The 2XI signed off the 2008 season in style as they beat Baildon by 6 wickets to claim a very respectable 4th place in the final league standings. With all the wet weather recently the pitch was still a little damp so the decision to bowl first was a good one. Congs used 7 bowlers in all, trying to get everybody involved in the last game. Liam Stanhope led the way by taking his maiden 5 wicket haul in Bradford League Cricket finishing with 5 for 25 from 10.4 overs as Baildon were bowled out for 132. Callum Oliver finished with 3 for 32. The reply stumbled a little as Congs fell to 9 for 2 as Baildon found new ball success. But that was short lived as Richard Jubb (51) and Callum Oliver (51*) soon got hold of some very friendly bowling as the visitors used 10 bowlers in a game which certainly had an ‘end of season’ feel to it. Congs finished the game comfortable winners 135 for 4 to round off a very good season.

The 2XI recorded a season’s double over Hanging Heaton as they claimed a two wicket victory at Bennett Lane on Saturday. Congs won an important toss on a very slow soft wicket that proved hard to score on as they asked the home side to bat first. Congs took wickets at regular intervals as the bowlers performed well once again backed up by some very good catches which has been a highlight of our season. Josh Purser got rid of the dangerous Ellis (35) well caught at point by Simon Raistrick and Liam Stanhope was thankful that James Bragg held a good catch on the boundary as Lawrence (14) holed out. Liam finished with 3 wickets and there was a brace for Josh, Simon and skip Mike Oldfield. Hanging Heaton closed on 105. The Congs openers started confidently as Phil Allinson (11) and Richard Jubb (14) put on 30 for the first wicket. A mix up led to Phil being run out which was the start of a collaspe. 30 for 1 became 38 for 4 as, like Hanging Heaton, the Congs batters found runs hard to come by. Enter Imran Ahmed who has only had a handful of 2XI games. He took the fight to the bowlers and started to find the boundary regularly with some creative shots. As Immy fell for 39 it was left to Simon Raistrick to guide the Congs home finding the gaps initially and finishing the game with a straight six to secure the 15 points.

The 2XI recorded a well deserved victory as they beat Farsley by 25 runs at Red Lane.
Asked to bat first on a slightly green slow wicket, Congs got off to the best start possible as Warren Allitt (72) and Phil Allinson (40) stroked the ball to all parts putting on 101 for the 1st wicket. After the good start Congs expected to push on to mount a big score but it didn’t quite happen as the middle order struggled, only Paul Eachus (22) looked as though he was going to post a score. The tail end added a few runs to secure 4 batting points as Congs posted 205 for 9. A good start was required by Congs and Liam Stanhope delivered as he removed two of the top order in one over leaving Farsley 4 for 2. That became 44 for 4 as Josh Purser and Mike Oldfield picked up a wicket apiece. Congs then took the foot off the gas as Farsley put on 72 for the fifth wicket as they looked quite comfortable taking advantage of some loose bowling. Skip Mike Oldfield brought himself back for his remaining 7 overs and managed to pick up 4 wickets finishing with 5 for 33 as Congs increased the pressure once again to close out the victory. Even stubborn resistance from the Farsley tailenders and light rain in the final overs, couldn’t deny Congs a deserved 18 points. Farsley finished on 180-9

The 2XI got back on track on Saturday with a 5 wicket win at home to Woodlands, in some way making amends for the heavy defeat inflicted at Woodlands earlier in the season. Winning the toss on a helpful bowling pitch Callum Oliver ripped through the top 4 batters leaving the visitors 15 for 4. The bowlers were backed up throughout the innings by some great catches, James Bragg leading with way with 3 at gully. Woodlands had a mini revival but it didn’t last long as Josh picked up two in the middle order and Chris Doey chipped in with 1. Callum returned to inflict more damage adding another two to his tally making his figures 6 for 28 from 11, a great effort.! Liam grabbed the last wicket as Woodlands were bowled out for 92. Throughout the season Congs have liked to make games interesting and this was another example. We lost Phil Allinson early and along with some tight bowling we were finding scoring hard. Callum Oliver once again delivered with a very patient innings finishing with 32 not out. James Bragg knocked the ball around for 18 and skip Mike Oldfield was able to help Callum secure the win finishing with 17 not out as Congs won by 5 wickets.

Congs went into the Sunday game away at Baildon in a confident mood.
There were personnel changes due to unavailability but the mood in the camp was good. Mike came back in to captain and immediately lost the toss meaning we fielded first in hot conditions. Overall the bowling and fielding was quite good, there were some lapses in concentration which was understandable given the conditions. Simon Raistrick was the most successful bowler claiming 4 for 43 making sure we had the 5 bowling points. Earlier Mike had taken 3 for 48 and Josh bowled well with 2 for 25. Baildon finished on 187 all out. The reply was slow due to the lack of pace in the track and the Baildon bowlers performing well. After 20 overs the score was 34 – 2. As the middle order tried to increase the pace they perished as Congs finished on 150 all out with James Bragg unbeaten on 48. With 5 players at 18 years or younger we think we are heading in the right direction developing what we hope is the future of the club.

The 2XI endured mixed fortunes on what had to be the hottest weekend of the year. On Saturday we travelled to Spen Victoria under the leadership of Warren as Mike was unavailable. Winning the toss on a dead track the Congs amassed their biggest total of the year posting 286 – 2 with Calum leading the way scoring an unbeaten 110, his first ton for the club. Other contributions came from Warren (78) and Shane Blanchard (67) as the batters put the Spen bowling to the sword. Congs carried the good work into the field as they recorded their first 20 point win of the season bowling the home side out for 155 as Liam Stanhope took 3 for 39 and there was 2 wickets apiece for Josh Purser, Phil Allinson and Callum Oliver. Overall a great performance which consolidated our mid table position.

The 2XI endured a frustrating day at the Britannia as they went down by 5 wickets to second in the table Esholt. Batting first again the run rate was slow going as the pitch had been left uncovered therefore was open to the elements. Callum Oliver (40) and skip Mike Oldfield (28) were the main contributers in a total of 150 as the Esholt bowlers bowled with control. Although something to bowl at, the team thought they were once again a little short in the runs department. The Congs bowlers took control early in the 2nd innings as they reduced Esholt to 29 for 4. Thats when the frustration started as Congs couldn’t break the 5th wicket partnership of Dawson (87) and Hester (24). This partnership was worth 114 and although Hester went towards the end of play, the hitting of Dawson against some below par bowling gave the visitors victory.

The 2XI took 15 points from the game at Bowling Old Lane as they ran out winners by 50 runs. It was a strange game than swung both ways, both teams had their chance to claim victory. Congs lost the toss and were inserted on a slow wet track which was no surprise given the recent weather. A stand of 32 from Phil Allinson (19) and Warren Allitt (19) got us off to a good start but then the wheels came off a little as we were reduced to 69 for 8. Enter tailenders Liam Stanhope and Josh Purser who put on a stand of 45 for the 9th wicket to push us up to 114 before Liam fell. Both occupied the crease taking the runs when they came, batting very sensibly proving they can deliver with both bat and ball. The innings closed with Congs being bowled out for 116. Congs were hoping to create some early pressure with the ball but it didn’t happen as the Old Lane openers put on 41 for the first wicket with some interesting strokeplay. From then on in it was the Congs bowlers who dominated as Callum Oliver (4 for 4) and Josh Purser (2 for 13) applied pressure by bowling good areas and with that came wickets. They were supported well by the ground fielding and catching from the whole team as everyone contributed. The tail was mopped up by Simon Raistrick (3 for 4) as Congs ran out comfortable victors in the end. In saying this, the boys know that the performance as a whole needs to be raised for the remainder of the season starting with the visit of Esholt next week.

There’s just no stopping defending JCT 600 Bradford League Second Teams Division One champions East Bierley. They skittle out Pudsey Congs for 79 as they raced to an eight-wicket win which puts them 24 puts clear at the top.
Skipper Matthew Anderson took four for three as a youthful Congs side were brushed aside. Opener Steve Simpson continued his good form with an unbeaten 47 as they romped past the Congs’ score in 12.3 overs.

On Sunday, the Congs batted first on a wet pitch in the rain and started well as Shane Blanchard and Warren Allitt put 50 on the board in the first 8 overs. They both fell just before an hour long rain break and when we resumed lost quick wickets as the Mills bowlers used the conditions well. Congs finished on 95 all out. Congs had to once again turn to the young and inexperienced within the club as Congs were missing some senior players, one of them called up to the 1st team enroute to Manningham Mills which didn’t help preparation. The team made a good game of it as the bowlers kept things tight and applied pressure which resulted in wickets as Mills found themselves 30 odd for 4. It was only K Shaffiq who blasted 44 that just took the game away from Congs in an important middle spell. In the end Mills were 6 down chasing the 96 required for victory. Mike Oldfield and Liam Stanhope both claimed 3 wickets.

The 2XI suffered a double defeat at the weekend as they lost in the league on Saturday and went out of the shield on Sunday. Cleckheaton got the better of us on Saturday as they posted 259-7 on what looked like a damp track. The Congs bowlers didn’t find any line or length again as too many loose balls were bowled. Openers Jowitt (76) and M.Walmsley (103) put on 181 for the first wicket. Wickets did fall later in the innings as Simon Raistrick bowled his best spell of the year with 4 for 64 and Mike Oldfield with 3 for 76 but the impetus was with the visitors. Congs reply was fairly non existent as they made an effort to put some runs on the board quickly. Only two or three made double figures as they were bowled out for 69.

The 2XI battled through the hurricane winds at the Britannia to complete a 9 wicket win over Spen Victoria. Bowling first, the boys put in an under par performance with the ball, although the visitors never really put our bowling to the sword, it wasn’t to the standard we expect and neither was the fielding. The opening pair for Spen Vic put on 80 for the 1st wicket with Warriner (79) and Richardson (36) playing steady cricket. From then, wickets fell fairly regularly as skip Mike Oldfield took 4 for 32 and Liam Stanhope 2 for 35 as Spen Vic closed on 185 for 9.
The run chase was a comfortable one as first Phil Allinson and Warren Allitt (26) and then Phil and Richard Jubb found the gaps in the field hitting regular boundaries. Phil finished with 78 not out hitting 12 4’s and Richard 76 not out also with 12 4’s and a rare 6 as he dispatched a full toss from their spinner towards the clubhouse. All in all it was a good 17 points as the boys look forward to ANOTHER double weekend next week.

Lightcliffe were the visitors on Sunday to the Britannia as the Congs got back on the winning trail with a 5 wicket win. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat but Congs had learnt from the previous day and bowled with more control. Only a couple of the mid order batters troubled the bowlers as Congs took regular wickets and restricted them to 161 with skip Mike Oldfield taking 3 for 16 from 12. There were also 2 wickets apiece for Liam, Josh and Simon. A stand of 90 between Phil Allinson (56) and Warren Allitt (58) meant Congs got off to the best possible start. They both made their 50’s finding the boundary regularly enjoying the short bowling on a firm track. Congs lost another 4 wickets chasing the other 60 but the result was never really in doubt as one eye was kept on the weather with some games around the league lost to the weather. Congs gained 17 points from the win consolidating 6th place as they look forward to another double weekend.

The 2XI”s run of wins came to a halt on Saturday as they went down by 105 runs to Keighley. The first ball of the day went crashing to the boundary by the Keighley opening batsman which set the tone for the rest of the day as they amassed 277- 7 declared from 47 overs. The Congs bowlers didn’t bowl well feeding the batters both full and short balls on both sides of the wicket as Pudsey had to contend with a wet ball in inclement weather. Callum, Josh and Mike all shared 2 wickets apiece but the figures weren’t spectacular.
In reply it was the objective to bat the 50 odd overs and pick up some batting points even if we were to fall short of the target. Phil Allinson (40) and James Bragg (48) both applied themselves well knocking the ball around and Callum Oliver threatened with 24. But it was Keighley leg spinner Ash Robinson who was the Congs undoing as he picked up 8 for 36 in 13 overs. Congs finished with 173 falling just short of the 3rd batting point. A big thank you goes to 12 year old Dale Spink who helped us out and fielded very well whether it was in close or on the boundary, nothing intimidated him and he’s a player we will hear much more about in the future.

The 2XI had their best result of the season so far as they beat Hanging Heaton by 45 runs to pick up 19 points and move to 6th in the table. The team was under strength as Callum, Jubby and Andre were all on 1st team duty so asked to bat first it was up to the top six to deliver some runs and thats just what they did. Warren played well for 52 and once again Paul Eachus delivered with some powerful hitting ending on 53. They were well supported by the other guys and we picked up a valuable 4 batting points. We finished on 201 for 7.
Hanging Heaton started well with Howard Ellis playing his normal game and even with couple of wickets down they looked comfortable. But they continued to play their shots, somewhat loosely and the wickets kept tumbling as Liam Stanhope picked up 4 for 55 and Simon Raistrick 3 for 28. Congs held their catches and fielded well driven on by young Barney Gibson’s vocal cords and ran out deserved winners. As well as Barney, I’d like to thank Chris Murgatroyd for helping us out at the weekend. Hanging Heaton were bowled out for 156.

The 2XI secured 17 points as they beat Farsley by 3 wickets at the Britannia on Saturday. Winning the toss on a damp slow wicket the Congs took full advantage of good bowling conditions and reduced the visitors to 15 for 3 and eventually 83 for 7. All of the Farsley batters struggled to adapt to the pitch and good pressure by the bowlers. One or two managed to stick around to compile some runs but relied on edges and good fortune. As the Congs took the foot off the gas it allowed Farsley to make 161 all out. Even though we let them off the hook we just saw it as a chance to pick up a couple of batting points. Stanhope (3 for 52) and Oldfield (4 for 30) were the main wicket takers. Congs lost Phil Allinson early due to a side strain and like the Farsley batters struggled to get the runs flowing on the slow wicket. Richard Jubb applied himself well eventually falling for 36. But once again the main run scorer and eventual match winner was Paul Eachus who struck 60* to guide the boys home. Each was supported first by Jubb and then Skip Mike Oldfield (24) before Liam Stanhope helped Eachus finish the game.

The 2XI bounced back from their disappointment on Saturday to record another win at Pudsey St Lawrence on Bank Holiday Monday. The lads made a better effort of bowling first on a firm pitch as they bowled the home side out for 135 in 42 overs. It all started with James Bragg taking a great catch at gully off the bowling of Liam Stanhope who along with Josh Purser finished with 2 wickets. Lee Mortimer was the main run scorer with 59 as the home side seemed to want to play a shot a ball and helped their own demise somewhat. Skipper Mike Oldfield bagged 5 for 27 which takes his tally to 11 wickets in 2 games at P.S.L. this season. Although Congs lost 4 wickets chasing the total there was never too much doubt they would succeed in the run chase. It was only going to ever take one batter to get a score and again it fell to Callum Oliver (57*) who stroked the ball around well supported by Paul Eachus with a brisk 22*. Its important that this form is taken into another double weekend with the Shield on Sunday after the home game with Farsley.

The 2XI were embarrassed on Saturday as they fell to a 204 run defeat away to Woodlands. Losing the toss and bowling first on a good track, the bowlers found the going hard. All of the Woodlands batters contributed with Chris Brice (68) being the top scorer. Brice is normally found in the Woodlands 1st XI but was making his comeback from injury in this game. They closed their innings on 264 – 4. In reply the Congs made a slow start as spin bowlers Brice and ex Congs man Higgins opened the bowling. That was the theme of the innings as 4 of their 5 bowlers used were spinners.
Congs never got to grips with the pressure of chasing the big total and were bowled out for 60. Only skipper Mike Oldfield showed any resistance finishing 40*. Congs have the same win/loss ratio as Hanging Heaton who are in 5th position while we are 3rd bottom. The main difference is the batting points which affected us last year and is something we will need to work as a team to put right.

East Bierley took the honours as they visited the Britannia ground on Saturday to play the 2XI.
The weather played a big part as the game didn’t start until 4.05pm meaning a 27 over a-side game. Congs lost the toss as happened numerous times in these situations last year and were asked to bat first on a damp wicket that produced zip for the East Bierley bowlers. In trying to push the score along to set a target the wickets fell regularly with Phil Allinson (30) and Paul Eachus (22) being the main scorers. Chris Brook produced a good spell for Bierley with 3 for 22. Congs set a target of 121 for 8. A quick start was needed by Congs and they nearly got it as danger man Steve Simpson was given a early life line pulling the ball to square leg but the chance was put down. That set the tone as both Simpson and A.Brook both made 35 as Congs bowled too many 4 ball’s. East Bierley finished on 123 – 3 as Josh Purser took 2 late wickets. We now have to pick ourselves up as we head into a big bank holiday weekend with visits to Woodlands and Pudsey St Lawrence.

The 2XI continued their bank holiday form as they eased to a 8 wicket victory over Bowling Old Lane at the Britannia. Choosing to bat first, the visitors soon found themselves in trouble at 11 for 3 as once again Callum Oliver and Liam Stanhope produced a exellcent opening spell of bowling. They both finished the innings with 2 wickets apiece. Only H.Siddique (46) and H.Younis (39) put up any resistance as Simon Raistrick picked up 3 for 21 and Richard Jubb made a successful bowling debut spinning his way to 2 for 40. The bowlers were backed up by another good performance in the field as stand in skipper Warren Allitt took two good catches and Phil Allinson took a clean slip catch. Bowling Old Lane were bowled out for 187.
The Congs batters made short work of the run chase as firstly Allitt (55) and Jubb (54*) put on 66 for the 2nd wicket as Phil Allinson had fallen for 8. Then it was left to Jubb and Calum Oliver (57*) to score the remaining 91 as they both guided the ball around constantly finding the gaps. They continued the good work started by Allitt who was involved in running a 4 on the hottest cricket day of the year!!. The team now has to take this form into next week as unbeaten East Bierley visit the Britannia.

The 2XI bounced back after the disappointment of Saturday to record a convincing 113 run defeat of the “top roaders” in the 1st round of the Priestley Shield. Asked to bat first on a wicket that was a little damp!!!! openers Phil Allinson and Warren Allitt set the pace notching 50 off the 1st ten overs before Warren fell. Phil went on to post 39 and then handed the baton to Calum Oliver and Paul Eachus both just falling short of their half century, both playing some good cricket as Calum found the gaps and Paul found the garden across the road………twice! Andre Stolarski supported well in the middle order and the score went past 200 as Liam Stanhope and debutant Chris Doey ran some great 3’s at the end.
The Congs fielding at the start of the reply was keen and Calum and Liam set the tone as they produced a very tight first 10 overs bowling as a partnership, the pressure told as Calum came up with 3 wickets and finished with 3 for 4 from his spell. Josh Purser and Chris Doey both bowled tidy spells and are continually developing as bowlers at senior level. It was then left to skip Mike Oldfield to benefit from his sides good pressure as he collected 6 wickets backed up by some good catching from Eachus, Doey and Stolarski as the Congs progress to the second round!

The 2XI started the Bank Holiday weekend poorly with a 80 odd run defeat away to Esholt. The past two visits to Esholt have not been memorable for the boys and this was no different. Bowling first, the Congs took advantage of a slow wicket and bowled well restricting the scoring although Esholt kept wickets in the tent. At drinks the home side were only 60 odd for 1. After that the Esholt batters started to find scoring more easily although scoring boundaries was difficult for both sides with the length of the outfield. Esholt closed on 200 for 7 with Calum Oliver being the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets.
The run chase didn’t get off to a great start and before long Congs were being restricted by good bowling as well as losing wickets. Calum Oliver stuck around for a while trying to work the ball around and once again Paul Eachus showed the good form he is in scoring 41 making the final total of 113 somewhat more respectable. As a team we need to spend more time at the crease and apply ourselves to deal with any further run chase.

The 2XI had an eventful first game of the season as they travelled to last years Division 2 champions Cleckheaton. Winning what turned out to be quite an important toss, the Congs bowled first on a very slow and wet wicket. The wickets fell at regular intervals for Congs, all the bowlers looked dangerous when the ball was pitched up as there was no reward for short bowling. Skipper Mike Oldfield was most economical as he returned figures of 5 for 6 from 9.2 overs. There was also reward for 15 year old Josh Purser who swung the ball throughtout his spell finishing with 3 for 18 from 5 overs. New boys Calum Oliver and Michael Kelsey picked up one wicket apiece. Paul Eachus looked impressive behind the stumps taking a difficult catch and a good leg side stumping. C. Dobson was the main stay for the home side making 34 nearly carrying his bat through the innings.
Congs knew the run chase wouldn’t be easy seeing how the wicket had played and soon found themselves in trouble at 12 for 4 through the good work of the Cleckheaton bowlers. But a fifth wicket partnership of 30 between Michael Kelsey (22) and Paul Eachus (24) and a sixth of 37 between Eachus and Andre Stolarski (22) saw the Congs home by 4 wickets to claim the first win of the season. These two partnerships were key and hopefully show the strength in depth that the team has this season which will lead to more success.
