U9’s Tournament – Idle CC
On Sunday September 5th, we attended a tournament at Idle cricket club. Due to illness, holidays and unavailability we arrived with only 6 players. Having gained permission from the tournament organiser for Harry Jackson to play, we started out with 7 players, having to borrow substitute fielders from each team we played. After beating Thackley, we then went on to beat Idle in a very close game, by only 5 runs. Our next game was a comfortable win against Baildon and we found ourselves in the final against Idle.
Bethany Slater had to leave early and was therefore unavailable for the final due to another commitment. We managed to drag Jack Allman away from his scoring duties to substitute field in the final having already borrowed a fielder from Idle. We expected a close game having only won our last encounter with them by only a few runs, however with our tight bowling and fielding we managed to restrict Idle to just 199 and won the game by over 60 runs. This was a fantastic achievement from everyone involved in the tournament. All the players contributed to what was a very entertaining afternoon of cricket.
Thanks have to go to Darren and Adam Slater for helping out with the scoring, also to Jack Allman for scoring and fielding. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all the U9 parents and grandparents for their support on this day and throughout the season.
Undercliffe v Pudsey Congs (Quarter Final)
at Undercliffe
Friday August 6th, 2010
Match report by Andre Stolarski
On a damp, grey and almost wintry evening, the boys travelled to the Intake Ground to commence battle with our old friends, Undercliffe in the Quarter final of the Gordon Bowers Under 9 cup.
Lewis Gunner was our captain and having won the toss elected to field first. The stand-in manager (me!) gave the lads a ‘nugget’ of advice before taking the field, he said ‘whoever bowled the least wides and lost the least wickets would win this game’. The first two overs went like a dream with Harry Allman bowling a maiden, and Joe Stolarski took a sharp return catch with his second ball to bowl a wicket maiden. Throughout the innings, the batsmen struggled with their shots and the runs dried up, but with the ‘odd wide’ creeping into almost every over, the score board ticked over. With the score on 221, the last Undercliffe pair of Raees and Sabbani entered the fray, to lock horns with the return of our opening bowlers, Joe and Harry. Sabbani set about the attack, and Raees scampered some quick runs, the total began to grow, and only a wicket from Harry, who bowled Raees and a run out by Jack Twyford on the last ball of the innings stopped the ‘Sabbani’ juggernaught, who finished with a brutal 25 runs in a partnership worth 40! Undercliffe ended with 261 for the loss of 3 wickets (including 29 wides!), a solid total, but one we thought we could challenge.
Our relible openers, Harry and Will Holmes started the innings pushing singles and striking the odd boundary, the scored board looked healthy, but with each of them losing their wickets, Undercliffe were still in the hunt. Lewis and Alex Naylor went in next and struggled to find any rhythm, Lewis being not out, but Alex trying to go over the top was out twice. The Congs’ began to get behind the run rate, next up was the ‘aggressive’ Frankie Gibson and the ‘watchful’ Jack. Frankie struck the ball nicely but on a big pitch couldn’t quite make the boundaries, that were beginning to become important. He ended with 7 and Jack 1, but he was also bowled once. It was left to Joe and Tom Brine, the last pair to try and emmulate the Undercliffe last pair and score 40 runs to pull off an unlikely win. It wasn’t for the want of trying, that Joe and Tom scampered runs, hit boundaries, and put the nervous fielders under pressure, but still the run rate grew. Then disaster, just as we were in with a ‘sniff’, a mix up caused both batters to be stood at the same end, ending in a run out! The game was sliding away, Joe was then bowled whilst trying to hit out, and we required an unlikely 30 off the last over! It wasn’t to be, the boys falling short by over 20 runs. A very disappointed, but gallant dressing room realised that bowling too many wides and losing too many wickets cost us dearly, but all the boys, those who will be back next year, and those who will be moving up to the Under 11’s can be very proud with themselves to top the table in the group, and reach this stage of the competition. Some, if not all of these boys will turn into fine cricketers!
My thanks to Mark Allman who stood in as umpire for me, as I sat on the sidelines in the scorebox.
Undercliffe 261 for 3 PCCC 237 for 7
Allman 1 – 16, Allman 11, Brine 11
Stolarski 1 – 25, Holmes 11, Stolarski 11
Pudsey Congs v Northowram
at the Britannia
Wednesday August 4th, 2010
Match report by Andre Stolarski
Following the Under 9’s progression for this year’s competition’s group stage, they entertained Northowram Fields from Halifax at the Britannia ground. On a cool evening, N. Fields won the toss and elected to field. Harry Allman opened up with Will Holmes and both immediately set about the opponents bowling. Both scoring boundaries, their opening partnership was worth 25 runs without loss, a solid start. Next up was Alex Naylor and Daniel Lock, both were very watchful, and concentrated on defence. Daniel was unfortunately bowled, but with a partnership of 5, parity remained. The third pair of Joe Stolarski and Frankie Gibson proved to be explosive, and potentially put the game beyond the opponents. Both striking boundaries, and running quick singles, putting the disciplined fielders under pressure, both scored 15 runs each, with Joe being a little unlucky, by being bowled by a ‘pea roller’! The final pair of Tom Brine and Jack Twyford both kept their wicket in a partnership of 10, keeping out the returning opening bowlers to post an impressive total for 259 for the loss of only 2 wickets. A quick mention to the fielding side, whose excellent ground fielding and straight bowling restricted our boys to a ‘gettable’ total.
The Congs’ opening bowlers of Harry and Joe proved both miserly and too accurate for the Fields opening batters, only going for 6 runs and taking a wicket each in the first 4 overs. On the back foot, the batters struggled against further accurate and probing bowling from Alex, whose best return of the season of 1 for 1 off his 2 overs, and Daniel only costing 5 off of his 2. Pressure continued with further straight stuff from Tom, Will and Frankie in the latter overs, making Fields dancing with the 200 staring mark throughout the innings. Joe and Harry bowled the final two overs, and Joe bowled a wicket maiden, and Harry topped it off with the last pair of Fields desperately trying to get late runs off of him, hitting it straight to Alex, who, on the last ball of the innings, threw down the wickets with a direct hit.
A comprehensive and impressive win by the boys who now meet Undercliffe (away) on Friday (6th) in the Quarter Finals.
PCCC – 259 for 2 wickets
Northowram Fields – 203 for 6
Gibson 15, Stolarski 15, Allman 12, Holmes 11
Stolarski 2 for 5, Naylor 1 for 1, Allman 1 for 4, Brine 1 for 5
Pudsey Congs v Gildersome
at the Britannia
Monday July 19th, 2010
Match report by Mark Jackson
On a dull, rainy evening we took on Gildersome for the 3rd time this season. Today’s captain was William Holmes and he won the toss and decided to bowl first. It was Harry Allman and Joe Stolarski who bowled the first 4 overs, with Joe taking the first wicket with a sharp catch from Harry from close in. Daniel Lock bowled his 2 overs well, with Alexander Naylor bowling at the other end and taking a wicket in his first over. When William Holmes and Tom Brine came on to bowl from their respective ends they were bowling against Josh Sturees who in his last innings against Congs made a very good 37. Tom and William pinned him back, restricting him to just 8 runs and although both bowlers were wicket less, they both bowled extremely well. Frankie Gibson bowled the last overs and bowled well, leaving Harry to bowl the last over of the match and what an eventful over, Harry taking 2 wickets in 2 balls, meaning the last ball of the Gildersome innings was a hat-trick ball. This rattled into the batsman’s pad, leaving Harry just missing out on a hat-trick. Harry soon heaved a huge sigh of relief when he was reminded by his manager that his hat-trick would have meant keeping the manager in beer for a week!!! The final score Gildersome 234-4.
It was William and Harry who opened the batting, both batsmen started off well, both scoring very quick runs and were almost run out taking risky singles, but managed to ride their luck with both finishing on 13 without loss. The partnership was worth 26. The next pair to bat were Daniel and Alexander. This partnership calmed things down a bit and went on the defensive, before Daniel square drove a ball for 4 runs, finishing the partnership on 8 without loss. Frankie and Joe were next in – both players continued the trend of frantic running between the wickets, each batting well but again taking risky singles, with Joe taking 1 too many and ended up being run out. Frankie lost his wicket, but the partnership was still worth 11. The last pair were Jack and Tom. Tom started well with a well struck 4 runs before Jack was out once.
Congs finishing on 267-3.
Yet again the Congs fielding was outstanding with Harry, Daniel and Frankie standing out. Well done to this young team and thanks to Andre Stolarski and Matthew Humpleby for their help as always.
East Bierley v Pudsey Congs
at East Bierley
Sunday July 11th, 2010
Match report by Mark Jackson
After one team dropped out of our group it was decided that we would have to play our last two opponents again, so off we went for our third encounter with East Bierley, finding a much changed and stronger team than our last 2 meetings.
Today’s captain was Alexander Naylor, he lost the toss and Congs were put in to bat. First in for the Congs were Tom Brine and Jack Twyford. Both found runs hard to come by on an artificial wicket and against some very accurate fast bowling from both ends. Both batsmen lost their wicket once. The next pair in were Alexander Naylor and the ever improving Lewis Gunner. Both players defended well before Alexander was out twice, once to a good delivery and the other an unlucky deflection. When Joe Stolarski and Frankie Gibson came to the wicket, Congs really needed the runs and Joe got off to a good start with some sharp singles. This partnership was worth 12, although Joe lost his wicket once. Harry Allman and William Holmes were the next pair to bat and this partnership refused to be dominated by some good tight bowling. Harry batting really well, scoring 18, backed up by William who scored 8, with no loss – so the partnership was worth 26, taking the final score to 245-5.
Harry and Joe opened the bowling without much luck and after 4 overs a wicket hadn’t gone down. Frankie was the next to bowl and he soon made a breakthrough when Harry (who was superb in the field all day) took a sharp catch at mid-wicket. Alexander bowled 1 over, then Frankie took his 2nd wicket, finishing with figures 2-0-11-2 and the fightback was on the cards. William came on to bowl and took 2 wickets, finishing with figures 3-0-7-2. Lewis bowled his over and bowled well. Tom Brine came on to bowl, he bowled 3 overs but couldn’t make the breakthrough. There was just time for a run out after Joe and Harry bowled the last 2 overs, yet again without much luck and East Bierley finished on 264-5.
Despite this defeat, this young side never gave up. Congratulations to East Bierley on a good performance and thanks again to Andre for all he has done so far.
Gildersome v Pudsey Congs
at Gildersome
Monday June 7th, 2010
Match report by Mark Jackson
Today we travelled to Gildersome for our 4th game in the Gordon Bowers competition. William Holmes was captain for today, he lost the toss and for the first time this season, the Congs batted first. Harry Allman and William Holmes opened the batting and got the team off to a great start with Harry hitting four consecutive boundaries and William backing up with some well taken singles. William lost his wicket once but still shared in a partnership of 23, with Harry finishing on 18. The next pair to bat were Alexander Naylor and Lewis Gunner who was making his long awaited debut tonight (because of the rain that had come down the previous day the wicket was unpredictable with most balls keeping low, but the odd ball popping up and taking off the surface of the wicket, making batting difficult). Both batsmen batted well, taking some good singles and both were not out at the end. Joe Stolarski and Frankie Gibson were the next pair to bat. This partnership was worth 8 without loss. Tom Brine and Jack Twyford were the last pair to bat, both finding the ball very difficult to get away but both finished not out at the end.
Congs finishing with 255-1.
It was Harry and Joe who opened the bowling, Harry starting with a maiden and Harry then took a wicket in his next over, clean bowling the Gildersome opener. Joe kept the runs down with his opening spell. William and Lewis were next to bowl and William finished his spell with two maidens with Lewis bowling well at the other end. Tom and Alexander were next in to bowl. Alexander starting with a maiden and Tom struggled a bit with his line in his first over but made up for it in the second. Alex then took two consecutive wickets and Tom almost had a hat-trick with the ball just spilling out of his hand unluckily, which would have given him his third wicket. When Frankie came on to bowl, the last pair were batting and Joe Sturees of Gildersome decided to put bat to ball, scoring 37 runs, unfortunately choosing Frankie’s bowling to score most of the runs from. To Frankie’s credit he kept going and never let his head drop and was a credit to himself for this. Despite the flurry of runs the Gildersome batsman was run out trying to retain the strike with a sharp piece of fielding from Tom Brine.
Joe and Harry bowled the last overs taking a wicket each with Harry finishing with 2 and Joe 1. Despite the late flurry it was another good victory for the Congs with Gildersome finishing 232-8. A big mention has to go to the Congs fielding with everyone working hard with outstanding contributions from Williams Holmes and Joe Stolarski in a game that had everything.
Big thanks to assistant manager Andre.
East Bierley v Pudsey Congs
at East Bierley
Friday May 28th, 2010
Match report by Mark Jackson
On a pleasant sunny evening we visited East Bierley, Tom Brine was today’s captain. He lost the toss and Pudsey were asked to field. Harry Allman and Joe Stolarski opened the bowling. Both bowled with real pace with Harry took a fine caught and bowled in a superb spell of bowling. Joe finally got the rewards he deserved with 2 wickets. Harry taking a further 2 wickets, Harry finishing on 3-1-6-3 and Joe 3-1-4-2. The openers took a risky single from an over-throw and ended up being run out with some sharp work from Frankie Gibson and Jack Twyford behind the stumps. Daniel Lock, William Holmes, Tom Brine, Frankie Gibson and Alexander Naylor all bowling 2 overs and all bowled extremely well. East Bierley finishing with 241-6.
Harry Allman and William Holmes opened the batting and got the team off to a good start without losing a wicket, with both batsman taking some sharp singles. Daniel Lock and Alexander Naylor were the next to bat, both batsman playing very defensive, protecting their wicket very well, and were both unbeaten at the end. Joe Stolarski and Frankie Gibson were the next pair in and both stamped their authority on the game with Joe making 14 runs backed up well by Frankie. Although he lost his wicket to a full pitched delivery, he recovered well, finishing with a partnership of 18. When Tom Brine and Jack Twyford came to the wicket, Pudsey were already in front. Both batsman batted sensibly taking singles, resisting the urge the hit the ball with Tom showing great maturity to take the score to 249-1. Yet another well deserved win for Pudsey.
Well done to all the boys for a fine team effort. Big thanks go to East Bierley who contributed to a very sporting game. Thanks again goes to Andre for his effort and constant support in taking this team forward.
Pudsey Congs v Gildersome
at the Britannia
Sunday May 9th, 2010
Match report by Mark Jackson
On what turned out to be a frantic weekend for the U9’s with 2 games in 3 days. Today’s visitors were Gildersome and Joe Stolarski was today’s captain. He won the toss and decided to field. It was Harry Allman who opened the bowling with William Holmes, both bowled well with both taking early wickets. Harry finishing with excellent figures 3-0-3-1 and William 3-0-7-1. Liam Holgate was making his debut after only joining the club last week and at the tender age of 6. He bowled his one over well. Daniel Lock, JackTwyford and Alexander Naylor all bowled 2 overs and bowled well. Joe Stolarski looked dangerous with his 3 overs and pinned back the Gildersome batsmen. Gildersome finishing on 236-2 (well done to Tom Brine who stood in as wicket keeper and kept excellently).
Harry Allman and William Holmes opened the batting and getting the team off to a great start, both not losing any wickets and the partnership was worth 13. The next pair in was Daniel Lock and Liam Holgate. Both defended well with Liam losing his wicket twice. Next pair to bat was Joe Stolarski and Alexander Naylor. Their innings got off to a bad start with Alexander being run out, but they soon recovered and batted well before Alexander was unlucky to lose his wicket with a deflection off his body onto the stumps. Last pair in was Jack Twyford and Tom Brine. Despite Jack being out twice, Tom kept his head and for the 2nd game in a row steered the team home with some well struck boundaries and solid defensive shots, finishing on 10 not out.
Another exciting finish with Pudsey finishing on 240-6. Well done once again to this very young team and thanks as always goes to assistant manager, Andre Stolarski for his constant commitment and support.
Pudsey Congs v East Bierley
at the Britannia
Friday May 7th, 2010
Match report by Mark Jackson
The U9’s season got underway on a cold but sunny night at the Britannia with 2 players Alexander Naylor and William Holmes making their debut. Today’s visitors were East Bierley, coached by ex Aston Villa and Bradford City footballer Ian Ormondroyd. Today’s captain was Harry Allman, who won the toss and decided to field. It was Harry who opened the bowling and bowled with real pace and was unlucky not to take a wicket, but was hard to get away. Tom Brine bowled well at the other end. Daniel Lock, William Holmes, Frankie Gibson and Joe Stolarski all bowled well and kept the runs down. The only East Bierley wicket to fall was from debutant Alexander Naylor who took a wicket in his first over, finishing with a wicket maiden. Harry Allman and Tom Brine bowled the last overs to restrict the score to 245-1. A good bowling and fielding effort from the Congs.
First pair in to bat were Harry Allman and Jack Twyford. Harry hit a very stylish 4 runs but as with the East Bierley innings, runs were hard to come by. Jack was unlucky and lost his wicket twice. Next pair in were Alexander Naylor and Daniel Lock. Both batted well and showed some very good defence, both keeping their wicket intact. Joe Stolarski and Frankie Gibson were the next pair and this partnership was worth 9. Both scored some very quick singles, putting pressure on the East Bierley fielders. Both kept their wickets intact. The last pair were Tom Brine and William Holmes. With 10 runs required, both batsmen ran well between the wickets and saw the team home for a good win in what was a very close game.
Congs finished with 248-2.
Well done to all the boys, this was a fine effort. Thanks to Perry Holmes for the scoring and to assistant manager Matthew Humpleby who umpired in his shorts on what was a very cold evening!!

Pudsey Congs v Liversedge
Cup Semi Final
Monday August 2nd, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
A large crowd gathered at the Britannia Ground on this overcast Monday evening. Liversedge won the toss and put Congs into bat. Opening the batting for Pudsey were Sam Baxter and Alex Holmes both finding runs hard to come by, Holmes being bowled early in the innings by Brandon Silverwood for 1. Jack Allman was next in and him and Baxter began to put a partnership together. Baxter fell to Henry Purdy after a superb catch by Hawkin. Next to the crease was Adam Slater. These two took the score along nicely before Jack Allman was out for 18. Adam continued to bat really well, arguably his best innings of the season at a vital time. He was clean bowled by Dhanger for 19. Josh Chapman then quickly followed for 5 (nice to see him back) and Matthew Farmer chipping in for 3 making the Congs finish on a total of 72 for 6. Not a very big score and it was going to be an uphill struggle.
Liversedge started their innings and the two openers were ticking along nicely until an Allman family double, Harry Allman the bowler and Jack Allman taking the catch behind the wickets, having to run 20 yards to catch it. The next one to go was Burnley for 11. By now the wicket keepers had swopped over and Adam Slater taking a superb catch off the bowling of Jack Allman. Purdy bolstered the innings continuing to pick the runs off before a superb catch by Jack Allman off the bowling by Josh Chapman for 26. The overs by now were ticking away and Brandon Silverwood was caught by Harry Jackson off the bowling of Jack Allman for 1. By now nerves were starting to creep in to the Liversedge batting and Wil Hawkin was run out for 7. Harry Hardcastle came in and he managed to squeeze a 4 to ease the pressure and with just 2 overs left the game was finished when a no ball was bowled.
It was felt that the Congs’ batting total was always a touch low but the boys put a fantastic fight up trying to defend it and one they can all be proud of.
Whilst they haven’t won anything this season, they have achieved a lot. They are a great bunch of lads and they have been a pleasure to coach. I look forward to coaching some of these next year.
Many thanks to Darren Slater and Mark Jackson for their continued help.
Idle v Pudsey Congs
Friday July 23rd, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
This game was to be played on a cloudy evening away at Idle in what was to be Congs’ last league game of the season. Congs won the toss and put Idle into bat. On a tricky wicket to bat on, the two Idle openers went back to the pavillion with 9 on the board for the loss of no wickets. The next pair came in and Harry Allman struck leaving the home side adding just 5 runs from this pair with the loss of 1 wicket. The next pair came in and they also struggled against some good bowling from Harry Jackson and Adam Slater. The last pair came in and Jonathan Robinson decided to attack the bowling, finishing with 21 runs but losing 2 wickets, leaving the home side on a final score of 231 which was a total which was within Congs’ reach.
Congs started their innings with the unfamiliar sight of Baxter & Holmes struggling against the bowling, both losing a wicket each and scoring only 9 runs. The middle order of Mathew Farmer and Harry Jackson, Ross Kettlewell and Harry Allman adding just 9 runs for the loss of 3 wickets left Congs struggling with the last pair coming in, needing 31 runs. This was to be a bridge too far for the last pair, Jack Allman scoring 9 for the loss of 1 wicket and Adam Slater scoring 4 for the loss of 1 wicket, leaving Pudsey on their lowest score of the season 202 for the loss of 7 wickets. A slightly disappointing end to the league season with the team losing only 3 times all season but hopefully with the semi final of the cup to come things can still look up for this talented side.
Thanks to Tracey Chapman for scoring and Mark Jackson for helping out with umpiring.
Undercliffe v Pudsey Congs
Sunday July 18th, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
A chilly overcast morning greeted these two top of the table sides at Undercliffe. Pudsey won the toss and put the home side in to bat and on a wet greasey wicket. Sam Baxter struck in the very first over, clean bowling Khan and starting the game with a wicket maiden. The opening pair for the home side were to be out once more adding 15 runs for the 1st wicket – Baxter striking both times. The next pair in for Undercliffe were out 3 times, Alex Holmes with 2 wickets and Ross Kettlewell chipping in with 1 to swing the game in favour of Congs. The third pair from Undercliffe came in adding just 1 run in their 4 overs against some tight bowling from Adam Slater, Matthew Farmer and Harry Jackson. The last pair in for Undercliffe added 17 runs in total without loss to make the score a more respectable 212 for 5.
Congs opened their innings and Baxter & Holmes got them off to a flier, Baxter scoring 17 runs including three 4’s. Unfortunately Alex Holmes was out to a good catch off the last ball of the 4 overs. The next pair in were Matthew Farmer and Harry Jackson. Both did really well and added 14 runs without loss. Next in were Ross Kettlewell and Harry Allman – they added 11 runs for the loss of 1 wicket with Harry hitting two 4’s. The last pair in for Pudsey Congs were Jack Allman and Adam Slater. Unfortunately Adam was unlucky and was out twice. Jack batted superbly scoring five 4’s for a total of 22, leaving Congs on 249 for 4. A quite comfortable win against a team who could have won the title. Now it goes down to the last game against Idle away. This game has been brought forward to Friday 23rd July! All supporters welcome – 6.15 start at Idle for a game that could hopefully win us the league!!
Many thanks as always to Mark Jackson and Darren Slater for their help.
Pudsey Congs v Bradford & Bingley
Sunday July 11th, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
Bradford & Bingley were todays visitors to the Britannia Ground, they won the toss and decided to have a bat. The usual double act of Sam Baxter and Alex Holmes opening the bowling and it was not long before wickets started to tumble. The opening pair scored two runs for the loss of 4 wickets due to some good bowling by our lads and some crazy running between the wickets. The next pair added 6 runs against some more tight bowling by Kettlewell and the ever improving bowling of Harry “Jacko” Jackson. In stepped the next pair for B&B and they added 8 for the loss of 1 wicket with Matty Farmer getting in on the act clean bowling Asshaukat. The last pair came in and added 9 with the loss of a wicket, Alex Holmes striking again to finish with figures of 3-0-3-2.
And so it was the home sides turn to bat and chasing a low score of 189 for 6, for a side bang in form, was to be a comfortable task. Baxter and Holmes opening the batting with Holmes losing a wicket but Baxter more than making up for it, batted superbly for a score of 25. Following them were Harry Jackson and Matty Farmer, these two adding ten to the total with some nice shots by Farmer. This brought in Matthew Stalley and Tom Brine. They didn’t add any runs to the total but just as important they didn’t lose any wickets. Bringing up the tailend for the Congs were Kettlewell and Slater and they added a superb 30 without loss scoring 10 and 20 respectively. Congs finishing with 297 for 1, a good effort by both sides – well done. Specials thanks once again to the scorers and Jacko’s dad for umpiring – cheers lads!!
Pudsey Congs v Idle
Cup Quarter Final
Wednesday July 7th, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
A large crowd gathered at the Britannia ground for this mid week Quarter Final clash between Congs and Saltaire. Congs won the toss and put Saltaire into bat. Sam Baxter struck early bowling Loney for 7. The next batsman in was Mamood who was keeping the scoreboard ticking along with P Booth before Kettlewell took the first of two vital catches, catching Booth off the bowling of Harry Jackson. Next in was Gopal who proceeded to take a big swing off a ball from Alex Holmes. Jack Allman running back to take a superb catch over his shoulder to spark wild celebrations amongst the Congs’ fielders. By now Congs were getting on top and Hussain joined his team mates in the Pavillion after being bowled by Harry Jackson. Harry Jackson finished with superb figues of 3 overs 2 maidens, 11 runs for 2 wickets. Adam Slater picked up the last wicket of Khan, clean bowling him for 11 to leave the visitors finishing on 90-7. All in all a pretty good effort by both sides.
Adam Slater was moved up the order to open the batting with Sam Baxter for the home side. These two started really well before Salter was bowled by Mamood for 7. Next in for Congs was Jack Allman. These two pushed the total along before Sam Baxter was run out calling for a risky single but scored a superb 23. Alexander Holmes was the next to the wicket and he stayed around for a while to assist Jack Allman who continued his consistent form retiring at 30 again. Ross Kettlewell was the next to the wicket and he kept the score board ticking over before falling to Hussain LBW for 11. Holmes was then bowled by Blake for 1 and was quickly followed by Harry Jackson who was clean bowled for 0. With wickets starting to tumble the players and the spectators were all getting nervous. With 2 overs to go and 4 runs needed, Matthew Stalley and Harry Allman kept calm and saw the Congs home with a winning four from Harry Allman whilst the rest of the team stood in a penalty shoot out style huddle! So Congs move into the semi final where they will play Liversedge at home on 2nd August. This was a fantastic effort from everybody in the side and long may it continue.
Many thanks as always to Mark Jackson and Darren Slater for their help.
Pudsey Congs v Idle
Sunday June 27th, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
On yet another lovely sunny morning at the Brit, Idle won the toss and put the home side into bat. Sam Baxter and Alex Holmes opened for the Congs and they batted well leaving the wicket with the score on 224 without loss. Next in for the home side were Harry Allman and Harry Jackson. Allman adding 8 runs to the total, unfortunately Harry Jackson losing a wicket to leave the score on 228 for 1. The next pair of Matt Farmer and Matt Stalley added five runs to the total but they too lost a wicket. Jack Allman and Ross Kettlewell were the last pair to the crease and they added a further 11 runs without loss, leaving the total on 248 for 2.
So Idle began their innings and against some hostile bowling, they managed to add 10 runs with the loss of one wicket with Harry Allman the wicket taker. The next pair in for Idle could only add another six and runs were now proving hard to come by the time the third pair came in. They lost a wicket with Matt Farmer’s first ball on his debut as a member of the Congs. The last pair came in and started to chip away at the total until Harry Allman struck again with Ross Kettlewell taking a superb catch off Harry’s bowling, leaving Idle on 242 for 3.
A good game all in all and once again thanks to the scorer Tom and to Mark Jackson for umpiring. Special mention goes to Matt Farmer for taking a wicket on his debut and fielding amazing, well done !!
Farsley v Pudsey Congs
Sunday June 20th, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
On a lovely sunny morning at Farsley, Congs won the toss and put Farsley into bat. Good tight bowling from the consistant Sam Baxter, assisted by Ross Kettlewell who kept the openers down to just 2 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. The next pair in for Farsley could only add another 4 runs for the loss of a wicket, the result of good bowling by Harry Jackson and Alex Holmes. By now the Farsley batsmen were struggling and the next pair added just 12 with Josh Chapman chipping in with a couple of wickets. Niall Rowlands on his debut, also bowling well. The last pair came in for Farsley adding another 13 to the total, making their score 193 for 7. The pick of the bowlers being, R Kettlewell finishing with 3-2-2-4 and J Chapman 3-0-4-2.
So Congs began their innings and some excellent shots by A Holmes assisted by Sam Baxter meant that the openers went back to the Pavilion with 19 on the board without loss. Next in were Ross Kettlewell and Josh Chapman and these 2 added another 17 without loss. Harry Jackson and Niall Rowlands kept the wickets in tact, adding 4 runs without loss. The last pair in with the game virtually sown up were Jack Allman and Adam Slater. Jack hitting 18 in a total of 25 leaving the visitors with a good score of 298, without loss. This is the 3rd time this season we have gone without losing a wicket – another good display boys – keep it up!
Thank you to Darren Slater for scoring and Mark Jackson for umpiring – it is really appreciated.
Also, since last week Josh Chapman has had an accident and broke his arm – we wish him a speedy recovery from all the team.
Pudsey Congs v Idle
Cup Second Round
Monday June 14th, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
Idle were the visitors on Monday night in a 2nd round cup tie in front of a large and boisterous home crowd. The home side lost the toss and Idle chose to bat. The two openers batted carefully for the first few overs against some tight bowling by Sam Baxter and R Kettlewell. Idle seemed to be struggling to get the ball away against the spin of Kettlewell and when Slater came on to bowl, his accurate leg spin promptly took a wicket followed by another wicket in his second over, to finish with fine figures of 3-1-12-2. Harry Allman was next to bowl and carried on his under nines form finishing with 3-2-1-0. Kettlwell got his usual wicket with Jack Allman taking the catch off his last over. Harry Jackson bowled well to get a wicket by clean bowling Smith with a well pitched up ball to leave Idle struggling. Pedley came in for Idle and some good batting saw him add 19 before a superb caught and bowled by Baxter. A special mention to Josh Chapman who bowled two good overs of spin, this despite bowling quick all season, well done Josh. This was another good fielding performance by the Congs to reduce a useful Idle side to 69 for 5 from their allotted 20 overs.
Pudsey started their innings slowly as Baxter and Holmes opened against some good idle bowling. This resulted in Baxter mistiming a shot to be caught in the covers for 2. Jack Allman was next in and he got off the mark with a 4 and continued to pick off the bad balls, scoring another four boundries and retiring in what was to prove a match winning innings. At the other end Alex Holmes batted solidly for 14 in an equally important innings. Adam Slater was to fall not long after Holmes to a superb catch in the covers by Evans. The match winning runs came from a wide, prompting celebrations amongst the Pudsey players who knew they had beaten a decent side. The next round will be tougher than this but with the team spirit that we have in this side who knows what might happen!!!!
Pudsey Congs v Bolton Villas
Sunday June 13th, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
A dryer morning than the previous week when the game was called off at Villas greeted these two teams at the Britannia Ground. Bolton won the toss and elected to bat. The two openers put on 11 runs without the loss of a wicket despite good bowling by Sam Baxter and Alex Holmes. The next two in were Stephenson and Goddare and they struggled to get the ball away against some tight Pudsey bowling, Kettlewell 3-0-4-1 and Josh Chapman 2-1-2-0 were the pick of the bowlers. In came the third pair and with the runs getting harder to come by, they managed to score two but were out twice, Jack Allman turning his arm over for figures of 2-1-1-1, ably assisted by Matt Stalley who conceded 1 run from his over. The pattern of the innings continued with the last pair adding 1 run for the loss of one wicket finishing on 190 for 5, a, excellent fielding display from the home side.
The home side opened their innings and Jack Allman and Alex Holmes put 13 on, unfortunateley losing a wicket just before the end of the four overs. Next in were R Kettlewell and M Stalley both batting well to add 11 runs without loss. H Jackson and J Chapman were in next and added 14 despite losing a wicket each. By the time Slater and Baxter arrived at the crease, the Congs were going well and Baxter pressed home a commanding win scoring 17 ably assisted by Slater on 11. So Pudsey Congs won this game by 76 runs finishing on 266 for 4. Well done everybody with special mention to Adam Slater who, due to Jack Allman having Taverners commitments, kept wicket and did it to a very good standard – well done Adam
Pudsey Congs v Farsley
Sunday May 23rd, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
On a scorching hot morning at the Britannia Ground, Jack Allman won the toss and put Farsley into bat. The two regular opening bowlers Alex Holmes and Sam Baxter started well with both of them picking up wickets and bowling very well, to leave Farsley on 185 after the first pair. The second pair came in and four more wickets were to fall with Ross Kettlewell taking two and Harry Jackson & Josh Chapman chipping in with one apiece. J Blackburn added a bit of respectability to the Farsley total at the end but another wicket from Kettlewell pegged the visitors back leaving them on 180 for 9. Kettlewell was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3-2-1-3
So in reply, Sam Baxter and Alex Holmes set about the task in a hurry with Sam scoring a fine 35 ably supported by Alex with 11. Alas the next two pairs came in adding only 8 runs between them for the loss of a wicket. Enter the last two of Jack Allman and Adam Slater. These two finished off the innings in their usual style putting 27 on for the last pair, Allman finishing with 23. Remarkably these two lost a wicket each and it was their first time out this season. Congs finishing on 277 for 5, a convincing win for us against a very spirited Farsley side. If we can start adding more runs in the middle of the innings, I feel that we will really be a side to be watched this year.
Well done to Robin and Jacko for scoring and umpiring respectively
Bradford & Bingley v Pudsey Congs
Sunday May 16th, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
Congs won the toss and put Bradford & Bingley into bat on a very cold morning more reminiscent of January than May. After some tight opening bowling by Holmes and Baxter, and some equally good shots by the home teams opening batters, the game was evenly balanced on 216 after the first pair. Enter Ross “Swanny” Kettlewell who with his accurate off spin turned the game Pudseys way taking two wickets in two balls and narrowly missing a hat trick (not sure about the Brett Lee celebration though). He was backed up well by Chapman, Leonard, Slater and Harry Jackson to leave the home side struggling on 204 for 7.
The Congs opened their innings and Sam Baxter made the most of the small boundries, playing some excellent shots scoring 28 ably supported by Alex Holmes who also struck a couple of superb boundries. Next in were Josh Chapman and Harry Jackson who batted excellently putting on 23 without loss, Chapman scoring 16. Following this pair were Liam Leonard and Ross Kettlewell who both played very well defensively without losing a wicket. By the time Jack Allman and Adam Slater came in, the game was pretty much in the bag. Allman finished the innings in style hitting 9 fours in a total of 38 ably assisted by the ever consistent Slater. Pudsey finishing with a massive score of 324 for 0. This was another good performance by the lads not losing a wicket for the third time already this season, well done lads. Many thanks to Tracey also for scoring and also Mark Jackson for umpiring in bitterly cold conditions.
Pudsey Congs v Pudsey St Lawrence
Sunday May 9th, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
It was a bitterly cold morning at the Pudsey Congs ground which greeted the second leg of the Pudsey derby. Jack Allman (Capt) won the toss and put PSL into bat. Josh Marsden got PSL off to a flier, scoring 18, ably assisted by H Emmett Lee and when the opening batsmen finished their 4 overs, they had scored 21 without loss. The next pair came in and Ross Kettlewell struck twice in 2 overs with Sam Baxter getting a wicket in his 1st over to give the home side hope! Some good bowling by Josh Chapman, Matthew Stalley and Harry Jackson was unfortunately not backed up with good fielding. A lightening fast out field enabled the away side to finish with a very good score of 256-3.
Congs opened their innings with Sam Baxter and Alex Holmes. Baxter playing some great shots but unfortunately had a rush of blood to two straight balls and was promptly bowled twice. Ross Kettlewell and Matthew Stalley were next in, they scored 7 runs between them but unfortunately were out once each. With the home side struggling Harry Jackson and Josh Chapman came in, these two batted superbly, scoring 14 runs without loss to put the home side back in the game. Josh Chapman batting especially well. Last pair in were Adam Slater and Jack Allman. These two tried very hard to chase the runs down but fell just 6 short of the away sides total.
For the 2nd week running these two teams put on a great game of cricket with very little to split between them. Congratulations to PSL and well deserved.
Baildon v Pudsey Congs
Cup First Round
Monday May 3rd, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
Pudsey Congs made the bank holiday trip to the lovely setting of Baildon Cricket Club, albeit sunny but very cold. Baildon won the toss and decided to bat. With the very first ball of the match, Sam Baxter of the Congs clean bowled Tom Halfyard. Baxter was abley supported at the other end by Alex Holmes, both giving little away. The wickets from then on were quite slow to come but they made scoring runs for Baildon difficult. Everybody throughout the team bowled very tight, Harry Allman’s final figures were 3-1-3-0. Josh Chapman only letting one run go in his 2 overs. The pick of the bowlers being Baxter taking 2 wickets and Kettlewell finishing with fine figures of 3-0-4-1. The home side finished their innings on 44-5.
Baxter and Holmes came out to the wicket for Congs hoping to knock the runs off quickly so all the spectators could get home for a mug of steaming hot cocoa! and they didn’t disappoint. With the excellent Sam Baxter scoring 31 before retiring, assisted by Alex Holmes 7 not out, meant a fine 10 wicket victory for last year’s runners up. This was another excellent performance in the field from everybody with plenty of encouraging signs for the rest of the season.
Pudsey St Lawrence v Pudsey Congs
Sunday May 2nd, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
It was a cold overcast morning which greeted these two local sides for the Pudsey derby, the first of three meetings in the League this year between these two sides. Congs won the toss and Jack Allman put the home side into bat. Good bowling by the two opening bowlers Alex Holmes and Harry Allman held the Lawrence openers to 15 runs from their 4 overs and they were out 3 times with H Allman striking twice and Holmes the other one, leaving the home spectators shell shocked. The next pair for PSL came in and also struggled to get going against some tight bowling from Ross Kettlewell, assisted by the much improved Adam Slater. Good overs were also recorded by Harry Jackson and the ever enthusiastic Matthew Stalley, meant PSL struggled through the rest of the innings to make the final total 230 for 4.
Pudsey Congs came out to bat and were instructed to keep the innings tight and that is just what they did against some good PSL bowling. Holmes and Kettlewell scoring 6 runs between them without loss. Harry Jackson, Tom Brine, Matthew Stalley and Harry Allman all kept their wickets in tact to set it up for a close finish. In came Adam Slater and Jack Allman to seal the deal. Slater kept his wicket in tact well at the other end, leaving it for Jack Allman to hit 4 boundaries in a total of 18 to seal a fine away win for the Congs, with a finishing total of 234 without the loss of any wickets.
Overall this was a splendid display, showing great team spirit – long may it continue!
Pudsey Congs v Undercliffe
Sunday April 25th, 2010
Match report By Mark Allman
The Under 11’s season started at the Britannia Ground on an overcast morning against Undercliffe. Pudsey Congs lost the toss and were put into bat. Two debutants came out to the crease to open the batting, Sam Baxter and Alexander Holmes. These two batted very solidly against some accurate Undercliffe bowling, scoring 13 runs for no wickets. Next in hoping to build on this score, were Ross Kettlewell and Harry Allman. They added 7 runs to the total, but unfortunately lost 2 wickets. Next pair in were Liam Leonard and Josh Chapman. Josh scored 9 runs and played some nice shots, unfortunately Liam was out twice to some good bowling. The last pair in for Pudsey Congs with a score on 198, were Adam Slater and the team captain, Jack Allman. Adam held his end up well for Jack Allman who preceeded to score runs all over the ground, hitting a fine 24 in a partnership that left the Congs total on 232 for the loss of 5 wickets.
Undercliffe started their innings against some hostile bowling from Sam Baxter and Alex Holmes. The openers batted their four overs managing not to lose a wicket and its hard to believe how they didn’t with the two Congs bowlers beating the bat on many an occasion. Ross Kettlewell came on next to bowl at the middle order and after a shaky start, took two quick wickets to put Pudsey back in the game. Josh Chapman bowled at the other end and managed to take a wicket as he bowled at a steady pace. With the last pair in, Congs needed wickets and towards the end the game ran away from Pudsey with Undercliffe finishing on 257. The game was certainly closer than the score line suggests but the match was enjoyed by a large crowd and the best team won on the day. Congratulations to Chris at Undercliffe and his young team.
Next up for the Pudsey Congs is an away trip next Sunday to Pudsey St Lawrence, 10.00 am start, come along and support the boys!

David Barstow Cup, Semi Final
Pudsey Congs v Farsley
Monday July 12th, 2010
For the second year running, Pudsey Congs found its thriving under 13’s team in the semi-final of the cup, and still in with a brilliant chance of winning the league. This time however, they hoped to go one step further by reaching the final by overcoming a very good Farsley team. Congs captain Mustafa Rafique won the toss and elected to bat first. As ever, the amazing fire power of Moshin Hussain got the Congs off to a fantastic start, making thirty of a mere 17 balls inside the first four overs. At the other end, the captain Mustafa also continued in his rich vein of form by once more retiring on thirty three. This was well supported by another good innings from Alex Goodchild scoring another 22 before Tom Colley chipped in once more with a well played 32 retired which left the Congs in a commanding position at the interval having only lost three wickets and amounting a massive 146 runs from their 20 overs, a fantastic team effort, well done lads.
Hussain 31* , M. Rafique 33*, T. Colley 32*, A. Goodchild 22.
The Congs still knew however, that in order to win, they would have to improve on their recent poor fielding performances and they started well, with Alex running out the Farsley opener to further the Congs ascendency. This was furthered in the field by three great stumpings from Moshin and a series of good catches by Sam Baxter, Danny Ahmed and Tom Colley. Congs backed this great fielding effort with more good bowling from all ten bowlers used, with wickets shared equally. Overall, a Congs victory never looked in doubt due to a fantastic team effort from all 11 players. Well done lads, keep this up all the way until the final and you are in with a great shout.
Baxter 2-0-5-2 , J. Allen 2-1-2-1
Pudsey Congs v Bradford & Bingley
Thursday July 8th, 2010
An under strength Congs outfit headed down to the Britannia ground to take on fellow league title contenders Bradford and Bingley, hoping to bounce back from last weeks disappointing result against Saltaire. It was Congs who won the toss and elected to bat first.
The captain Mustafa once more led from the front opening the batting with his new opening partner Tom Colley. The innings however did not start well for the home team, with both openers being run out for 11 and 5 respectively. Jacques Allen then fell for 0 leaving Congs 23-3. Luckily, Joe Baxter and Zahid Mahmood Put together a solid partnership before both unfortunately fell leaving Congs struggling once more before the innings eventually stuttered to 81-10 off 20 overs. Despite the disappointment of an unusually low score, much praise must be heaped upon the lower order and younger players for their efforts in insuring that Congs were at least in with a chance at the break, well done and well battled boys.
Rafique 11 , J. Baxter 9, Z. Mahmood 8.
With the ball however, the young Congs boys were as resilient as ever giving very little away with only 4 wides conceded in the innings. It was however an innings of missed opportunities in the field with 3 run out opportunities going begging and, because of this, unfortunately, the under par total was never enough against a team with the batting strength of Bradford and Bingley who reached the total of 82 with 1.3 overs remaining.
Mahmood 3-0-12-0 , T. Colley 3-1-4-1, D. Ahmed 2-0-8-1
This was a valiant effort from a largely under strength team. The effort put in by the boys was exemplary, let’s put the defeat behind us and move on the success in the cup on Monday! Good luck boys!
Pudsey Congs v Saltaire
Thursday July 1st, 2010
After last week’s spirited performance, Congs faced Saltaire, buoyant after a series of victories which had consolidated their place at the top of the table. This, however, would be a good contest as the two top teams in the league met to face each other.
Congs batted first and started brightly with good contributions from Mustafa (23), Jacques (26) and Alex (16) which looked as though it would lead Congs to more than a competitive score line. However, from then on in, the innings failed to gain momentum, leaving Congs searching for a partnership which was proved near impossible from a very good Saltaire bowling attack. A late flurry from Daniel Taylor abd Joe Baxter however made sure that honours would be even at the break with Congs posting a well and hard earned 106-7 from their 20 overs.
Rafique 23 , J. Allen 26, A. Goodchild 16.
Congs started well with the ball, bowling good and tight lines, not allowing the Saltaire batsman to score freely. This continued throughout the innings, with Congs sharing wickets and taking them at regular intervals in order to keep the match in the balance. It was Jacques who largely played Congs back into contention, taking a hat trick to reduce Saltaire to 56-5, giving Congs a real hope with 8 overs remaining! Unfortunately, as feared, Congs had left themselves 10 runs short and despite a good effort in the field, Saltaire reached their target 7 wickets down with 4 balls remaining. A very good effort lads, you should be proud of your efforts tonight.
Jacques Allen 3-0-11-3 (including hat trick)
Baildon v Pudsey Congs
Thursday June 24th, 2010
Congs travelled to Baildon during an unusual English heat wave, hoping to cement their place at the top of the league and looking to capitolise on having a full strength line up and having batsman in a rich vein of form. It was the Congs who won the toss and elected to bat first.
The usual pair of Arbaab and Moshin opened and, uncharacteristically, Arbaab fell early, scoring just three. Fortunately, Mustafa remained on form, supporting Moshin until they both reached thirty and retired. Alex also chipped in with vital runs, another good score of 17 for the number 5 who was starting to settle himself into the role of being a middle order batsman. Joe once more batted with skill and prowess, scoring his unbeaten thirty at almost a run a ball. Overall, this was a solid batting performance from the entire Congs batters who batted skilfully to create partnerships and manipulate the bowling on their way to scoring 132-5 from their 20 overs.
Hussain 30* , M. Rafique 31*, A. Goodchild 17, J. Baxter 30*
The Congs bowling was opened by the ever improving Danny Ahmed who showed great control at a young age, dismissing both opening batters at the age of 11, the future looks bright for this young quick bowler. He was ably supported from the ever impressive Daniel Taylor who bowled 2 successive wicket maidens, along with Zahid Mahmood who took another wicket maiden. The Congs took the opportunity to bowl all ten available bowlers who all bowled well and were ably supported in the field by some good catching and wicket keeping from Moshin who took three stumpings. Overall, this was a comprehensive victory from Congs who played the game in good spirits, well played boys, same again next week please!
Ahmed 2-0-5-2, D. Taylor 2-2-0-2, Z. Mahmood 2-1-1-2
David Bairstow Cup, Quarter Final
Bradford and Bingley v Pudsey Congs
Monday June 21st, 2010
Congs travelled across Bradford tonight to face Bradford and Bingley in the cup quarter final, hoping to exact revenge for their defeat by the same side in the semi-final’s last year, this promised to be a thrilling encounter between two very good under thirteen’s teams, and it didn’t fail to live up to its billing.
Mustafa won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision which proved correct with Congs getting off to a solid start thanks to the captain himself and a 31* retired from usual opener Arbaab Hussain. This was followed by two fine innings from Moshin Hussain (33*) and Jacques Allen (25), allowing the rest of the Congs batting order to hit out in the later stages of the innings meaning that they could post their highest score of the season so far 169-5. Very impressive effort boys, well done.
Hussain 31*, J. Allen 25, M. Hussain 33*
Buoyant from their fantastic effort with the bat, the Congs boys were determined to keep it up with the ball and in the field, and that is exactly what they achieved, bowling good and tight lines at a good pace. Wickets were shared evenly once more across the ten bowlers used which every bowler bowling economically with a good rhythm, allowing a good Bradford and Bingley team to be restricted to a mere 90, handing the Congs a comfortable victory. This was a brilliant performance boys, keep it up for the semi-finals and you are in with a brilliant chance.
Ahmed 2-0-6-1, R. Kettlewell 2-0-11-1, A. Hussain 2-0-9-1
Pudsey St Lawrence v Pudsey Congs
Thursday June 17th, 2010
Tonight the Congs made the trip to the ‘up-roaders’ in the league in the most anticipated league fixture of the calendar for both teams. Congs won the toss and, as ever, elected to bat first with devastating effect.
Moshin continued in his fine form at the top of the order, scoring a dazzling 32 retired from a mere 5 overs, Arbaab once more chipped in with able support scoring another 21 in relatively quick time at the top of the order to give the Congs a solid and stable start. This was then capitolised upon by the captain Mustafa who continued in his rich vein of form, scoring 25 at greater than a run a ball, which, brought Alex Goodchild to the crease who finished the innings in fine form with a dazzling 25 in a matter of minutes meaning that in 20 overs, the Congs had reached a massive 161-6. A very good effort boys, very well batted. A very good time and place to do it as well!
Hussain 32* , A. Hussain 21, M. Rafique 25, A. Goodchild 25
The Congs boys gained great confidence from their effort with the bat and continued their fine form with the ball and in the field. This was led by the ever impressive Mustafa Rafique who opened the bowling extremely well, opening with a maiden which was followed up with his next over only going for a single. Spin was equally impressive, led by Jacques who took another 3 wickets to place PSL well and truly on the back foot, only conceding 6 runs in his two overs. The pressure exerted by the Congs was relentless from all ten bowlers and a well deserved victory was finally gained when the last wicket fell, leaving PSL bowled out for a mere 66, an impressive and deeply satisfying victory.
Rafique 2-1-1-0 , J. Allen 2-0-6-3, Z. Mahmood 2-0-13-2
David Bairstow Cup, Round Two
Pudsey Congs v Great Horton Church
Thursday June 3rd, 2010
It was the turn of the cup to take centre stage tonight as Great Horton church to travel to Pudsey to face an in form Congs eleven who so far had promised great things. On the back of several good bowling performances recently, Congs won the toss and elected to bowl first.
The start made by the Congs bowlers was promising, with Arbaab and Tom dismissing both the openers with only 14 runs on the board. However, Great Horton were in a defiant mood a steadily began to build partnerships on a small Congs ground, beginning to mount pressure on the home side. Congs however, recovered well and began to regularly take wickets, restricting Great Horton to 132 when much more appeared on the cards. A very good recovery boys, well done.
Hussain 3-0-17-3 & T. Colley 2-0-13-1
The Congs knew they would have to be resilient with the bat, and, as ever, they delivered, wowing the supporters with exquisite stroke play. The top order excelled, with Moshin once more scoring a well timed 32*, closely followed by his opening partner Arbaab who soon followed on the same score. The momentum of the innings was continued by Mustafa who scored a blistering a quick time 23, allowing Congs to keep up with the required run rate. However, when he fell for 23 there was still much work to be done by the incoming pair of Zahid and Joe. Congs still required 12 from the last 2 overs but 2 boundaries from Zahid saw that Congs reached their target which 4 balls to spare with 9 wickets in hand. A fantastic batting performance boys under pressure, keep this up and you will go far.
Hussain 32*, A. Hussain 32*, M. Rafique 23, Z. Mahmood 15*
Pudsey Congs v Keighley
Thursday May 27th, 2010
Keighley travelled to the Britannia Ground tonight to face an in form Congs team in search of another victory. It was the Congs team that won the toss and elected to bat first.
Moshin and Arbaab opened once more for the Congs and set the tone for the innings as usual. Moshin once more raced to 30, retiring on an unbeaten 34 in only 6 overs. Arbaab and Mustafa soon followed suit, retiring on 31* and 32* respectively through forceful shot play and manipulation of the field. This momentum was continued throughout as the middle order also chipped in with Joe and Zahid sharing a thirty run stand across four overs which led the Congs to an impressive 161-3 after 20 overs.
Hussain 34* , A. Hussain 31*, M. Rafique 32*, J. Baxter 18.
The two Pudsey Congs debuatants opened the bowling, with both Abass Akbar and Daniel Taylor posting impressive performances, taking 4 wickets between them in the opening 4 overs. This was followed by a constant stream of wickets taken at regular intervals from a potent Congs bowling attack who were relentless with pressure. All ten available bowlers bowled their allocated 2 overs, with the final wicket falling on the final ball of the innings to give the Congs a well deserved victory, bowling Keighley out for 72.
A kbar 2-0-2-3, D. Taylor 2-1-1-1, S. Baxter 2-1-2-1
Bradford & Bingley v Pudsey Congs
Thursday May 13th, 2010
Congs travelled across Bradford tonight in a visit to current joint league leaders Bradford and Bingley, in a match which promised thrills and excitement from the very outset. The Congs were in high hopes due to their unbeaten status, and they were asked to bowl first.
Congs started promisingly, restricting Bradford and Bingley to 22-3 from their opening 6 overs. However, Bradford and Bingley clawed their way back into the game through guile and determination, steadily building partnerships as they refused to budge from their league position. Arbaab however ended this resistance with a destructive spell towards the end of the innings, taken 3 wickets in as many overs and only conceding 3 runs to place the Congs firmly in the ascendency before Alex and Jacques took a wicket each to end the innings on 99 from 20 overs.
Mahmood 2-0-8-1 & A. Hussain 3-0-3-3
With the bat, the Congs always looked in control, especially with their confidence bolstered by an opening stand of almost 60 between Moshin and Arbaab before Moshin was bowled for 26 (the only time he has been dismissed this season!) Arbaab continued in his search for runs, securing another 30 with an unbeaten 31*. Mustafa fell shortly fter for 3 but, the game was concluded with a sparkling run a ball 11* from Joe Baxter who ensured that the points would be returning to the Britannia with the still unbeaten Congs.
Hussain 26 & A. Hussain 31*
David Bairstow Cup, Round One
Pudsey Congs v Woodlands
Monday May 10th, 2010
On what can only be described as a miserable and cold night in Pudsey, a strong Woodlands team came down to the Britannia in order to compete in the first round of the David Bairstow Cup. The Congs made the semi-final stage last year and a new, young Congs side looked to go two better this year and bring the trophy home. The game promised to be a thriller between two strong teams, and, as the game progressed, it was clear that the fans would not be disappointed.
Young Danny Ahmed opened the bowling for the Congs and immediately staked a claim for a regular place as an opening bowler, clean bowling the Yorkshire under 13’s and Woodlands opening batsman for 0 (a batter who had retired 30* in all of his last 7 games!) There was further good news for the Congs when Danny’s bowling partner Zahid also took an early wicket, getting the Congs off to an ideal start. However, despite this early joy, the Congs were unable to take wickets but managed to control the Woodlands run rate, restricting them to a manageable 96-4 from 18 overs with all eight Congs outfield players bowling well with good tight lines and lengths, credit is given to all who bowled and fielded their hearts out. A special mention must also go to Joe Baxter who continued his good work behind the stumps, not only cementing his place behind the stumps for the under 13’s but establishing himself as a contender for the end of season league keeping award.
Ahmed 3-0-8-1 , Z. Mahmood 3-0-7-1
The Congs run chase was solid, the good work by the opening pair of Moshin and Arbaab on Thursday continued from Thursday, culminating in another impressive 44 run opening partnership. Both unfortunately fell soon after, with Moshin retiring after an impressive unbeaten 33*and Arbaab being impressively bowled for 12; in truth, he deserved more after such a fine effort. This brought Joe Baxter and Zahid to the crease, looking to continue the good work of the openers. They achieved exactly this, rising to the occasion impressively to steady the run rate and edge Congs closer to the target. When Joe fell after scoring 8 (again deserving more for the effort and skill on show), Alex Goodchild (12*) finished the game off with an unbroken 18 run partnership with Zahid, seeing the Congs home with an over and half to spare.
Moshin Hussain 33* , Arbaab Mahmood 13 , Alex Goodchild 12* , Joe Baxter 8.
This was a fantastic display from the Congs who deserve nothing less than what they got from this game. The pride and belief as well as the obvious skill on show was apparent to all who were braving the cold to support the team. Keep going like this and retaining the league and going one better than last year to win the cup looks a serious option.
Very well done!
Pudsey Congs v Baildon
Thursday May 6th, 2010
After the disappointment of last week’s rained off game at Saltaire, another young Pudsey Congs side turned up to start the season at home against Baildon on a very cold and dark night. New Captain Mustafa won the toss and elected to bowl. In truth, the Congs could not have wished to have a better start to the season with Moshin starting in a fiery manner bowling both quickly and accurately starting with a maiden. This however, was soon to be followed by a moment of brilliance by young Zahid who spun his way to a hat-trick in his very first over of the season due to other moments of brilliance with a superb stumping by new wicket keeper Joe Baxter and a brilliant one handed catch by the new captain. This was followed by fantastic spells by Tom Colley and Mustafa, who bowled good, tight lines and continuing to take wickets at regular spells. Proof of the strength of the Congs bowling attack came from the fact that by the time the final wicket fell; only 13 runs had been scored off the bat. However, for the cup on Monday, Congs will be looking to cut down on the 12 wides conceded.
Zahid Mahmood 2-1-2-3 , Tom Colley 3-1-7-2 , Mustafa Ahmed 2-1-5-2
Unsurprisingly, the Congs were never troubled with the bat, with the opening pair of Moshin and Ahbaab knocking off the target after only 3.3 overs without losing a wicket. Both looked impressive in the stand and were rarely troubled as they played well against good bowlers, coupling impressive stroke play and good running.
Moshin Hussain 20* and Arbaab Hussain 5*
High praise has to be given to all that turned out to play tonight who all had an equal part, especially those who were as young as 10! I am sure that with the talent that was on display tonight, they will all play a starring role at some point in the season. A convincing win boys, let’s take that form into the cup on Monday.

Pudsey Congs v Louth CC (Friendly)
Tuesday July 27th, 2010
Match report by Neil Humpleby
A chance phone call to Mark Gibson from the Louth Manager resulted in a friendly fixture played at the Britannia Ground on a warm July day. The game was one of three of a short tour for the Louth team.
It was decided the match would consist of 45 overs per side. Skipper Keegan Moodley elected to bat first on a drying track. Openers Keegan and Ash strode to the middle full of confidence but it was to be the Louth opening bowler M.Honman who made the first breakthrough having Keegan caught off the last ball of the first over with the score on 1. Ash & Calum set about rebuilding the innings with both boys looking to play some attacking shots. A fine partnership of 58 was broken when Ash was bowled for 27 by J.Croney. Matty was the next man in carrying on where Ash had left off with a partnership 32 with Calum who fell to a catch after making 42. Matty had taken his personal score onto 28 before being bowled by J.Sanders with the total on 116. Valuable contributions from Tom (29) & Mark (24) with a nice cameo of 11 from Jamie, saw the Congs total climb to 196 all out after 38 overs.
C.Murgatroyd 42, T.Huffinley 29, M.Humpleby 28, A.Slater 27, M.Ferguson 24
In reply, the Louth innings got off to a flying start. The opening pair of J.Croney & W.Brader crashing 21 runs off the first 2 overs. An early change to the attack saw Ash take the wicket of Croney with the first ball of his spell with the score on 27. This first wicket calmed things down and with only resistance from skipper Jake Sanders (40), the Louth innings ended after 28.1 overs with the visitors bowled all out for 112.
C.Murgatroyd 6.3.18.3, A.Slater 6.3.15.2, D.Spink 2.1.1.2, T.Huffinley 6.0.30.1, N.Dalton 5.0.28.0
J.Sanders 40, W.Brader 18
A really enjoyable game played in good spirit. Thanks to John Malpass for preparing the pitch, to Danny for scoring, Sue for the catering & to all the people who gave up their time to help out or come along to spectate.
Bolton Villas v Pudsey Congs
Sunday July 25th, 2010
Match report by Neil Humpleby
An understrength Congs side, looking to overcome the disappointment of last weeks defeat, arrived at Bolton Villas on a breezy overcast morning. Stand in captain Nathan Dalton put the home side into bat on a dry wicket. Nathan & Tom opened the bowling getting us off to a great start with two wicket maidens for Nathan first up & Tom taking the third Villas wicket with only 15 runs on the board. At the end of these fine spells the home side were reduced to 22 for 3 off 8 overs. With the forced bowling changes Villas got themselves back into the game helped by a good knock from Aaron Levi of 39 & some wayward bowling from ourselves ending their innings on a creditable 109 for 6 off 20 overs.
N.Dalton 4 overs 2 for 13, T.Huffinley 4 overs 1 for 6, K.Khan 2 overs 2 for 8
With the usual top three batsmen missing from the lineup it was left to Nathan & Matty Humpleby to open the innings. Both batsmen settled well into the role of openers, adding 39 runs for the first wicket before Matty was bowled for 14 by Jordan Towers. Tom joined Nathan at the crease and after a nervy start, began finding the gaps & with good running between the wickets helped us reduce the run rate before Nathan retired on 52 not out. Dale came in & worked hard with Tom to get us to within touching distance before being caught in the covers. When Irjalaan was bowled by Jack Melrose, Mark went into bat with only 5 runs required and it was down to Tom to finish the innings with a fine boundary.
N.Dalton 52 not out, T.Huffinley 30 not out, M.Humpleby 14
CONGS WIN BY 7 WICKETS
Pudsey Congs v Pudsey St Lawrence
Sunday July 18th, 2010
Match report by Mark Gibson
Pudsey U15 suffered a major set back to there title aspirations at the hands of Pudsey St Lawrence this week. After a good look at the pitch and winning the toss, Congs felt that batting could be tricky on a damp wicket and very overcast conditions and asked the away side to bat. Things started well with the wicket of Jordon Moore falling in the first over, caught and bowled by Nathan Dalton. Ball Lally bowled a tidy 3 over spell giving nothing away, with Dalton at the other end finishing his 4 over spell with figures of 4 over’s 1 maiden 13 for 1, it was a start Congs were looking for. Ashley Slater made the breakthrough, trapping Matty Beckett 17 LBW to leave the score on 45 for 2 after 10 over’s. Lawrence opener Parrot continued to work hard and build an innings with some well timed shots and powerful stroke play, eventually making 50 before he retired. James Conlon made 11 before he was caught behind off the bowling of Murgatroyd. The last 5 overs saw wickets fall at regular intervals with Moodley and Tom Huffinley in particular bowling well at the death, Tom taking 2 wickets for 5 runs in the last over to leave the away side on 117 after 20 overs.
Congs suffered the same fate as Lawrence, losing in form Moodley in the very first over after he went after a short ball from Moore. Slater and Murgatroyd set about re building the innings, with Slater looking like he was yet again going to make another big score. The introduction of spinner Josh Smith soon put the brakes on the Congs innings. In a great 4 over spell, Smith accounted for the wicket of Slater and Nathan Dalton and went for just 9 runs. Gibson was caught behind gloving a short ball from Parrot to leave Congs struggling on 56 for 4 after 14 overs. With 6 overs remaining the rate had climbed to over 10 an over. Wickets fell as Congs pushed hard for every run with 5 batsmen being run out. Matty Humpleby made a valiant effort making 18 before he suffered the same fate as 4 of his team mates. The last over saw us needing 18 to win the game. Congs made 3 from the last over and finish on 103 all out. This result is a major setback, with just 3 games remaining Congs must continue to work hard and win their remaining fixtures to have any chance of been crowned champions this season.
Pudsey St Lawrence 117 for 7
Pudsey Congs 103 all out
Pudsey St Lawrence win by 14 runs
Undercliffe v Pudsey Congs
Sunday June 11th, 2010
Match report by Mark Gibson
Pudsey travelled to third place Undercliffe for a match that was never going to be easy. Undercliffe won the toss and decided to bat on what appeared to be a good looking wicket. Bal Lally made the early breakthrough in the second over having Saraj Hussain put one up in the air, Tom Huffinley made good ground from point to take the catch. Dalton bowled well in his first 2 over spell, giving little away. Lally and Ash Slater also bowled, good economical and accurate spells with Lally picking up a wicket for 10 runs from his 3 overs, Slater went for just 8 from his 4 overs. By the half way point Undercliffe had made just 37. Newman Rawad and Adam Shabir took full advantage of some poor bowling in the middle part of the innings putting on over 60 before Shabir 39 was run out with some smart work by Moodley. The Skipper was in the action again picking up the wicket of Rawad, bowling him on 43 to leave the home side on 107 for 2. Nathan Dalton returned at the death, completing his 4 overs and leave Undercliffe on 116 from 20 overs.
Despite Congs recording some huge scores in recent weeks it was definitely game on. Moodley and Slater made steady progress pushing singles and picking up the odd boundary. At the halfway mark the openers had moved the score on to 59 and were well on course for victory. It was Moodley who was the more aggressive of the two reaching his 50 from 35 balls in an innings that lasted 46 mins. Ten minutes later Slater completed his very un- Slater like half century with a very well measured innings. It was left to Barney Gibson 11 not out and Nathan Dalton 4 not out to finish the game, passing the Undercliffe score with 3 overs to spare.
K Moodley 50 not out, A Slater 51 not out
The stage is now set for next weeks clash against against Pudsey St Lawrence, a game that will surly have a bearing on who will be crowned league champions this season.
Undercliffe 116 for 3
Pudsey Congs 119 for 0
Congs win by 10 wickets
Pudsey Congs v Farsley
Sunday July 4th, 2010
Match report by Mark Gibson
After winning the toss it was business as usual for the Congs opening batsman as the runs flowed freely with Keegan Moodley helping himself to yet another half century before he retired . With Ashley Slater not available this week, Callum Murgatroyd opened the batting with Moodley and he also played well making 50 from 39 balls. Tom Huffinley made 19 before he was stumped of the bowling of Chad Morris. Nathan Dalton opened his shoulders in the closing overs of the innings and smashed 35 from 18 balls before he was bowled by Ross Booth. The run fest ended with Congs making a massive 177 for 3 from 20 overs.
Things did not start so well for Farsley when they lost the wicket of James Farrer off the bowling of Dalton in the first over. Dalton bagged his second in the third over with the score on 13. Farsley scrapped but found it hard to score against some good bowling. Dale Spink picked up a couple of wickets from his 2 over spell with good catches from Moodley and Gibson. Irjalaan Ahmed removed Chad Morris without troubling the scorer to leave the visitors in real trouble on 34 for 5 after 11 overs. A rare appearance with the ball saw Barney Gibson pick up a wicket from a 2 over spell. James Hoyland made 8 before he was bowled by Tom Huffinley. Farsley struggled and finally made their way to 58 for 7 from 20 overs.
Congs 177 for 3 – Keegan Moodley 51 no, Callum Murgatroyd 50 no, Nathan Dalton 35
Farsley 58 for 7
Congs win by 119 runs
Idle v Pudsey Congs
Sunday June 27th, 2010
Match report by Mark Gibson
More glorious sunshine and a fair sized crowd greeted us for the away fixture against Idle. Skipper Moodley won the toss and not surprisingly elected to bat. Congs opening pair of Moodley and Slater were full of confidence after both had recorded fine scores with the bat the day before, Moodley making 77 and Ash Slater making a brilliant 105 not out. The pair continued were they had left off the day before with the skipper playing some beautiful strokes in another fine innings that included 9 fours and a six to take him to his 50 in just 29 balls. Slater also made his way to 50 with some well timed, great cricket shots including 8 fours from forty balls, a truly great weekend for both players. With a solid foundation laid Callum Murgatroyd and Dale Spink continued to keep the scoreboard moving along with a mixture of good running and some good stroke play. Callum made 26 before he holed out in the 17th trying to force the pace. Spink made 22 not out and along with Matt Humpleby 8 not out, helped the team post 164 for 1, Congs best score with the bat so far this season.
This was always going to be a tough total to chase down for a young Idle team. Nathan Dalton once again made life difficult for the openers, bowling with good pace and finding good bounce and carry from the wicket. He finished his four over spell picking up a wicket for 12 runs. Bal Lally did some damage picking up 3 wickets in his 3 over spell to leave the home side on 55 for 4 after 10 overs. Tom Huffinley was rewarded for his efforts picking up the wicket of James Massider, caught Irjalaan Ahmed. Idle did show some resistance with Daniel Marshall making 34 before he was run out. By the end of the innings, the home side had reached 95 for 6, a fine effort from such a young side.
Another convincing win keeps the season on track and confidence high for a very important stage of the season to come.
Congs 164 for 1 – Keegan Moodley 50 no & Ashley Slater 50 no
Idle 95 for 6 – Ball Lally 3 for 20
Congs win by 9 wickets
Pudsey Congs v Bolton Villas
Sunday June 20th, 2010
Match report by Mark Gibson
After losing the toss Congs were asked to bowl first by Villas skipper on what appeared to be a green looking wicket. Jamie Allan and Ash Slater opened the bowling and after the pairs 8 over spell the away side had made 19. Callum Murgatroyd was introduced in to the attack and made an immediate impact bowling Joe Clough in his first over. The 10th over saw Irjalaan Ahmed take the ball, his first ball brought him the wicket of Jordan Robinson with another smart catch at extra cover from Tom Huffinley. The second ball saw Tom Melrose clean bowled leaving Ahmed on a hat trick. The sound of “vuvuzelas” rang out as Ahmed ran in and delivered the ball that gave him his hat trick bowling Jordan Towers. Villa were reeling on 23 for 4 after 10 overs. Keegan Moodley and Ishmail Akbar picked up a wicket a piece to add to the misery of the visitors. But it was the rampaging Ahmed who continued his one man demolition job picking up a further 3 wickets leaving him with figures of 3 overs 2 maidens 2 for 6 a truly fantastic effort. Villas innings finished inside 15 overs on 33 all out.
Ishmail Ahmed and Jamie Allan opened the batting with “Ishy” making 7 before he fell to a good catch to leave Congs on 11 for 1. As Ashley Slater made his way to the middle the question was how much longer would the game last. We did not have to wait long to find out as Slater blasted 18 from 8 to finish the game in 4.3 overs. A very one sided affair leaves Congs with points in the bag and their title challenge gathering real momentum.
Bolton Villas 33 all out
Pudsey Congs 35 for 1 – Irjalaan Ahmed 2 for 6 including Hat Trick.
Pudsey St Lawrence v Pudsey Congs
Sunday June 13th, 2010
Match report by Mark Gibson
As far as big games go this was as big as they come . The clash with PSL was a must win game if the U15s were to make a series challenge for the league title this term. Batting first Congs made steady progress in the early stages of the game despite losing the wicket of Qutub Akbar in the third over. Some good bowling from PSL opening pair of Jordon Moore and Matty Beckett saw them bowl 7 overs between them and concede only 23 runs. At the half way point Congs were 45 for 2 after losing the wicket of Slater, bowled by David Bland. Opener Keegan Moodley was the mainstay of the innings making a very classy 50 including 9 fours before he retired. As Congs tried to increase the run rate wickets fell at regular intervals. After 20 overs Congs finished on 109 for 6, this was probably 15 to 20 runs light of were we wanted to be and a disciplined bowling and fielding display was the key to success.
Things started well with Nathan Dalton striking in the third over removing James Conlon with a top class catch at mid wicket from Tom Huffinley. At the other end Jamie Allan picked up the wicket of Jordon Moore caught behind by Humpleby to finish a good spell of 4 overs 13 for 1. Callum Murgatroyd was also very economical in his 4 over spell picking up the wicket of James Doidge for 14 runs. After 13 overs the score stood at 53 for 4 and the required rate was now 8 an over. Ash Slater picked up a couple of wickets and PSL were on the back foot. David Bland did give a glimmer of hope to the home side with a quick fire 19 from 9 balls before he was bowled by Irjalaan Ahmed and any chance of a home team victory had gone. Moodley finished off the day bowling a very tidy 2 overs at the death going for just 4 runs.
Both teams have now lost one game against each other and when the two sides meet again later in the season the prospect of a title deciding clash is very much a reality.

Match report by Mark Gibson
As Congs come out to start their innings at 10.00 am, the temperature had already reached 23 degrees !!!!! Opening pair of Moodley and Slater managed to put on 52 for the first wicket before both fell in the 8th over. Qutub Akbar making his debut for the U15’s made 19 before he was caught by Sudano off the bowling of Lawrimen. Tom Huffinley 22 and Matt Humpleby 26 not out, made useful contributions with the bat to help the lads reach 142 for 5 in the blistering heat. After 5 overs the home side had made 25 for the loss of 2 wickets. As the temperature soared so did the runs per over Farley needed to win the match. Jamie Allan, Bal Lally, Tom Huffinley and Keegan Moodley all managed to pick up a wicket a piece to leave the home side on 98 after 20 overs. Despite the fact the lads recorded their forth win in 5 matches and ran out comfortable winners, it was a less then an impressive performance. Out of the 98 runs scored by Farsley, Congs bowled an incredible 20 wides in the game. With no game this Sunday the boys look forward to a week off to prepare for the visit of Undercliffe a week on Sunday and a second round cup tie against Woodlands at the Britannia ground on Monday the 7th June.
Congs 142 for 5 – K Moodley 18, A Slater 30, Q Akbar 19, T Huffinley 22, M Humpleby 26 no

Match report by Mark Gibson
Batting first and looking to build on last weeks good result, Keegan Moodley and Dale Spink got the lads off to a solid start with the pair putting on 59 before Spink fell in the 10th over making 18. Skipper Moodley continued his good run with the bat making 50 which included 8 fours before he retired. This brought together Nathan Dalton and Ash Slater. Dalton made 4 and was looking in control before he lost his wicket in the worst possible way after the Idle bowler deflected a powerful drive from Slater back on to the stumps leaving Dalton stranded. With the score on 95 for 2 after 16 overs Slater opened up and dispatched the ball to all parts with 49 been added in the last 4 overs. A fine display of power hitting saw Slater finish on 42 not out from just 26 balls. A quick fire 10 from Irjalaan Ahmed saw the home side finish on 144 for 4.
In reply Idle set about the run chase. Things did not start well with Idle losing a wicket in the first over. Mushy Shah made a rapid 27 from 16 balls before he played one big shot to many and fell to the pace bowling of Dalton. Sam Johnson (37) dug in and played with determination and intent to steady the ship. Wickets fell at regular intervals with good spells from Tom Huffinley 4 overs 10 for 1 and Moodley the spinner who bowled a tidy 3 overs for 6 runs picking up a wicket. Jamie Allan, Saif Shahidi, Irsalaan Ahmed, Dale Spink and Kamron Khan made contributions with the ball. With tidy work from Matt Humpleby behind the stumps, the home side secured their third win of the season. Credit must go to our opponents Idle, despite having a very young side they made their way to a very respectable 94 from 20 overs, well done lads.
Next week sees the team away at Farsley looking to build on a good start to the season.

Bolton Villas v Pudsey Congs
Sunday May 9th, 2010
Match report by Neil Humpleby
A cold overcast Sunday saw the lads turn out at Bolton Villas full of optimism. Captain Keegan Moodley won the toss and elected to bat on a slow batting track. Some short bowling by the villas’ attack saw the Congs’ openers race to 59 before Keegan fell to a smart catch on 42. Nathan Dalton came to the middle looking to add to the good start with Matty Humpleby at the other end. A change in bowling brought on slow right arm Akbani who had Matty stumped by some smart keeping from Leevey. With 2 new batsmen at the crease the run rate slowed due to the accurate spell of Akbani, who removed Saif Shahidi, caught & bowled for 7, to finish with figures of 2 for 13 off his 4 overs. The forced bowling change saw Nathan move in to top gear smashing 3 big sixes and 5 fours to finish on 49 not out. Ferguson(10) and Ahmed (9) adding the support saw the Congs innings finish on 141 for 4.
With a run chase of 7 per over it was always going to be a big ask for the Villas’ batsmen. A classy knock of 53 from opener Divesher before retiring gave the home side a glimmer of hope. The Congs’ bowlers stuck to their task with all returning excellent tight spells, assisted by some good work in the field, increased the pressure with Villas coming up 30 runs short of the Congs’ total. Finishing on 110 for 2 after 20 overs.
Congs 141 for 4 – Moodley 42, Dalton 49 Not Out
Bolton Villas 110 for 2 – Shahidi 3 overs 1 for 20, Dalton 3 overs 1 for 15

Match report by Mark Gibson
Cold winds and a dull morning were once again the order of the day as we prepared to take on PSL. With only nine players available for this fixture, Congs would have to work hard if they were to come away with anything from this game. Ashley Slater lost the toss and was asked to field. The bowling attack worked hard and had PSL at 35 for 3 after 8 overs. More tight bowling and good commitment in the field saw the lads restrict the away side to 100 for 6 from 20 overs, a great effort from the 9 lads. The main contributors were Dale Spink 2 for 13 and Ball Lally 2 for 14.
Unfortunately a less than impressive batting display saw the boys come up just short of the target finishing the innings on 92 for 7. Matt Humpleby lead the way with 24

Undercliffe v Pudsey Congs
Sunday April 25th, 2010
Match report by Mark Gibson
A damp and overcast morning greeted us as we arrived at Undercliffe CC to start our 2010 campaign. Football injuries and volcanic ash made the team selection a challenge this week. Undercliffe started well making 38 before losing the wicket of Adam Shabir (25) stumped Gibson, bowled Allan. Irjarlann Ahmed had Saraj Hussain caught by Jacques Allan taking a solid catch at mid on to leave the home side on 73 after 13 overs. Despite a under par fielding performance by the Congs, Undercliffe struggled to dominate with the bat. Dale Spink bowled a tidy 3 over spell having Keegan Moodley taking a tidy catch. In form Nathan Dalton continued his great start to the season with the ball, taking 2 wickets in the 20th over returning figures of four overs, 2 maidens, 2 wickets for 8 runs.
Chasing 97, the Congs set about the run chase. Opener Moodley fell in the second over falling to a smart caught and bowled by Qureshi. It was business as usual for Ash Slater who smashed 39 from 22 balls before top edging one to Overend at square leg. Contributions from Gibson (13), Spink (15) and Mark Ferguson (6 not out), pushed the Congs near the required total. But it was Nathan Dalton the batsman, who clinched the win for Congs, with a solid 18 not out, finishing the game with a massive 6 over the mid on rope.
Points in the bag and with room for improvement, leaves the boys very optimistic for the rest of the season.

Pudsey St Lawrence v Pudsey Congs

The last U17 fixture of the season was the local derby against rivals St. Lawrence away at Tofts Road. On a dry night the PSL skipper won the toss & elected to field first. Ramendeep & Keegan got us off to a steady start with an opening partnership of 29 before Ramendeep was caught in the deep. Raheel was next in, pushing the ball around for singles whilst Keegan played the attacking shots before he too was caught with the score on 40. A mix up between Ash & Raheel calling for a single saw Ash run out with only 12 added to the total. Joe came into the attack scoring 13 before edging one to the keeper off J.Doidge. Adam & Calum were the next victims as they tried to push the score along, both falling to good catches. With the score on 94 and only three overs left it looked like we were going to come up a few runs short. Matty had other ideas and after taking the strike off Raheel proceeded to plunder 18 runs off the bowling of A.Hopkins before holing out, caught by Hanley for 19. The innings finally closing on 122 off 20 overs leaving a total we felt we could defend.
K.Moodley 29, R.Ahmed 28 not out, M.Humpleby 19
The PSL openers set about the run chase with an opening stand of 48 before Nathan had Parratt caught behind for 22. The introduction of spin bowling to the attack saw Ramendeep take wickets and aided by a tight spell from Calum, push the required rate up to around 9 runs per over. After their spells were complete it was left to Tom , Adam & Josh to hold their nerve and bowl the last 4 overs between them. All three bowled exceptionally well in the circumstances and saw us come out winners by 6 runs.
R.Kang 4.0.11.4, R.Ahmed 4.1.10.0, C.Murgatroyd 4.0.19.0
This match saw the end of junior cricket for Raheel, Josh, Adam & Joe. I would like to personally thank them all for their efforts & support this season and wish them well for the future in senior league cricket.
Thanks as well to the rest of the boys who still are able to play U17 next season, I look forward to doing it all again next year.
East Bierley v Pudsey Congs
Wednesday July 7th, 2010
Courtesy of Neil Humpleby
Following the disappointment of Mondays Cup defeat, the Lads were back in action again away to East Bierley . A blustery overcast evening which threatened rain, saw the Congs win the toss and elect to bat first on a damp wicket. The opening bowlers of Bell & Ashford made good use of the conditions taking the wicket of Keegan with the score on nine. Ramendeep & Ash set about rebuilding the innings with a partnership of 35 before Ash was bowled for 20 by Cameron Bell. With only two runs added, Ramendeep was bowled by opening bowler Ashford for 19. Two further wickets fell with only 1 run added, leaving the innings dangerously close to a collapse. Matty joined Raheel in the middle and the pair added a valuable partnership of 43 when Raheel was caught in the deep looking for a maximum. Tom joined Matty & between them they nudged the score onto 105 for 6 after 20 overs.

The Bierley reply got off to a slow start with Whitehead sent back without scoring. The wicket of Craig Bell off Calums bowling was not to start a collapse and the innings gathered momentum. The Congs bowlers aided by some good work in the field saw us claw our way back into the game. Down to the last over with Bierley wanting only three runs from 6 deliveries. Raheel started with two dot balls before taking a wicket with his fourth delivery. J.Taylor came to the crease with only two balls left and took the chance of throwing his bat at his first ball, connecting & somehow beating the field to score the winning runs with only one ball to spare.

Cup Quarter Final

A trip to Albert Terrace to face last years league & cup winners for this quarter final of the BJCL cup was the reward for our victory over East Bierley in the last round. The team, weakened due to last minute withdrawls because of injury & illness, were asked to field first on a warm summer evening. The Woodlands openers set about posting a good score. After good spells from Josh & Raheel, the score had moved onto 28 for 0 after four overs. Change bowlers Calum & Ramendeep carried on the good work before Calum had Brother Jack caught in the deep for 21, the first wicket to fall on 41 after 7 overs. The Woodlands batsmen carried on the good start, keeping the scoreboard ticking over but the lads kept plugging away in the field finally, restricting the Woodlands innings to 124 for 7 after 20 overs.

R.Ahmed 4 overs 2 for 17, C.Murgatroyd 4 overs 1 for 10
Requiring a run rate of just over six, we felt we were in with a chance when Keegan & Ramendeep went to the middle. The Woodlands bowling attack had other ideas & built the pressure removing Ramendeep with the first ball of the innings. Keegan & Ashley set about rebuilding the innings before Keegan fell with the score on 41. By this point the rate had increased and once again we were facing an uphill struggle trying to chase down the target. Wickets continued to fall until after 19 overs, the Congs were bowled out for a total of 91.
Although we came up short by 33 runs, the lads should be proud of their efforts against an outstanding bowling attack. Finally a word of thanks to everybody who turned out to watch the game. We witnessed a great fielding performance from the Congs only to see it overshadowed by an even better bowling performance by Woodlands

This week saw the Congs entertain BOL at the Britannia ground. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat on another good looking track prepared by groundsman John Malpass. Good bowling from Josh & Raheel saw a wicket for Josh and the visitors on 21 for 1 after 6 overs. At the first change of bowling a wicket for Nathan in his first over and a run out reduced the BOL side to 51 for 3 after 10 overs, this had us thinking we could maintain the effort and restrict the batting side still further. Stubborn resistance from M.Nabi (50 retired) and Z. Iqbal (39 not out) saw this was not to be as the innings close on 149 for 6 after the 20 overs.
Josh Purser 4 overs 1 for 24, Irfan Amjad 4 overs 2 for 36, Nathan Dalton 2 overs 1 for 18.
With a run rate of 7.45 required, the Congs opening pair of Ramendeep & Irfan got us off to a great start with a partnership of 50 before Ramendeep was bowled for 17 by A.Aurangzeb. Unable to capitalise on the start and with the loss of Irfan for 36, the Congs innings faltered and as the run rate increased wickets fell at regular intervals. Only Joe & Calum getting to double figures before we ran out of overs and finished on 124 for 6, 26 runs short of the target.
Irfan Amjad 36, C. Murgatroyd 21, Ramendeep Kang 17, Joe Goodchild 14
Aurangzeb 4 overs 2 for 13, Z.Iqbal 4 overs 2 for 21
A disappointing result, we know we must improve for our visit to woodlands in the cup
Pudsey Congs v Thackley

This week saw us reach the halfway point in the season with the visit of Thackley to the Brittania Ground. A nice summer evening saw the game played over the full 20 overs per side.
The toss was won by the Congs Captain who elected to bat first. The early wicket of opener Ash Slater with the score on only 2 may have worried the team, but when Raheel joined Ramendeep at the crease, these worries were soon allayed. A steady methodical approach saw the total rise steadily to 102 before Ramendeep retired first on 53 not out from 56 balls. Raheel soon followed also retiring on 53 not out from 52 balls. Two new batsmen at the crease with not many overs left saw the Congs innings finish on a creditable 151 for 1 with Joe 11 not out & Matty 8 not out.
Ramendeep Kang 53 not out, Raheel Ahmed 53 not out.
A.Yasseen 4 overs – 1 for 41
The Thackley innings started in a similar fashion with Raheel taking the wicket of S.Rowe caught by Tom in his first over. Things went from bad to worse for Thackley in the second over when a class piece of fielding from Dale to run out C.Rowe saw the visitors on 0 for 2. Raheel & Josh carried on their excellent opening spells of pace bowling restricting Thackley to 18 for 2 off six overs. A change of bowlers saw Calum & Tom enter the action. Calum striking first with his second ball and Tom claiming a wicket in his second over had the visitors in trouble on 26 for 6 after 10 overs. The the other bowlers (Dale, Irjalaan, Jamie, Ramendeep & Joe) all held their own with two over spells from each of them. Wickets for Dale, Irjalaan & Joe saw the Thackley innings falter even further to finish on 75 for 9 off their allotted overs. A much improved performance in the field from the Congs lads must stand them in good stead for the rest of the season
J.Sugden 23, A.Yasseen 26
R.Ahmed 3 overs 1 maiden 1 for 6, C.Murgatroyd 3 overs 1 maiden 3 for 14, Josh Purser 3 overs 1 maiden 0 for 5
East Bierley v Pudsey Congs
Cup Second Round
Monday June 14th, 2010

A Chilly Monday evening at East Bierley was the venue for the Congs first cup game of the season. The home side won the toss & chose to bat first to take advantage of the light in this 20 over per side match. The Bierley openers got their side off to a good start putting on 60 runs for the first wicket due in the main to some average bowling & fielding by the weakened Congs side. A third change in the bowling brought debutant Irjulan Ahmed into action for his first spell at this level. At the end of his first over all be it expensive in terms of runs the score was 63 for 2. The introduction of Keegan from the other end also produced a wicket in his first over reducing the hosts to 67 for 3. After the addition of 1 run to the score, some sharp work in the field from Dale sent the Bierley no. 4 batsman back, , run out without scoring. A tidy knock from the no. 5 Ormondroyd steadied things down & saw the East Bierley total move onto 116 for 6 at the end of their allotted overs.
O.Ashford 31, K.Whitehead 24, T.Ormondroyd 32 NOT OUT
I.Ahmed 4 overs 3 for 23, K.Moodley 4 overs 2 for 15
Feeling we let the hosts score probably 20 more runs than we should, openers Ash & Keegan took to the field knowing just under 6 runs per over was the required rate. An opening partnership of accurate pace bowling from Bell & Ashford soon pushed the required rate up to nearer 8 per over and after the loss of Ash things were looking a bit bleak at 7 for 1. Raheel joined Keegan at the crease and with forced bowling changes they set about redressing the balance, Keegan going on to make an excellent 50 before retiring. Joe carried on the good work with Raheel , both getting into the twenties. At this point we were starting to breathe a bit easier but the fall of 3 quick wickets left us needing 7 runs from 6 balls. New batsmen Josh & Dale were in no mood to let the game slip away and with a wide & 5 scrambled singles off the last over the scores were tied, both teams finishing on 116 runs. As this was a cup game there had to be a winner and after consulting the rule book, Congs came away victorious due to losing less wickets in their innings.
C.Bell 4 overs 0 for 10, O.Ashford 4 overs 0 for 8, S.Burns 3 overs 3 for 21
Pudsey Congs v Undercliffe

A bright sunny evening for a change saw this game played over the full 20 overs per side. Captain Adam Patrick won the toss & elected to field. As the Undercliffe batsmen set about their task a wicket in Nathans first over gave the lads a great start against a very strong side. Two more wickets with the score on 29 gave more hope of restricting the undercliffe score. The Undercliffe skipper S. Hussain had other ideas reaching 53 before retiring, assisted by Rahman (23) pushing the final total onto 122 for 4 after 20 overs.
S.Hussain 53 n/o(retired), H.Ur Rahman 23
J.Purser 3 overs 1 for 13, N.Dalton 3overs 1 for 18
The Congs openers got off to a steady start before Ramendeep was bowled by Ahktar with the score on 39.Once again tight bowling from the opposition saw the required rate rise, and in trying to push things along, a steady fall of wickets saw the Congs finish their innings 40 runs short on 82 for 8.
R.Kang 13, A.Slater 21, J.Goodchild 10
B.Ahktar 4 overs 3 for 13, S.Hussain 2 overs 2 for 9, S.Khan 2 overs 1 for 2
Idle v Pudsey Congs

After a satisfying result the week before, the lads arrived at top of the league Idle for another match shortened to 16 overs due to poor light and the prospect of heavy rain. The Idle captain won the toss and elected to bat first to make the best of the conditions. The opening partnership of Misra & Topham making 65 runs off the first ten overs was helped by some average bowling & hesitancy from the Congs fielders, this put Idle in a good position with 6 overs to go. A change in the bowling attack saw Cal Murgatroyd brought into action for the first time this season due to injury. Cal struck in his first over ending Misras powerful innings on 42. A further 3 wickets in his next 2 overs plus wickets for Adam & Rahil saw the Idle innings finish on 107 for 6.
R.Misra 42, J.Topham 22
C.Murgatroyd 3 overs 4 for 15, R.Ahmed 4 overs 1 for 26, A.Patrick 4 overs 1 for 19.
The Congs reply got off to a steady start with Keegan & Ashley putting on 32 runs for the first wicket. After the departure of Ash, Rahil joined Keegan at the crease to add 26 runs for the second wicket partnership before a run out on 10 overs left us requiring 50 runs off 6 overs. Some hesitant running between wickets saw us fall victim to another two run out decisions to end any hope of us pulling off a victory. The fall of wickets continued leaving the lad stranded 34 runs short to close on 74 all out.
A.Slater 21, K.Moodley 19, R.Ahmed 13
A.Ali 4 overs 3 for 13
Next week sees Congs entertain high flying Undercliffe at the Britannia where an improved all round performance will be needed from everyone on the team.
Pudsey Congs v East Bierley

This week Congs entertained East Bierley at the Britannia Ground looking to bounce back from last weeks disappointing defeat. A dull & gray evening again reduced the game to 18 overs. Adam won the toss & elected to bat on a good track. An early wicket had the Congs pinned back to 8 for 1 after 3 overs. The rate increased with a 2nd wicket stand of 46 between Irfan & Joe. After Joe departed for 17, Rahil joined Irfan for another good partnership before Irfan retired on 50 not out. Next up was Adam who was in no mood to hang around and moved quickly to 37 with some crashing strokeplay before being bowled by Whitehead (the pick of the opposition bowlers). At the end of the innings the score had been pushed along nicely to finish on 156 for 6.
I.Amjad 50 n.o, A.Patrick 37, R.Ahmed 20, K.Whitehead 3 overs 3 for 23.
A much improved bowling & fielding performance reduced the visitors to 19 for 3 off the first 5 overs with 1 wicket for Nathan & 2 for Rahil. Bowling changes brought no respite for the visiting batsmen and a steady fall of wickets reduced them to a final total of 60 for 9 at the end of the allotted overs. All the bowlers delivered the goods but special mention to Bal whose excellent mid innings spell made sure the points were always ours.
A comfortable & well deserved victory after the disappointment of last week.
Well done lads.
B.Lally – 3 overs 3 for 6
R.Ahmed – 3 overs 2 for 10
J.Allen – 3 overs 2 for 9
N.Dalton – 2 overs 1 for 4
Bowling Old Lane v Pudsey Congs

After a weeks layoff the lads were back in action, away to Bowling Old Lane. In a match reduced to 18 overs, the home side elected to bat first. After early breakthroughs from Nathan & Rahil, the home side progressed steadily taking quick singles at every opportunity. Another two wickets for Rahil & Adam plus a run out saw Old Lane finish their innings on 106 for 7.
Rahil – 4 overs 3 for 13
Adam – 4 overs 2 for 14
A.Razzaq 20, Z.Iqbal 28
Congs started their reply in fading light & coupled with an excellent opening spell from Razaq & Nabi, found runs hard to come by. Good efforts with the bat from Ash, Rahil & Ramendeep helped pull us back into contention. Having to chase the game saw wickets fall at regular intervals leaving Congs 20 runs short of the required total.
A.Slater 23, R.Ahmed 16, R.Kang 14
A.Razzaq – 4 overs 2 for 9
M.Nabi – 4 overs 3 for 16
Thackley v Pudsey Congs

The under 17 team started their season with a visit to Thackley C.C on Wednesday evening.
A strong Pudsey Congs line up proved too powerful for a young Thackley side, the Congs winning by 139 runs. Captain Raheel Ahmed won the toss and elected to bat first, Ashley Slater (37) and Keegan Moodley (22) opening the innings. Raheel Ahmed added 41 not out before powerful contributions from Irfan Amjad (51 off 23 balls) and Ramandeep Kang (37 off 15 balls), blasted Congs to an impressive total of 207 for 2 in their 20 overs.
The Thackley reply started steadily at 34 for 0 after 8 overs before a rush of 4 wickets in 3 overs left Thackley on 38 for 4. Kang, Patrick and Huffinley the wicket takers. In fading light, Congs used no fewer than 9 bowlers to get through their overs, the home side finishing on 68 for 6. Stronger challenges will come along this season we know, but there are signs of real quality in this squad, which hopefully will make us contenders in both cup and league competitions this season.
