Congs second team this week travelled to Farsley. Congs skipper Callum Oliver, lost the toss and Farsley chose to bat first on what looked to be a good batting track. However, under a cloudy sky Congs looked in control with the ball. Openers Oliver and Josh Purser bowled tightly although neither took a wicket in their opening spell. Enter in Wasim Bashir and Liam Stanhope. Both bowled fifteen overs straight through, with Wasim taking 3 wickets for 39 runs, and Stanhope taking 4 for 46. Two successful and economical spells, backed up by some energetic fielding helped control the game for Congs. Purser and Oliver came back to close the innings, with Oliver taking one wicket and Josh claiming the last two wickets. Farsley finished with 163 all out, and after some great work in the field Congs were satisfied at tea.
Skipper Oliver promoted himself to open the innings with Keegan Moodley, and on a wearing track and an ever darkening sky, the Congs chase got underway. Farsley’s opening bowler Zafar Mahmood bowled an excellent opening spell, and he was able to remove Moodley for 14 with an excellent in-swinging delivery that cannoned into off stump. Enter into the game James Lindley Dawe. Oliver and James Lindley Dawe both showed application and patience is their innings’, something that the second team’s batting has often lacked this year. James’s usual aggressive stroke play was limited early on as Zafar Mahmood finished his spell, but once he was gone, the runs came swiftly, as he hit some lusty blows into the middle of Red Lane. The Farsley bowlers were put to the sword by James, and were worked around by Oliver as both past their half centuries knowing that there was still a great deal for them both to do. However, both batters remained at the crease to see Congs pass the Farsley total with just over ten overs to spare. Oliver finishing with 69 not out and Lindley Dawe with 66 not out. A brilliant match winning partnership, and an uncharacteristic innings from James, who showed just how devastating he can be to a bowling attack when he bats for a long period of time.
Overall an impressive bowling display followed by some patient and disciplined batting saw Congs collect 17 points in a well deserved win.

I was proud to watch our young team take on and defeat Morley. I say young because the oldest player was 23 (older by 3 years than anyone else) in an enthusiastic brilliant fielding display coupled with sound accurate fast bowling and calm quality batting on a dry dusty pitch that tested every aspect of cricketing skills. After Captain Callum Oliver struck early, Chris Doey also took 2 wickets and both returned at the close of the innings to complete a job well done. Wasim Bashir (14) bowled 15 consecutive overs in a calm probing fashion taking 2 for 31.On this type of pitch where the ball played tricks, Barney Gibson (14) behind the sticks, was impressive. Keegan Moodley and Ramandeep Kang (both16) also spun the ball to great effect. The fielding was top class, fine catches by Callum Murgatroyd, Danny Cockin, plus terrific ground fielding and powerful throws from James Lindley-Dawe, Doey, Kang, Sam Mason and others. Allround effort restricted Morley to125 all out after 47.2 overs. Kang and Moodley started confidently before being parted after scoring 36. JLD played in his aggressive mode taking the attack to Morley. Kang timed the ball so well and with Mugatroyd showing maturity beyond his years (14), it was left to the Captain of the day Callum Oliver to walk off the field a deservedly happy man. Well done to all 11 (plus Danny ,the scorer)

On the first and very hot Saturday afternoon we visited the league leaders Lightcliffe with yet again a depleted squad. With a vital toss to win, I called wrong and was asked to field first. The lads were less than amused!! but we started well with Chris Doey claiming the first wicket with a good catch in the gully by Majid Ali. Soon after Josh Purser grabbed the second by clean bowling the other Lightcliffe opener. Two bowling changes followed when Adam Patrick and Wasim Bashir came into the attack Adam’s first 7 overs going for only 13 and Wasim picking up 4 wickets for 65 in his 15 overs including a stunning catch by Majid Ali, which proved to be an important mid spell of bowling from the two young lads. The heat took its toll and Lightcliffe reached 214 for 6 in their 50 overs. Overall a good bowling performance well supported by the fielders, special notes for Danny Cockin and Joe Goodchild who put in some sterling work.
With 214 to chase the batting needed to click which it did after an opening stand of 125 between Keegan Moodley and Phil Allinson. This set the run chase up with less than 100 needed off 17 overs. Keegan went for a well made 37 and was replaced by Imran Ahmed. After a quick 40 run stand between Imran and Phil, the later went for 92. Gary Lewsley started well but fell to a good catch which left Imran and Majid Ali to finish the innings. Imran hit the winnings runs with his third 6 of the day. The batting was helped by some great support from the boundary with lots of whooping to celebrate every four and six.
A great win against the league leaders. This should be the spring board to more victories and moving up the table. Next weekend is another big one as Baildon visit the Britannia on Saturday and we go to our local rivals Pudsey St Lawrence on bank holiday Monday.

Woodlands were the visitors on Saturday and the Congs were looking for their first win of the year. On a cold day at the Brit we won the toss and chose to bat. The innings didn’t start well losing a wicket in the first over, but Keegan Moodley 32 and Imran Ahmed 40 put on 67 for the second wicket and were looking set. Woodlands brought on the experience of Phil Walker this slowed the runs and the pressure told on our batters and the next five wickets fell for 34 runs. Andre Stolarski 43 no and Liam Stanhope 13 pull things together but after Liam went the innings was soon wrapped up for 165 inside 50 overs.
The Woodlands reply was swift with some wayward bowling they soon racked up the runs with on opening partnership of 108 between Z Hussain and S Richardson. Although the bowlers slowed things down after Hussain went the damage was done and Woodlands reached their target with 20 overs to spare.
Lots of things to work on and improve for Saturday against Bradford & Bingley and the return of an old friend Warren Allit.

Looking for our first win, we visited Brighouse in the Priestley Shield on Sunday. We won the toss and on a really cold Sunday asked Brighouse to bat. We started well with Josh Purser trapping the Brighouse No. 2 LBW in the third over. Things were looking up but dropped catches cost us deer as Brighouse built their innings and at drinks Brighouse were 82 for 1. After a change of ends for Josh saw him with the wind behind him this helped him take 2 more wickets to finish with 3 for 37 in his 10 overs and with the experienced Phil Allinson 1 for 21 from his 10 at the other end stemmed the runs. Brighouse finished their innings at 161 for 6.
The batting didn’t start well and wickets fell too often, only Imran Ahmed 25 and a battling 66 from Steve Gunner saw us close in on the total. A swift 15 from Chris Doey helped and as the last pair of Josh Purser and Dale Spink came together with 26 needed, they started to take singles and inched us closer to the target. Unfortunately with one too many single ended the partnership and we finished 17 short.
Not a good weekend for the second team, bottom of the league and out of the cup. The next weeks will need a vast improvement both with the bat and in the field. We look forward to the visit of Woodlands to the Britannia on Saturday hoping that win will change our fortunes.

We visited BOL on an overcast Saturday with an under strength side due to first team call ups. The wicket was damp as it wasn’t covered over the previous two days of rain so the toss was important, this went BOL’s way and we were asked to bat. After a good start by the openers on a very tricky track, wickets soon started to fall. Only Gary Lewsley provided any real resistance with a hard earned 31. The BOL bowlers stuck to their task well and took wickets regularly and we were bowled out for 100, though it took 50 overs.
PCCC bowling started well with the first ball popping up in the air but falling short of Sam Mason at gully. Liam Stanhope soon made amends and had the BOL opener well caught by Ramendeep Kang. Unfortunately the BOL batters dug in and started to build the innings. We managed two more wickets from R Kang and Nathan Dalton with his first senior Bradford League wicket. Our bowlers never made it easy for the BOL batters and they took 34 overs to get to 101.
A good performance with the ball but much more work needed with the bat and in the field.

A sunny afternoon saw the visit of Morley to the Britannia. On a flat wicket the toss was important, Morley won it and decided to bat. After a good start with the ball for the Congs, Morley were 15 for 2 with a wicket to Liam Stanhope and a very good run out by Callum Oliver. Morley then dug in and dropped catches soon took its toll as the batting side started to put partnerships together; 55 for the third wicket and 102 for the fourth with J McNicol top scoring with an impressive 82. The introduction of Josh Purser and the spin of Ramendeep Kang, put a stop to the runs. Josh bowled an accurate first spell of 7 overs returning at the death, to help halt the runs. Josh Purser was 46 for 1 and Ramendeep finishing with 49 for 5.
The batting didn’t go well with the lads giving their wickets away cheaply. Only 40 from Callum Oliver, getting stuck in, with the top score of 40 and some sensible batting from our bowlers Liam, Josh and Chris Doey at the end saw us pick up two extra batting points.
Lots more work needed in all areas. We visit Bowling Old Lane on Saturday and Brighouse in the Shield on Sunday and two win this weekend is a must.

The Congs Second X1 started the new season away at Cleckheaton at Moorend. The wicket was green but firm and after the recent weather it was a credit to the Cleckheaton ground staff. After wining the toss I asked Cleckheaton to bat first. The bowling started well and Cleckheaton were contained with the first wicket falling to Callum Oliver. After the bowling changes, Chris Doey took two wickets and at drinks Cleckheaton were 83 for 3. The second half didn’t go the Congs way as Cleckheaton dug in and although Josh Purser and Ramendeep Kang each took a wicket, a ninth wicket stand of 55 saw Cleckheaton bowled out for 243 with the final wicket being a run out as Steve Gunner ran out the last man with lightening speed!! Callum Oliver finishing with a respectable 73 – 4. The Congs batting started with an early wicket of James Bragg but a second wicket stand of 94 between Phil Allinson (61) and Andre Stolarski (51) kept Congs well up with the run rate and at drinks we were 114 for 2. The introduction of the experienced Stuart Houlbrook pulled Cleckheaton back into the game as wickets fell and the Congs were pegged back despite cameos from the evergreen Gary Lewsley (17), Steve Gunner (12) and the young bowlers Liam Stanhope (17) and Chris Doey (10) as Congs fell short of the total by 32 finishing on 211 all out. Over all a good start but some room for improvement, as we now look forward to the visit of Morley on April 24th
