defend their total and this confidence proved well founded by the Congs bowling attack, especially so when Wasim removed Bolton Villas best two batsmen for relatively little scores; both trying to sweep the young off spinner. This was followed by Dale bowling 3 economical overs and taking a wicket along with the ever impressive Danish who bowled 3 overs for just 2 runs also taking a wicket. As ever, the bowling was equally shared throughout the team and everyone bowled well as ever and Bolton Villas eventually closed 73-9 from their 20 overs. Enough praise cannot be heaped on this extremely impressive young team who now need to close out the title. Keep it up lads and the trophy (and I’m sure free pints of Coke from me and Abid) at the end of season presentation.
Wasim Bashir 3-1-14-2, Dale Spink 3-1-7-1, Danish Hussain 3-2-2-1
Pudsey Congs v Thackley
Thursday June 25th, 2009
Pudsey Congs welcomed Thackley tonight to the Britannia ground in what promised to be a tight and thrilling top of the table clash in the Pudsey sunshine. Congs won the toss and elected to bowl first hoping to chase Thackley’s total on a good batting track. Congs opened the bowling with Wasim Bashir and Dale Spink who set the tone for the innings bowling aggressively and tight offering very little width limiting scoring shots whilst building pressure on a Thackley team who needed to win. Dale then made a breakthrough in the 3rd over, which was followed by another from Wasim in the 5th as well as Raees Ishtiaq in the 8th, which meant that the Thackley innings could never gather momentum. However, Thackley did prove their class in establishing a 34 run partnership for the 6th wicket before losing more late wickets late on meaning that they limped to 79-8 from their 20 overs.
Dale Spink 3-1-5-1, Wasim Bashir 3-1-6-1, Irslaan Ahmed 3-0-6-0
In reply Congs ensured that they kept above the rate from the first over as to ensure that they were under as little pressure as possible when they were chasing. Barney however, departed early in the innings from a truly superb run out ending in a direct hit. Callum continued in his superb form and stroked his way to 31 retired with a superb and mature innings showing his class at this age level. He was ably supported by Dale who kept the scoring rate high and keeping Congs in a commanding position. Dale eventually perished for 24 trying to score the winning runs however these were eventually scored by Wasim Bashir who ensured Congs reached their target with 4 overs to spare.
This was a fantastic all round performance where the Congs showed their true class against a very good opponent. Keep this up boys and the title will soon be ours.
Callum Murgatroyd 31*, Dale Spink 24
Undercliffe v Pudsey Congs
Thursday June 18th, 2009
Pudsey Congs today took on heavy Underdogs Undercliffe who would be hoping to take revenge on a Congs side who inflicted a heavy defeat upon them in the early stages of the season. Pudsey Congs won the toss and elected to bat first. The Congs altered the batting order for the game and used a new opening pair of Andy Smith and Louis Surtees who were both looking to make an impression with the bat. Louis batted well until he was unfortunately bowled for 4 but Andy continued with typical style and flair before he eventually retired unbeaten on 30. This brought young Danish to the crease who batted well once more in his usual confident style until he was run out for 11. Usual batsman Dale and Barney followed with Dale producing a rare short outing scoring only 6 but Barney continued in his usual fashion scoring 30 retired in just 4 overs leaving wasim Bashir (23*) and Alex Goodchild (16*) to finish the innings so that Congs posted 138-4 from their 20 overs.
In reply Congs opted to allow every player a bowl with everybody bowling well with none of the 10 bowlers used being expensive and Irslan Ahmed and Owaise Hussain taking two wickets each with Wasim and Bashir and daanish Hussain also bowling maidens meaning that from 20 overs Undercliffe reached 57-7 with two run outs. A fantastic effort boys avoiding a potential banana skin and playing extremely professionally and avoiding complacency.
Bradford & Bingley v Pudsey Congs
YCB National Cup Round 2
Tuesday June 16th, 2009
In National league cup action on a uncharacteristically warm Tuesday night, a Pudsey Congs XI fresh from victory the previous night travelled across Bradford to take on Bradford and Bingley in what promised to be a tight affair. Pudsey Congs lost the toss and were placed into bat on what looked to be a good batting track. The innings was opened this week by usual opener Callum Murgatroyd and the inform Dale Spink, who both provided impetus to the Congs innings setting the early pace. Dale however soon departed for 13 but Callum continued in great form and retired once more on 31* proving his textbook batting technique is a vital part in steadying the Congs innings on a consistent basis. Congs skipper Barney Gibson and Stuart Ward put together a fantastic 3rd wicket stand of 74 including both batsman running well between the wickets and hitting beautiful boundaries meaning that at the half way stage Congs had posted 129-3 for the loss of only 3 wickets which placed them in a commanding position once more.
Callum Murgatroyd 31*, Barney Gibson 30*, Stuart Ward 30*
The Congs opened the bowling with Dale and Stuart, who once again bowled extremely well building the pressure from an early stage not allowing the Bradford and Bingley batman to build a platform and score easy runs with both also taking a crucial wicket. These spells were ably followed by yet more spells by Callum, Danish and Wasim who gave the batman very little room and limited the scoring shots superbly. Within the innings there were also only 3 extras which show the skill of the Congs bowling and when Bradford and Bingley finished their innings 79 all out, Congs deserved to progress in the cup. Well done lads, keep it up.
Dale Spink 3-0-10-1, Wasim Bashir 2-1-1-2, Irslan Ahmed 1-0-1-1
Pudsey Congs v Woodlands
JCT 600 Cup Second Round
Monday June 15th, 2009
Despite the torrential mid day downpour, an under strength Congs XI hosted Spen Victoria CC at the Britannia ground looking to progress in the JCT 600 Cup. Captain Barney Gibson won the toss and elected to field first on what appeared to be a damp wicket with a slow outfield in a 18 over a side game. Even with all the rain that had fallen, front line Congs spinner Wasim Bashir still managed to extract both turn and bounce from the wicket causing Spen Victoria batsman many problems as he bowled 3 overs for only 7 runs taking a wicket. This spell was backed up superbly by Callum Murgatroyd who bowled yet another tight spell, bowling 3 overs for only 9 runs also taking a wicket and the ever impressive Dale Spink who bowled 3 overs for 11 taking one wicket. This excellent bowling, superbly supported in the field which was exemplified by a superb catch by Louis on the boundary meant that Spen Victoria reached 88-6 from their 18 overs.
Congs set about their reply in a typically aggressive style with Barney scoring yet another fantastic 32* in quick time to place the Congs firmly on the front foot. Dale unfortunately failed; a rare occurrence so far this season. However, the ship was steadied from yet more top quality batting from Wasim Bashir 19* and Callum Muragtroyd 16* meaning that Congs reached their target with four overs remaining. A comprehensive victory which left Congs looking like strong contenders for the cup.
Pudsey Congs v Pudsey St Lawrence
Thursday June 11th, 2009
A still unbeaten Congs side welcomed second in the table Pudsey St Lawrence down to the Britannia ground for a game which promised to be a thriller with some of the league; if not Yorkshires best talent on show. PSL won the toss and elected to field first meaning that for a welcome change Congs would set a total rather than chase.
For the first time this season the game was played for the full 20 overs meaning that Congs had more overs to bat in the hope of setting a high and defendable total on a quick outfield and batting friendly wicket. Unfortunately the extremely inform Barney Gibson departed early on for 9 runs which brought Callum and Dale to the crease together who immediately began setting about this scoring runs quickly and pressuring the field. Both batted extremely well with Dale opting for a powerful approach and Callum measuring the innings well playing fluid and well timed strokes, meaning that against a very strong PSL bowling attack, Congs posted an extremely defendable and well fought for 102-6 with team moral running high but the game still in the balance.
In reply, PSL got off to a slow start due to an extremely strong Congs bowling attack with pick of the bowlers Stuart ward bowling 3 overs for only 6 runs and taking a crucial wicket. However, despite PSL being below the run rate for the vast majority of their innings and requiring 63 from the last 6 overs, many of the Congs bowlers had bowled their full allotment of three overs and were unable to bowl with PSL having wickets in hand. Fortunately the Congs chose this moment to show their class and prove why they are top of the league with 3 run outs and not a single dropped catch. Eventually the run rate amounted too high for PSL who finished their innings 96-4 with Pudsey Congs remaining unbeaten and establishing a healthy gap at the top of the table despite being pushed all the way. Another terrific performance boys, continue like this and we can progress in both cup competitions next week.
Pudsey Congs v Woodlands
Thursday June 4th, 2009
On yet another overcast and dreary night in June, an inform Pudsey Congs side welcomed Woodlands down to the Britannia ground in an 18 overs a side affair.
Pudsey Congs, with stand in Captain Wasim Bashir, won the toss and elected to field first, a tactic which had been extremely successful so far in the season with Congs still unbeaten. As ever the Congs bowlers bowled fantastically well on a rare appearance on a 1st XI wicket. Andrew Smith bowled good tight lines taking two wickets in his two overs conceding only 7 runs, a testament to yet more fantastic Congs fielding. Alex Goodchild bowled well once again bowling a wicket maiden featuring a fantastic catch from Wasim Bashir who was leading from the front. Woodlands never looked like posting a large total against the Congs bowling attack and after 18 overs, they eventually amounted 72-7. Not enough praise can be given for the fantastic effort in the field tonight, on a large ground the Congs fielders restricted the scoring greatly with fantastic ground fielding and accurate throws to the stand in keeper Dale Spink, who did a brilliant job behind the stumps.
With Barney absent due to Yorkshire commitments, Dale opened with usual opener Callum Murgatroyd and from ball one the result never looked in any form of doubt. Dale batted skillfully and as powerfully as usual, proving that he was definitely up to the job of opening and quickly racing to his 30 not out, gaining the applause he greatly deserved. Callum also paced the innings well grafting a skillfully crafted 25 not out giving very few chances. Wasim joined him at number 3 and gained 6 not out meaning that Congs chased down the 73 run target with overs to spare and without losing a single wicket!
Another fantastic performance boys well done, proving the strength and depth in the Congs side without captain and keeper, keep going and there is definitely no reason why we can’t be lifting the league trophy at the end of the season.
Idle v Pudsey Congs
Thursday May 28th, 2009
On a seasonably warm evening an almost full strength Congs eleven travelled to nearby Idle, a match which held much promise. Uncharacteristically Congs batted first this week and Barney Gibson looked back in form with a sublime quick fire 26 to get the Congs off to a very good start. Unfortunately, Callum could not reproduce his heroics of the previous week and quickly departed after seeing off the openers. However, Dale Spink immediately picked up from where he left off against Guisley following his 27 with a fantastic 30* meaning that Congs had proved they could not only chase runs but could set very competitive match winning scores.
Congs looked as lively as ever in the field using all ten men as bowlers with all ten showing their worth with excellent tight spells by all involved. This was personified by Irslann’s 2 overs which were both maidens, a terrific effort! Other highlights included Owais who bowled 3 overs for just 7 runs taking 2 wickets and Wasim who impressed once more bowling 2 overs for just 3 runs also taking a wicket.
In truth the victory never looked in doubt for Congs tonight, confidence is highly visible throughout the team at the moment and they are all willing and able to support each other with not only great skill but a great team moral. A fantastic job again boys keep it up for the rest of the season.
Congs 114-2, Idle 62-6
Pudsey Congs v Guisley
YCB National Cup Round 1
Sunday May 24th, 2009
On a warm summers day, Congs played host to Guisley in the first round of the National Cup. Setting out with high hopes the Congs won the toss and chose to bowl once more against what looked like a very well organised Guisley team who could match Congs all the way.
All the Congs bowlers once again bowled very tight and accurate spells on a hard, bouncy and quick Britannia cricket pitch with much respect having to be given to the groundsman John Malpass. Irslann bowled extremely well leading the attack bowling 2 overs taking a wicket and going for a mere 2 runs. He was skillfully supported by the magnificent leg spin of Wasim who mixed his deliveries with elegant off breaks and top spinners.
In reply Congs lost Barney early for a duck with his only failure of the season so far. However, Callum showed his class as an opener with a lovely and elegant 31 retired not out which combined powerful hitting with beautiful stroke play. Dale showed great support showing that size really does not matter whilst batting hitting 27 in the Congs reply meaning that Congs reached their target comfortably.
Another fantastic display by a young Congs side who performed well with bat and ball as well as in the field with fantastic fielding and support which was exemplified by Wasim’s fantastic catch in the deep. Another very good effort lads keep it up and we can progress well in the cup and maybe even claim some silverware for the cabinet.
Guisley 73-9, Congs 74-3
Bolton Villas v Pudsey Congs
Thursday May 14th, 2009
This week an unbeaten Pudsey Congs U13’s took on an impressive Bolton Villas team who looked to provide a tricky opponent. However, the Congs dressing room was in high spirits when Barney Gibson went out to toss and it was decided that the Congs would bowl first once more.
After last weeks performance, coach Abid Bashir decided that each bowler would bowl 2 overs each so everybody would get a chance especially those who had done very little in the season so far. Raees opened the bowling with another fantastic economical spell seeing his overs go for a mere 3 runs. Stuart opened with his impressive spin bowling at the other end and achieved the crucial breakthrough bowling his 2 overs for only 5 runs and claiming a vital wicket. All bowlers bowled tight lines and focused on good lines and lengths. Fielding on the whole was also good for the Congs meaning that Bolton Villas closed their 18 overs 77-3 with the other 2 wickets falling to Kamran and Louis.
Barney and Callum strode out to the middle in high hopes of yet another Congs victory and the two got the team of to a reasonable start with Congs having 23 on the board before the loss of Callum. Barney played yet more splendid shots before unfortunately spooning a full toss straight to mid wicket; an unfortunate way to end a promising innings. Wasim upped the tempo of the innings smashing 4 boundaries in 2 overs to ensure Congs were up with the rate and when he departed, Raees and Stuart continued to nudge and nurdle Congs on their way to victory with the final winning runs being hit with 5 balls to spare. An impressive and well paced run chase.
This was another good performance from an extremely good under 13s team who still remain unbeaten. Hopefully this run can continue and the league can be captured.
Pudsey Congs v Undercliffe (Home Opener)
Thursday May 7th, 2009
Buoyant after two straight wins, the Congs welcomed Undercliffe this evening with the coach opting for a more conventional tactic of fielding the full allocation of 11 men!
Undercliffe batted first and the innings mirrored that of the two previous opponents. Callum Murgatroyd opened the attack and took four wickets in his 3 overs conceding only 1 run! He was ably supported by Stuart Ward who took 3 wickets from two overs conceding only 2 runs. Fantastic spells were bowled by all bowlers with excellent lines and lengths backed with good pace and swing. This all proved too much for Undercliffe who could only reach 24 all out.
The Congs innings again mirrored previous weeks with the same openers who never looked in any trouble with Barney smashing 19 from only 9 deliveries including 4 extremely elegant boundaries. Congs reached the target from only 1.5 overs with the full 10 wickets remaining; a comprehensive victory.
I would like to thank Undercliffe for playing the game in a great spirit and most of all still enjoying themselves no matter what the result was, well done Undercliffe! However, overall, Congs proved far too strong for Undercliffe on the night and maintained their unbeaten run, stretching it to 3 games. Another fantastic effort lads; carry it into next week.
Pudsey Congs v Woodlands
JCT 600 Cup First Round
Monday May 4th, 2009
Coach Abid Bashir again opted for the unusual tactic of only fielding 8 men this week but after the success of last week why not?
Woodlands batted first this week and the same intensity that the Congs showed last week continued again with an impressive bowling attack. Raees Ishtiaq opened once again and bowled yet another impressive spell conceding only 4 runs from his 3 overs and taking a wicket. All bowlers hit good lines and lengths on what appeared to be a decent batting track with all bowlers taking a wicket and keeping the scoring rate low. From their 16 overs, Woodlands could only amass 54 runs which was a true reflection on a great Congs performance in the field.
The Congs opened the batting with the same combination of Barney and Callum and once again both batted well setting Congs off on a good, solid start. By the time Callum was out, victory was almost assured with Congs reaching their target after 8.2 overs with Barney earning another 28 not out to add to his impressive 31 the previous week. All Congs batters looked comfortable and assured at the crease and if they continue is this way I am sure that some big scores are on the horizon. Another fantastic performance well played again.
Thackley v Pudsey Congs (Season Opener)
Thursday April 30th, 2009
The under 13’s season kicked off today with a very positive start from a very under nourished Congs side. Despite the best efforts from coach Abid Bashir to field 11 players, Congs could only field 8 but in the end class would show.
Despite the obvious advantage, Congs fielded first and bowled superbly well by restricting Thackley to a mere 69- 7 from their 20 overs. The tone for the innings was set early on with R. Ishtaq opening with a wicket maiden. Congs bowled 7 maidens overall which is a true testament to the high standards set by the club as singles were limited despite large gaps in the field. Special mentions also go to Wasim Bashir who bowled four overs taking two wickets for a mere seven runs as well as Danish Hussain 3-1-3-1, Alex Goodchild 3-2-4-1 and Cameron Khan 3-1-4-0.
Team moral was high after the extremely spirited effort in the field and the run chase never looked in doubt from ball one with Barney Gibson and Callum Murgatroyd hitting 14 off the first 2 overs and setting a tempo which never dropped. Unfortunately, Callum perished for 15 but Barney went on to retire on 31 with 6 boundaries, a truly fantastic innings. Congs reached the target after a mere 8 overs.
This was a fantastic display from the team with all 8 players playing to their full potential and supporting each other well in the field. In truth, the result was never in doubt and if 11 players can be fielded every week, I can see no reason why the league trophy cannot be in the clubhouse at the end of the season. Well played lads, keep it up!

Under 15’s, A season in review by Mark Gibson
Despite a disappointing end to the U15 season, a lot of positives can be taken from this years campaign. Our league efforts saw us finish runners up, winning 8 games from a possible 12. The cup run again took us to another semi final for the third time in three years. Although we just missed out again on putting any silverware in the cabinet, this season has been a great success in many ways, not least the way the lads are developing their skills as cricketers. These young men can look back on the 2009 season with a great deal of pride and be very proud of what they have achieved.
Many Thanks
Mark Gibson, U15 Manager
Pudsey Congs v Woodlands
Cup Semi Final
Monday July 20th, 2009
Cup fever hit the Britannia Ground with the eagerly awaited Cup Semi Final clash with Woodlands. Congs batted first and made steady progress in the opening exchanges with the ever reliable Ash Slater hitting another quick fire 31 to add to a very impressive season total. By the mid point the Congs had made their way to 55 with the loss of 3 wickets. The lads were unable to pick up the rate in the last 10 and the score moved along at five an over with Salim Qureshi playing well to finish the innings on an unbeaten 28 and leave the home side on 103.
Woodlands again made steady progress and ran well picking up the singles at every opportunity. Congs found it hard to take control of the game and dominate the away side and by the half way point the run rate was almost identical. Once again Callum Murgatroyd was in the thick of the action picking up 3 Woodlands wickets. Wickets from Robinson, Dalton and Qureshi built pressure on the away side as the game drew to a close. As in all great cup ties the game went to the final over with the away side needing 4 to win. Robinson took a wicket with his second ball and the game swayed the way of the home side. A single meant 3 off the last 2 offerings. Woodlands batsman N Lad held his nerve and hit a sweet shot through the covers to secure a well deserved win. The night ended in bitter disappointment for all involved but all credit to Woodlands for their efforts. The Lads must now put this behind them and concentrate on the remaining 2 league fixtures of the season.

Pudsey Congs v Thackley
Cup Quarter Final
Monday June 29th, 2009
Congs played host Thackley at the Britannia ground in a cup game that would see us through to a place in the semi finals. Having won the toss Congs elected to bat on what looked like a batters paradise. Congs opening pair of Keegan Moodley and Ash Slater got off to the best start the lads have had all season. Slater put the Thackley bowlers to the sword with a combination of fantastic cricket shots and brute force completing 50 in only 27 balls, a truly magnificent knock. Ably supported by Moodley, the pair put on 73 in only 8 overs. Cal Murgatroyd 35 continued his good run of form scoring freely. Moodley fell on 23 to leave the score on 77 for 1. Matt Humpleby joined Murgatroyd at the crease and continued to build on the solid start. Humpleby plundered his way to 41 of just 32 balls with some great cricket shots before he was caught going for another big hit. With the score on 161 for 2, Stephen Robinson entered the fray with just 1 over to go. In typical Robinson fashion he smashed 16 from six balls ,the highlight being a massive six back over the bowlers head to leave Congs on 177 for 2 after 20 overs. A truly fantastic effort that left Thackley shell shocked!!!!!!!!
Thackley set about chasing down the massive score but any hopes were shattered when Nathan Dalton removed the opening batsmen first ball. The team were buzzing in the field as wickets fell at regular intervals. Jamie Allan picked up 2 for 7 and Dale Spink added another 2 wickets to his season tally. Thackley did show some resistance and worked hard but could not sustain the run rate required. Tom Huffinley, Ash Slater and Jeevan Bazzra also picked up wickets to add to Thackley’s misery. By the 20th over, the away side had reached a respectable 112 for 9. The Congs Under 15’s now progress to the semi final stage of this years competition and it is hard to see anyone stopping them from booking a place in the final if the lads can reproduce another batting display of such quality.

Saltaire v Pudsey Congs
Sunday June 14th, 2009
A sun blessed morning was the order of the day at Roberts Park for a tough away fixture against Saltaire. The home side won the toss and decided to have a bat. The open pair showed their intent with some great running from ball one. Despite a less then friendly batting track, with the ball keeping very low at times, the openers made good progress. The first wicket fell with the score on 45 after 8 overs, Ash Slater making the breakthrough. Saltaire continued to run well taking advantage of a poor fielding display by Congs. M Thornton made his way to 47 before Slater picked up his second wicket to leave the score on 59 after 10 overs. Bally Lally was brought in to the attack and his first over brought 2 wickets for only 2 runs. In answer to this, Richard Wall made 24 not out and helped push Saltaire over the 100 mark. Dale Spink bowled a wicket maiden to finish the innings with the home side making 103.
In response the Congs run chase started slowly due to some tight bowling from Mohammed Nadim who gave very little away. After 6 overs Qureshi was bowled with the score on 21.Ash Slater made 10 before he was caught to leave the Congs in trouble on 36 after 10 overs. The middle order tried hard to up the tempo with Matt Humpleby 15, Steve Robinson 15, Dale Spink 10 and Tom Huffinley 8. Unfortunately this week it was a bridge to far and the lads managed to make 84 before running out of overs. Next week sees us up against local rivals PSL, we must improve in all departments if we are to win this fixture.

Pudsey Congs 84 for 8
Saltaire win by 29 runs
Pudsey Congs v Bolton Villas
Cup Second Round
Monday June 8th, 2009
Congs played host to Bolton villas in the second round of the U15 Cup. The away side won the toss and asked Congs to bat first. This seemed to be a good call when the 3rd ball of the match saw Barney Gibson bowled, sending the middle stump cart wheeling. Ash Slater joined Keegan Moodley at the crease and settled things down. The pair put on 67 before Slater was caught for 38. Moodley made 23 before he was dismissed trying to hit one out of the park. By the end of the 15th over the score stood at 73 for 4. It was left to Matt Humpleby and Stephen Robinson to launch a final assault on the Villas bowling. Some fine stroke play combined with some powerful hitting saw the pair put on over 40 runs in the last 5 overs with Matt 21 not out and Stephen 18 not out to leave the side in a great position with the score on 124 for 4 after 20 overs.
Tight opening spells from Robinson and Dalton gave only 18 runs off the first 6 overs. It was Dale Spink who got the breakthrough removing the very dangerous Nav Devesher for 19 and leaving the away side on 34 for 1 after 10 overs. With 91 to win off just 10 overs, Villa had to start taking chances. Wickets tumbled at regular intervals with Stuart Ward being the pick of the bowlers, with 3 wickets for 10 runs from his 3 overs. Murgatroyd chipped in with 2 wickets with Slater and Allan also claiming wickets. Congs keeper Barney Gibson also picked up 4 stumpings on the night to finish off what was a strong all round display.
Pudsey Congs 124 for 4
Bolton Villas 77 all out
Congs win by 47 runs and Progress in Cup
Pudsey Congs v Manningham Mills
Sunday June 7th, 2009
Congs played host to Manningham Mills this past Sunday. The game had a strange twist with the Manningham side being managed by Congs U13 Manager Abid Bashir. The first surprise of the day came when the away side had more than 8 players on the field. The second was to see Manningham open the bowling with two spinners. Wasim Bashir bowled a fantastic 4 over spell, giving little away and making scoring tough and picking up the wicket of Congs big hitter Ash Slater to leave the home side on 20 for 1.With Bazra and Robinson losing their wickets in quick succession, the lads looked in a bit of trouble on 21 for 3. It was Callum Murgatroyd who continued his run of good form with the bat making 34 before he was bowled by Rehman. Keegan Moodley made a solid 30 before he was run out. It was left to Tom Huffinley 11 not out and Saleem Qureshi 5 not out, to see out the innings with some good running to push the score to 110 for 5
The Congs bowlers again hit the ground running and were soon causing all kinds of problems for the away side. Stephen Robinson caused most of the damage bowling an aggressive 3 over spell which brought him 4 wickets for just 2 runs and leave the batting side on 8 for 4 after 5 overs. Bal Lally picked up were he left off last week bowling a wicket maiden from his first over. Saif Shahidi turned his arm over for the first time this year and did not have to wait to long before he picked up the wicket of Haroon Tariq. Lally finished his spell with fine figures of 4 overs 11 for 3 wickets Shahidi wrapped it up for Congs and also finished with great figures of 3 overs 10 for 3 wickets. Another solid performance by the lads means we can go into tomorrow nights cup clash with Bolton Villas full of confidence.
Pudsey Congs 110 for 5
Manningham Mills 69 all out
Congs win by 41 runs
Keighley v Pudsey Congs
Sunday May 31st, 2009
At last proper cricket weather and the chance to get back to winning ways against today’s opponents Keighley. On a baking hot morning we lost the toss and were asked to bat first by the Keighley skipper on a good looking wicket. A welcome return for Keegan Moodley after injury saw him open the batting with Barney Gibson. A steady start saw Congs move to 25 after 6 overs unfortunately Moodley retired injured after suffering a pulled muscle. Murgatroyd came to the crease and made 12 before being run out. Congs found it hard to up the run rate and by the 13th over were 57 for 1. Moodley came back to the crease with the aid of a runner and made 4 before he was bowled. Robinson made 9 before he suffered the same fate as Murgatroyd to leave the score on 79 for 3 with three overs to go. Wickets fell in the final exchanges of he game as the batting side tried to up the run rate. Jeevan Bazra ran well to help to side push on towards 100. After 20 overs the side made 97 for 5 with Barney Gibson making 50 not out.
With a modest total on the board it was important to get in to the Keighley batsmen early doors. Jamie Allan got the breakthrough in the second over to leave the home side on 7 for 1. Robinson picked up a wicket in his second over with some good pace bowling. All the Congs bowlers bowled well making scoring very difficult. Dale Spink and Callum Murgatroyd picked up 2 wickets a piece and gave nothing away. Jamie Allan finished his spell with 2 maidens 2 wickets for 4. Salim Qureshi picked up a wicket to leave the home side on 56 for 8. It was left to paceman Bal Lally to finish of the Keighley innings having Hussain caught by Matt Humpleby and bowling N Ali to finish with 2 wickets from 5 balls for 1 run.
Pudsey Congs v Bradford & Bingley
Sunday May 17th, 2009
Congs faced a tough test today in the shape of Bradford & Bingley who are unbeaten so far this season. The toss was lost and we were asked to bat by the away side. Progress was slow in the opening exchanges. Ash Slater was the only Congs batsmen who made a meaningful contribution with the bat scoring 29 from 33 balls. Jeevan Bazra made a useful 11 at the end of the innings to leave the home side on 91 for 6.
In contrast Bradford and Bingley batted with real intent, running well between the wickets and dispatching any loose bowling out of the park. Dropped catches did not help the cause as the away side cruised towards their target. Matt Topps 46 not out, supported by Dom Copsey who hit a massive 6 to seal the victory for the away side in 15.2 overs
On the day the team were outplayed in all departments by a very strong Bradford & Bingley side.
Great Horton Church v Pudsey Congs
Sunday May 10th, 2009
Looking to build on the solid start to the season, the team travelled to Great Horton Church. Congs won the toss and asked the home side to bat first on a damp looking wicket. Nathan Dalton and Stephen Robinson again bowled well and after 6 overs the home side were 21 without loss. The opening partnership made steady progress and picked up singles at every opportunity exploiting the lack of urgency from the Cong’s fielders. Tom Huffinley made the breakthrough trapping S Butt LBW to leave the home side on 49 for 1 after 11 overs. Jamie Allan entered the attack and made an immediate impression taking a wicket with his first ball. Huffinley completed his spell with figures of four overs, 1 maiden, 1 for 16. It was Allan who was the catalyst, completing his four over spell in style with figures of four overs, 1 maiden, 5 wickets for 8, a truly fantastic spell. A late flourish from the home side saw 21 added off the last 3 overs and leave them on 85 for 8. This was a good total in very difficult conditions with a slow outfield and persistent light rain.
The rain continued to fall and the conditions did not improve as Congs set about the run chase.Tight opening spells from the Horton pair made runs hard to find, having said that openers Barney Gibson and Matt Humpleby made their way to 25 before Matthew was run out for 6. Ash Slater joined Gibson at the crease and he made 1 before he was removed by a horrible ball that kept very low. After 10 overs the score stood at 32 for 2 and the run rate began to increase and the pressure started to build. Stephen Robinson struck the ball well but balls that would have normally raced for 4 held up in the wet outfield and made job in hand much harder. Good line and length bowling from Church saw Robinson bowled for 10 and leave the score on 47 for 3 after 13 overs. It was apparent by this stage that if we were going to win this game we had to start taking the singles and look to score off every ball. Nathan Dalton and Gibson stuck to the task and chipped away at the total. The pressure built but the scoreboard continued to tick over. After 17 overs the away side needed 18 to win from 18 balls. The Congs batters continued to take quick singles but despite some good shots could not find the boundary rope. The game was on a knife edge as we reached the last over of the game wanting 4 to win. The first two balls were dots and the atmosphere was tense to say the least. A single left us needing 3 from 3. Good running brought another single and the tension was at boiling point. The 5th ball of the over was a dot and the game went down to the wire. Gibson managed to work the ball but it only brought 1 and the game was a draw.
On reflection this was a great game of cricket by 2 teams who played the game how it should be played showing great sportsmanship and respect for each other.
Well done to all involved in this classic encounter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great Horton Church 85 for 8, Pudsey Congs 85 for 3
Jamie Allan 5 for 8
Barney Gibson 43 not out
Pudsey Congs v Pudsey St Lawrence
Sunday May 3rd, 2009
The first home game of the season was against local rivals Pudsey St Lawrence in what promised to be a tough encounter.
Congs lost the toss and were asked to bat on a fairly damp looking track that lacked any bounce or pace. The score moved on to 16 before Ash Slater spooned one up and was caught at point. Barney Gibson joined Saleem Qureshi at the crease and made 15 before he found a leading edge and was caught and bowled by Hodgson to leave the home side on 37 for 2 after 6 overs. Stephen Robinson and Qureshi kept the scoreboard ticking along nicely until a good four over spell from James Doidge put the brakes on the Congs batsmen. The Under 15’s eventually reached 108 for 2 from twenty overs with Qureshi 33 not out and Robinson unbeaten on 36.
Congs opening attack of Dalton and Robinson both bowled with good discipline and after their opening spell the score was 24 for 1 Ashley Slater continued the good work with the ball making runs hard to come by for the PSL batsmen. Slater finished with figures of 2 for 10 off his 4 overs.
Tom Huffinley joined the attack and bowled a tidy spell picking up the wicket of Conlon. When James Doidge was stumped by Gibson off the bowling of Qureshi, the away side looked in real trouble as the run rate increased. After 17 overs and with the score on 64 for 7, the game looked dead and buried, that was until Jeevajee made his way to the middle and started to dispatch everything to all parts of the ground. Despite this brilliant knock of 27 from 13 balls, PSL came up short with their innings ending on 96 for 8.
A fine all-round display from the lads ensured we picked up the points from this hard fought game.
Pudsey Congs 108 for 2, Pudsey St Lawrence 98 for 8
Congs win by 12 runs
Eldwick-Gilstead v Pudsey Congs (Season Opener)
Sunday April 26th, 2009
A bright fresh morning greeted the teams when we arrived at the picturesque ground of Eldwick & Gilstead. The home side lost the toss and were put in to bat by Congs skipper Ash Slater. The boy’s were soon into their stride and the wicket’s came thick and fast. Nathan Dalton opened his account having opener John Moxon caught behind with the score on 1. Stephen Robinson did not waste any time getting in on the act bowling John Sharp for 5. Dalton and Robinson both completed their spells with fine figures of 4 over’s 2 for 10 and 4 over’s 3 for 12, respectively. It did not get much better for the home side when Ash Slater had Ricky Mothersdale holed out with a good catch at mid off by Saif Shahidi. It was left to new signing, leg spinner Stuart Ward to complete the job, returning very impressive figures of 3 for 7 from 2.3 overs and leaving the home side on 38 all out.
Barney Gibson and Saleem Qureshi opened the batting for Pudsey. New signing Qureshi made 6 before he edged one to the Eldwick keeper with the score on 12. Tom Huffinley 7 not out joined Gibson 21 not out and the pair chased down the modest total to seal victory and finish the game in 8.3 overs. Congs have wintered well working hard in the nets and picked up were they left off last year. With a strong team sprit and a great attitude, the team looks forward to going one better this term.

Pudsey Congs v Undercliffe
Wednesday July 15th, 2009
Buoyant from last week’s narrow victory, the Congs hosted Undercliffe after a rain hit day down at the Britannia Ground in the knowledge that a win would guarantee them second place, however, having already previously lost to Undercliffe, they knew they could take nothing for granted and would have to play extremely well. Captain Chris Doey won the toss once more and elected to bowl first.Unfortunately there was no such great start from the Congs this week who were woeful in the field, all that needs to be said was dropped catches, miss fields and overthrows lead to Undercliffe being 75-1 after 10 overs and that is all the comment that will be made on that section of the game. However at the 10 over stage Congs suddenly became revitalised and realised they could actually field producing 2 run outs and a well taken stumping from wicket keeper Jack Murgatroyd. The Congs then began to bowl better also with chins held high with Shaan taking three wickets and Irfan taking 2 in 2 balls. This allowed the Congs to get their tails up as they bowled well restricting Undercliffe for 119-9 from 20 overs, a target much smaller than was feared at the half way stage.
Tom Huffinley 2-0-8-1, Shaan Rashid 4-0-30-3, Irfan Amjad 4-0-26-2
Congs set out in their run chase with high spirits knowing they had clawed the game back within their grasp and knowing that if they batted sensibly with the strength and depth they had they could chase down the Undercliffe total. Openers Theren and Irfan both batted well but were dismissed in the teens as were Shaan and Raheel and when captain Chris was dismissed for only 3, all hope looked lost for the Congs as they needed 50 from 5 overs. Ashley and Jack both batted well scoring at the required ten an over rate and as the Undercliffe field spread it appeared once more like the Congs would once again snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, however with 4 needed to win off the last ball, Ash was unfortunately dismissed for 20 meaning that Congs lost by a mere 3 runs. Much praise must be given to both Ash and Jack who were the only 2 Congs batsmen who tried to give impetus to the Congs innings to provide a realistic chance of chasing the total, an extremely good effort from you two with the bat, the other 9 must improve for next week with all 11 needed to improve with the ball and in the field to remain in second place.
Jack Murgatroyd 38* & Ashley Slater 20
Idle v Pudsey Congs
Wednesday July 8th, 2009
Congs travelled to Idle tonight for the third time of this year hoping do an impressive treble over their Bradford neighbours, however after how close the game became last time with Congs winning with only 2 balls left they would take no chances, captain Chris Doey won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Once more the Congs opening bowlers Chris Doey and Raheel Ahmed got the Congs off to an extremely good start leaving Idle 24-4 placing Congs firmly in the driving seat. However, the fielding standards and the bowling immediately fell apart and the Congs looked poor in the field and heads began to go down as Idle not only clawed a way back into the game but put themselves into command posting an extremely impressive 124-5 on a slow wicket with large boundaries, a serious team talk would be needed and was issued by the manager who had finally made his way back from Birmingham.
Irfan Amjad 4-0-25-2 , R. Ahmed 4-1-16-1, C. Doey 4-0-16-1
Congs regrouped at the half way stage of the game and a sense of belief returned, however, Raheel fell early and Jack was unfortunately run out due to a miscommunication over a tight single which left Congs reeling on 15-2. However, Irfan Amjad and Shaan Rashid soon began about restoring pride for the Congs with Irfan playing elegant and beautiful shots striking the ball to all parts of the ground whilst Shaan picked up easy singles to a widespread field. Shaan unfortunately fell LBW for 13 which brought captain fantastic, Chris Doey, to the middle who continued where Shaan had left off. Irfan continued and eventually retired leaving Congs requiring 30 from three overs along with a returned belief. Yet again a nail biting finished looked on the cards and that is exactly what happened. Congs required 15 from the last over with Congs starting emphatically with Ashley Slater bludgeoning a huge 6 over long on followed by a four to leave Congs requiring 5 from 4 balls. Dramatically however Ash fell the very next delivery bringing Tom Brook to the crease who immediately scampered a single to get the captain back on strike. With 4 required from 2 balls, Captain Chris Doey managed to squirt the ball down to third man with the ball slowly crossing the rope ending the game with yet another tight Congs victory which they had claimed from the jaws of defeat.
Irfan Amjad 51* & Chris Doey 23*
Thackley v Pudsey Congs
Wednesday July 1st, 2009
On a typical summer evening, a buoyant Pudsey Congs side travelled the short distance to Thackley hoping to capitalise on an opportunity to go two points clear of nearest rivals Undercliffe and Thornbury in the race for 2nd place. Pudsey Congs captain Chris Doey won the toss and elected to bat first on what appeared to be a green tinged wicket. Chris opted to bat further down the order today and so Congs opened the batting with Jack Murgatroyd and Theren Moodley. Both got off to good starts pressuring the Thackley opening bowlers and placing pressure on the fielders. Theren quickly raced to 33 before he was well caught on the boundary opting for one shot too many ending a very impressive stand of 79 off only 9.1 overs for the first wicket. Jack however, anchored the innings well before he was bowled for 39. In truth after a fantastic start no other Congs batsmen really made inroads into the Thackley attack and Congs meandered to 127-4 from 20 overs.
Murgatroyd 39 & T. Moodley 33
Congs took to the field in high spirits after that effort with the bat but knew they would have to both bowl and field well. Just as the week before they set off in a lightening fashion leaving Thackley 4-4 from 3.3 overs! This is much to the credit of the opening bowling pair of Chris and Raheel who bowled good tight lines at a pace which was just far too good for the Thackley batsman. At 10-6 the game was out of Thackley’s reach and so every bowler had a bowl with the pick of these being young Wasim Bashir who bowled an impressive 4-1-17-1 and was very unlucky not to have more wickets. Ever bowler bowled well and Thackley were eventually dismissed for a mere 54 with Congs claiming 2nd place in the league. This was a very good performance boys well played now lets see if we can do the triple over Idle.
Chris Doey 3-2-4-3, Raheel Ahmed 3.1-1-4-4, Wasim Bashir 4-1-17-2
Pudsey Congs v Thornbury
Wednesday June 24th, 2009
An almost full strength Congs XI (for a change), hosted Thornbury tonight hoping to bounce back from the defeat to Woodlands and build on their solid form in the league. Congs won the toss and elected to bowl first.
Congs set off to a blistering start with captain Chris Doey leading from the front bowling 2 superb overs for only 1 run and claiming three wickets. He was ably supported from the other end by Raheel Ahmed who bowled 2 overs for only one run but unfortunately was unlucky to not take any wickets. They pegged Thornbury onto the backfoot and allowed the Congs to bowl 8 bowlers! Ensuring that everybody had a fair opportunity in the team. All bowlers bowled well as expected and fielding was also good with pick of the other bowlers being Ashley Slater who took two wickets for only 15 runs from 4 overs meaning that from 20 overs Thronbury only reached 84.
Chris Doey 2-1-1-3, Raheel Ahmed 2-1-1-0, Ashley Slater 4-1-15-2, Irfan Amjad 4-1-6-1
In reply the Congs got off to an unsteady start losing Chris, Irfan, Jack Murgtroyd and Callum Murgatroyd cheaply. However, Raheel and Theren started the Congs fight back with a partnership of 30 in quick time. Raheel eventually departed for 18 in the extremely unlucky fashion of chopping onto his own stumps. Keegan quickly continued where he left off and Congs were soon back in the box seat. When he departed for 10, Theren upped his game once more and he began hitting endless boundaries allowing no bowlers to settle eventually ending up 49* hitting the winning runs with 4 overs to spare. This was an extremely good bowling performance but work needs to be done on the batting if we are to finish near the top of the table. A good result none the less though boys, keep going.
Theren Moodley 49*, Raheel Ahmed 18
Woodlands v Pudsey Congs
Cup Quarter Final
Monday June 22nd, 2009
An under strength Pudsey Congs eleven travelled through the pouring rain to reach Woodlands on a very cold and murky Monday night where; to their amazement, the rain had not been falling but the dark clouds looked ominous. Woodlands won the toss and elected to field first and take advantage of the good swing bowling conditions. Chris and Raheel opened the Congs innings hoping to put Congs into a commanding position from the early stages. However, just as Chris was about to face the first delivery the thunder and lightning begun and so the players were forced (reluctantly) from the field. Fortunately 30 minutes later the thunder ceased and so the Congs innings begun. Chris unfortunately perished early to a run out from the Woodlands captain but Raheel (49*) batted well throughout the innings steadying the pace and allowing others to bat round him. However, only Irfan (18) could provide able support for Raheel and when the rain came with 1.1 overs still to be bowled Congs were on 88-4 and play was abandoned for the evening.
Play resumed the very next evening with only Keegan unable to attend and so his innings was retired and Tom Brook was brought in as a substitute fielder. Congs finished their innings on 94-6 with no considerable impetus on the second day meaning they would have to bowl well to advance in the competition.
Ahmed 49*, I.Amjad 18
Congs started well against a very strong Woodlands batting order, dismissing the first team wicket keeper & number 1 batsman for a golden duck and fellow opener C. Jackson also for a duck. However, despite a fantastic start from Chris and Raheel this could not be followed up despite good lines being bowled the Congs bwlers were unable to make breakthroughs at crucial times and so Woodlands eventually reached their target with 2 overs to spare despite an extremely good effort from the Congs against a team who are favourites for the cup and had the better of the conditions. A top effort lads, well played.
Doey 3-0-12-2, C. Murgatroyd 3.4-0-2-16
Undercliffe v Pudsey Congs
Wednesday June 10th, 2009
On yet another bleak and miserable night which seems to becoming a feature of the under 17s season, a much stronger Congs side travelled the short distance to Undercliffe aiming to seek revenge for an early season defeat.
Captain Chris Doey lost the toss out in the drizzle and unsurprisingly Undercliffe elected to remain dry and bat first with the Congs looking forward to what seemed to look an extremely wet and cold 16 overs of play. However, Congs spirits were lifted in the first over when captain Chris Doey seeked revenge on the Undercliffe captain with a superb in swinging Yorker sending the bails flying to the boundary. This set the tone for the Congs bowling with Adam bowling his usual consistently tight lines and both Irfan and Raheel swinging the ball well and making the run scoring difficult over all despite having to bowl with a soaking wet ball. Chris as usual was the talisman of the attack bowling his four overs for only 14 runs and claiming 3 wickets in the process; a fantastic spell. Special credit, as usual has to be given to the Congs fielding and noise levels out in the field with an exceptionally high standard shown in tricky conditions which restricted Undercliffe to 102-4 from their 16 overs. The support for the bowlers and each other was as phenomenal as ever. Very impressive boys, keep it up.
Chris Doey 4-1-14-3, Adam Patrick 4-0-24-1
At the interval the game was abandoned to do persistent rain which showed no signs of stopping so both captains shook hands with the game being ruled as a draw despite an extremely unhappy and soaking wet Pudsey Congs team who seemed more than happy to allow Undercliffe to be placed in the same situation they had been, however, almost all involved were more than happy to go home and watch the England game which would prove a popular substitute for the game.
Pudsey Congs v Idle
Wednesday June 3rd, 2009
Another under strength Congs side but one buoyant after Monday’s emphatic victory, welcomed Idle down to the Britannia ground hoping to complete the double after the good win on the first day of the season. Captain Chris Doey won the toss and elected to field first. The Idle openers started steadily ensuring not to lose too many early wickets against a very strong Congs bowling line up on a good batting track. Congs however managed to limit the scoring extremely well on a very large ground meaning that when the first wicket fell after 12 overs, Idle had only reached 53. From here the Congs attack excelled with tight spells from Tom Huffinley and then a fantastic final two overs a piece from Adam Patrick and Chris Doey, where they took 6 wickets with Adam claiming four and Chris two, meaning the Congs limited Idle to 88-7 off 18 overs which should be easy… surely?
Adam Patrick 4-0-10-4 , Chris Doey 4-0-18-2 , Tom Huffinley 4-0-18-1
In a simple answer… no. Raheel perished in only the third ball of the innings and Chris falling for a mere 5 with Tom, Adam and Matty falling shortly after, meaning that at the half way stage Congs were 35-5! However, this brought together a great batting partnership between Tom and Callum who put on 51 for the 6th wicket, combining elegant stroke play and hard hitting pushing the field and making the Idle fielders work hard to defend the 88 run total which seemed more than enough for most of the Congs innings. When Callum finally fell in the 17th over for 32 going for what seemed one shot too many, the Congs required a mere 2 runs. Nathan then came to the crease and added to the tension by batting out 2 dot balls and taking the game to the final over. Tom gained a risky two from the first ball to draw the scores level when it looked certain he would be run out. This was followed by a dot ball where Nathan was run out trying to push Tom for a single which he rejected with the ball travelling straight to a fielder meaning Congs required a single from 4 balls with a tightly packed in field with Tom on strike 34 not out. Unfortunately the game ended on a no ball with the ball striking Tom on the elbow, a painful end to a great game meaning Congs reached their target with 4 balls remaining… easy.
Callum Murgatroyd 32 , Tom Brook 34 not out
Another fantastic game between the two sides who always seem to produce tight games. Well done once again to the juniors who played well once more but please, a little less closer next week when taking revenge on Undercliffe, please boys!!!!
Pudsey Congs v Daisy Hill & Crossroads
Cup Second Round
Monday June 1st, 2009
On a blisteringly warm Monday night, an extremely young under 17s side headed across Bradford to Daisy Hill and Crossroads to try and advance in the cup. With the Congs missing four or five players, tensions ran high prior to the game with many fresh and young faces making debuts.
Daisy Hill and Crossroads won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to field first. Chris was joined at the top of the order by Raheel due to the absence of Theren and the two immediately looked extremely composed at the crease scoring at a healthy rate, scoring over 60 for the loss of the first wicket which was an unfortunate run out from a misfield, meaning that Chris Doey had to go after scoring a skilful 34 and looking destined for 50. Raheel however carried on scoring runs which he knew his team desperately needed and by the time he had retired 50 not out, Congs looked destined for a large total. Irfan batted at three and picked up where the opening partnership had left off, running extremely well between the wickets and applying pressure in the field, he crafted a skilful 29 before being run out in the final over, meaning from their 18 overs the Congs reached 138-3, with much credit owed to Chris, Raheel and Irfan who took responsibility as the senior players, extremely well done.
Raheel Ahmed 50 not out , Chris Doey 34 , Irfan Amjad 29
This eased the pressure on the debutants who eased into the game and it quickly became apparent that this Congs team outclassed a below par Daisy Hill and Crossroads in almost all departments and so Chris decided that everybody would have a bowl. All bowlers bowled good and tight lines forcing the batsman to play and making them work for ever run. Irfan claimed 2 wickets from his 2 overs as did Matty Humpleby with Wasim, Raees, Callum and Adam also taking wickets leaving Daisy Hill and Crossroads all out for 74 from 16.2 overs.
Irfan Amjad 2-0-2- 2, Matty Humpleby 2-0-10-2
Much praise must be given to all who participated in this game. Congs remained professional at all times and looked the complete outfit batting skilfully, bowling good and tight lines and fielding fantastically. A special thanks to all the debutants who turned out and played well. Well done boys, hopefully we can put in another good performance in the quarter finals.
Pudsey Congs v Thackley
Wednesday May 27th, 2009
Thackley conceeded, Congs win
Pudsey Congs v Pudsey St Lawrence
Wednesday May 13th, 2009
This week Congs welcomed league and cup holders as well as this year’s league favourites, Pudsey St Lawrence down to the Britannia ground. Congs were without key players Tom, Joe and Adam and so Wasim Bashir, Dale Spink and Omar Mahmood stepped in.
It was another dark night with rain in the air and Chris won the toss and chose to bat first. Chris himself led the charge as ever with an impressive 42 whilst opening partner Theren once again batted well before perishing out in the deep. Against an impressive bowling attack including Bradford League first team bowlers Congs batted extremely well with Irfan also batting beautifully with another impressive 32 not out. Overall, Congs amassed 103-2 from their 16 overs. An extremely impressive achievement against the best bowling attack in the league.
The Congs set out in the field in high spirits once again with team spirit once again evident. Chris and Raheel both opened with fiery and aggressive spells, which left PSL behind the rate at the half way stage. However, the dismissal of opener Oli Beckett by the ever impressive Irfan brought Luke Duckett to the crease who immediately began to take charge of the Congs bowling attack along with opener Hans. In truth, Congs were a bowler short and missed the line, length and bounce generated by Adam. Unfortunately, the class of the two Bradford league 1st XI batsman showed and PSL reached their target with 3 overs to spare.
This was a very impressive performance from an under strength Congs team. The game was once again played in a fantastic spirit from the two rival teams and I very much look forward to the return leg when hopefully the Congs will be back to full strength.
Pudsey Congs v Keighley
Cup First Round
Monday May 11th, 2009
Keighley were unable to field a team tonight and by forfeit, the U17’s progress to the next round of the Cup Competition
Pudsey Congs v Undercliffe
Wednesday May 6th, 2009
A buoyant Congs side welcomed Undercliffe to the Britannia ground on what was another cold and windy night, which would restrict the game to another 16 overs affair.
Chris continued his great start to the season winning another toss and declaring to bat first once more. The Congs openers set out in high spirits after last week’s great team effort but unfortunately this week was not to be a repeat performance. On a slow wicket against a swinging ball, it soon became apparent that the Congs batsman had been watching far too much IPL and shot selection was quite poor with all of the top order quickly dismissed. Unfortunately, the wickets continued to tumble and the Congs ended up a dismal 47-10; a poor effort with the IPL seeming a very long way away for these batters.
However, team moral maintained constantly high throughout the innings. After a brief Barak Obama style inspirational speech from the coach, the Congs took to the field where there was a marked improvement from the first innings. Chris opened the bowling and set the tone for the innings dismissing the Undercliffe opener with the 3rd ball of the innings using pace and bounce. This set the tone for the innings with another quick wicket falling to the bowling of Chris who was more than ably supported by Adam and Irfan with another fantastic spell for Raheel who caused great trouble for the Undercliffe batsman. All bowlers were once again well supported in the field by great fielding with 2 sublime catches from Raheel, as well as fantastic noise levels from all involved. However, 47 was never going to be enough and Undercliffe reached their target with 3 overs and 8 wickets to spare.
Doey 2.3-0-10-2, R. Ahmed 4-1-10-0
This was a great fight back from the Congs who showed great spirit in the field and bowled fantastically well. However, the damage had been done in the batting and the focus for next week will be on building an innings rather than “bish, bash, bosh!”
Idle v Pudsey Congs (Season Opener)
Wednesday April 29th, 2009
The under 17’s season was back in full swing tonight and in true under 17 style the match was threatened by rain. However, fortunately the trip to Idle was not in vain but the match was shortened to sixteen overs a side.
New PCCC captain Chris Doey won the toss and elected to bat first to avoid the deteriorating light conditions. With a much changed side from last year the Congs made a positive start and dominated the early encounter scoring at almost seven an over in the opening stages. From here Theren stepped up emphatically smashing the ball to all areas of the park leaving the bowling attack stunned he reached his 50, only 8 overs into the game. Chris picked up the mantle and began the attack himself and holding the innings together. The Congs continued to push and amassed an impressive 117- 3 from their 16 overs; an extremely impressive total on a slow and low wicket.
Theren Moodley 55* Chris Doey 31*
The performance with the bat left the boys in extremely high spirits going into the Idle innings and opening bowlers Raheel and Adam picked up where Chris and Theren left of bowling tight lines and lengths giving very little to the batters. The required rate soon rose to almost 11 an over, an amount which proved way too much for the Idle batsman especially with tight spells from the support bowlers of Nathan, Chris, Tom and Saleem. The fielding was also immaculate with all catches held and a terrific team spirit and voice, the signs for the future are promising. From ball one the result tonight was never looked in doubt with Idle eventually reaching 68-5 from their 16 overs.
Raheel Ahmed 4-0-10-1, Adam Patrick 4-1-10-0, Chris Doey 2-0-10-1
This was a superb performance by all eleven men on the field and special thanks go to tonight’s debutants of Saleem Qureshi, Nathan Dalton and Tom Huffinley who will only get better with the experience. The team spirit tonight was exemplary with each player giving their all in the field. I am sure that if performances continue like this for the rest of the season we will be right up at the top of the table in the end.
Very well done and keep it up.
